2014-2015 Northwestern University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wanna post some of those questions? was hoping we wouldn't get this one for another week or so...

They're the same as last year:
Each essay is limited to 250 words

Essay 1: Given the distinctive educational philosophy and curriculum at FSM, describe how your personal characteristics and learning style would fit the institution.

Essay 2: Describe the coping skills (not problem solving skills) you use when confronted with difficult situations

Essay 3: Describe your career plans and goals. Be as specific as your current thinking will allow.

Essay 4: (if applicable): If you have (or expect to have) a year or more between college graduation and Medical school matriculation, describe your activities and/or plans.

Essay 5 (on the diversity page): If you wish, use this space to provide more detail about your selections [note: this is about your racial background, sexual identity, and social background] above and how you would bring diversity to the Northwestern community.

So, northwestern sends em out to everyone right? Probably just in batches? And is the consensus like last year about question 5 that it is only talkin about those 3 selections?

Was not expecting this secondary so early! Now I actually have to get off my butt and write these essays haha

+6

They don't screen so sit tight.
Thanks guys.

I'm actually hoping it comes Friday and not tomorrow because I'll be out of the house all day tomorrow. Haha. Beggars can't be choosers though...

I bet they haven't even sent out the secondary yet 😉

+ 14 I'm with Milkman - have they really sent it out? 😵

Yeah.. I'm a little skeptical as well..

Their website says "You should now check your email frequently (around August 1st) for an invitation to complete and submit the Feinberg supplemental application."

I got the secondary last night. So they definitely have at least sent out some! Maybe it's just happening in batches.

Ok, so it begins. As if I needed another reason to check my email frequently 😛

yeah I would have been okay with them waiting a few more weeks. I was finally feeling like i wasn't drowning in essays..

I'm really struggling with the "coping" essay; are people just listing things for the whole essay or narrowing in on a specific experience?

I personally narrowed in on a specific experience and discussed how what I learned can be applied to medical school.

Submitted! Wow, the light at the end of the Tunnel of Endless Secondaries is actually visible! 😀

and the worst applicant award goes to jocoh! Congratulations to me for not adding Northwestern to AMCAS (one of the schools where I have the smallest chance of getting in) until today ...even though I was verified in June!

Seriously...what was I thinking? Oh well, added today so we'll see what happens, still not caught up on secondaries but hoping one from here comes my way!

Pretty sure you can add schools whenever.

haha yeah you definitely can. I just added northwestern and paid the $36 to AMCAS but that puts me at the bottom of the pile if they are sending secondaries out in batches!
just couldn't believe it took me over a month to figure it out

Is anyone having any problems logging in to the secondary? I am entering my AAMC ID and Last name, but when I hit "login" the same page I was on just reloads and the ID/name fields are blank again.

Yeah, mine is doing the same thing

Does northwestern only allow 3 letters? Does anyone know this? That's what MSAR says but their website makes it a bit more unclear, as if they'll accept at least 3 letters? I emailed to ask, but I don't think they'll reply at the earliest for at least a few days.

I figured it out- once you login for the first time successfully (which I assume you already did), you have to exclusively use the second login screen to login in the future, which asks for both your first and last name, and ID. Does that make any sense?

Yes, they only allow 3 letters and will ONLY accept more if you are offered an interview. When you get the secondary they make it pretty clear 🙂

-- Thanks! But do you know by any chance that if I sent a packet containing 4 letters they'll reject the whole thing? I got the secondary today actually and it doesn't say anything about this.

It doesn't say anything about the letters? I read on the secondary that they will read the first 3 letters they get.
