2014-2015 New York Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you're using FAP to waive the secondary fee are you able to actually submit the secondary right away? Or do you have to wait for them to process your email notifying them that you're using that as your payment? I'm not seeing an option to submit on the payment page, but I already emailed them

I emailed them after filling in all the information, per their directions. I haven't heard anything back besides an automated email saying they will review my email within 2-3 business days. When I went back to the secondary website today there still was no submit button or anything. Is this what happened to you?

Submitted NYMC secondary! Did not receive an automated email for the submission or the payment, though...

Same thing here... Also they should change the typo on the confirmation page after you pay. The blue link says "madicine".

Yeah, that's what's happening to me. I emailed them today and got the automated email. Hopefully in a couple of days they will process it and there will be a way to submit. I'll post here if anything changes

Hopefully someone here will know -- I have only taken one semester of physics, and plan to take the second semester in the spring. Would this be okay? It says that the pre-reqs have to be "in progress".. Does that mean I have to be currently enrolled, or can it be that I absolutely plan on finishing the sequence?

me neither 🙁 been verified about 4 weeks now

I believe there was a section on the AMCAS where you could put in Future Coursework. I think if its on there it should be okay... I don't quite remember how that worked though because my brain evidently marked filling out the primary as "Traumatic" and promptly blacked it out. You should give them a call if you're really nervous about it. I'm sure its fine.

I actually realized that I don't meet the LOR requirements for NYMC 🙁 I'm not going to submit the secondary. Good luck all!

It's kinda confusing...

  • If your college has a Premedical Advisory Committee, a single letter of evaluation from the Committee is preferred and will fulfill all undergraduate letters of evaluation requirements. A Committee letter does not require the names of individual letter writers.
  • If your college does not have a premedical committee, a total of three (3) letters of evaluation from undergraduate faculty are required. The names of the individual letters writers must be listed on your AMCAS application. Two (2) letters must be from science faculty who either taught you in a class or supervised independent research for which you received credit toward your science GPA. Acceptable science courses for purposes of letters of evaluation include: biology, chemistry, physics, bio-medical engineering, or bio-engineering, etc. (Math is not considered a science course for purposes of letters of evaluation.) The third required letter of evaluation must be from a non-science course.
  • One (1) of your three letters of evaluation must be from the department in which you majored as identified on your AMCAS application - whether science or non-science.

Didn't know you HAD to have an LoR from someone from your major...
Looks like I might not be able to complete the secondary either =/

Probably a silly question...but would a LoR from your "minor" or 2nd concentration be disqualified as well?

I would strongly encourage you to call the admissions and talk to them about it. I'm missing a non-science faculty LOR and they said all I had to do was send an email formally stating that I would like to process the app without the LOR. I don't know how much it will hurt the application but I was in the same boat last year and they extended me an II(currently waitlisted and reapplying).

Good idea.

Just called, and this is what the lady said:

The LoR from your major is a pretty strict policy. Especially if you are still in college/are a recent graduate, she said they send your application back to you if you don't have the LoR from your major, because that is one of the most important LoRs for them to review.

Oh well, good to know, and saved me $120. Good luck y'all!

Oh wait. I think I misinterpreted this. Both of my letters are from faculty within my major (Chemistry) -- would that be okay?

I feel like as long as you have 1 science letter you should be fine right? Especially if your major is a science.

Do you guys know what to do about letter packets?
If I have a letter packet from my school, should I still enter them individually?

I just received the secondary (ready for review 6/27, waiting on verification). I graduated in June 2012 and I have one biology LOR and one major LOR (non-science), but I don't have the two required science LORs. I worked in a research lab (not for credit or transcript notation) after graduation so I have a letter of recommendation from my PI. Do you think I'll be able substitute one of the required science LORs for a PI letter?

I know it says "If you graduated prior to 2012 (this does not include 2012), and are unable to obtain letters of evaluation from your undergraduate or graduate school, we will accept other academically oriented letters. However, keep in mind that providing us with the requested letters will strengthen your application." I graduated in 2012 so this doesn't apply to my situation.

It's > 5pm but I'm thinking I'll call the admissions office and ask anyways. I would love to apply to this school if possible.

Why does the secondary with the least required info cost me the most? Maybe the answer will come to me in the shower tomorrow......

Quick question: How do I input course name/number and credit hours if I've taken more than one class with one of my letter writers. I took 5 courses, amounting to 17 credit hours with my non-science LOR.

I would just pick one.

Got secondary. For some reason, when I try paying by credit card, it won't let me input my street address fully.

Yeah, that happened to me too. It went through, though.

Did anyone else notice that when you submitted the secondary, it said "Please visit us at School of Madicine Admissions Home Page to check on your application status." I think I'm delirious from writing too many essays...cause this gave me the giggles 🤣

I just got my secondary and was disconcerted to see the graduate letter requirement. Since I'm working full-time nights along with grad school I haven't had time to do research or really get to know any professors enough to ask for an LoR, and I got a committee letter from my undergrad school because I'd worked with them before and the committee at my grad school didn't seem very professional.
What I'm wondering is: does that pretty much preclude me from candidacy, or should I submit anyway? Should I just call admissions and ask about it? The secondary fee is very steep, so I don't want to keep throwing good money after bad here.

@Mayday_ @prdv have you guys heard anything? I am beginning to think they forgot about us 🙁

My application is not verified but I received a secondary today... What should I make of this? I filled it out and sent it right away but I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing...

I haven't heard anything yet. I'm going to give it until Friday before I start to worry because they mentioned giving them 2-3 days to process their emails

I received one before I was verified too. A few schools will send out secondaries when they receive your information from AMCAS

Actually I do have an update. I was verified today and I just tried to log in to the secondary but it wouldn't let me. I got this notification instead:

"You have already completed the Medical School Admission's Secondary Application on Wednesday July 9, 2014
Click on the Continue button to return to the School Medicine Admissions Home Page."

I'm guessing that when I was verified my FAP approval went through. It looks like it just submitted my otherwise complete application automatically

Hmm, I was verified in June. I just went to log in and it didn't do anything except refresh the screen when I hit continue. No notification.

Hmm, I just opened the secondary from their website and now it's just refreshing. But when I open the secondary using the direct link they sent in their secondary invitation email I get the notification stating I submitted it today. Maybe try opening it through that link. Let me know what it says!

Same thing happened to me... NYMC doesn't screen so I wouldn't really think about it too much. Just revel in the fact that you got the secondary so fast when there are still people waiting. Pretty sure they just send it out in random batches through a computer system.

So weird! I went through the link in the email and got the notification you got. I clicked continue to go to their admissions home page and then went to the secondary application tab. I clicked the check status link and logged on that way which took me to my status page where everything was listed as being complete and submitted. So that is good news! But what a round about way of getting there haha.

Does it say it was submitted 7/9 as well? When I check my status it still says the original "email was sent with secondary invitation" under secondary status, but it won't let me log into the secondary anymore. I guess I'll just have to be patient

Wait so if we have FAP, it automatically submits our secondary? :eyebrow:

Thanks for the updates guys!!

I think maybe once you email them? I really don't know. It just appears that it submitted it automatically. Unless there is just some error right now not letting me log in.. Who knows

So if I am starting a Master's program this fall, and they require a letter from someone in the program, does this mean I will not be "complete" in NYMC's eyes until after the first semester?

For me, I had to email them regarding my FAP. I Emailed them on 7/8 when i finished my application. on 7/9 my FAP was approved ("07/09/2014 - Your application fee payment or AMCAS fee waiver approval was received.") and my status page says "07/09/2014 - Your Secondary Application was completed by the Office of Admissions and is currently under review by the Committee for Admissions."

From this, I'm guess once you email them with the specific email title they specifically tell you to put, then they will take care of it for you without emailing you back.
