2014-2015 Rutgers University - Robert Wood Johnson Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for the helpful info, @gshocke! That's awesome that you currently live so nearby the med school already, it seems like a nice area. I have read about the Chancellor’s Scholarship, it does seem amazing..especially with the opportunity to do the year of advanced study. I was just asking the question about scholarships mainly if anyone happened to know about any other possible opportunities that might exist to help a bit with the cost of attendance for incoming students, I know some schools have potential things for selected OOS people, etc. Understandably, they might not exist for all I know. Would love to go to the RWJMS nonetheless!

no problem! and yes ive lived here my whole life and was born at RWJ hospital so its surreal that I'll be attending school there now.
youre OOS? hmm by the looks of it ... i highly doubt rwj would have OOS scholarships, the rutgers schools have a veryyyyyy very high instate preference for acceptance, let alone scholarship. last year, only 3 OOS students matriculated and 2 being MD/PHD. but i know that they are trying to enroll more OOS students this year, so that might change in terms of scholarships also.. who knows.

Anyone in a dilemma between attending this school or NJMS in Newark? What are your opinions?

Did they finish calling people?

I called the office earlier yesterday just to ask. I think I spoke with Liesel. She mentioned that decisions will be by either phone call and email (for acceptances) or mail (for non-accepts and wait lists). She also mentioned that decisions should be received by the end of the month.

I thought there would be more calls around the 15th. But it doesn't seem like anyone from SDN got a call yesterday. Fingers crossed for everyone still waiting!

Did anyone else get an email asking for updates on their gap year?

So from what I understand based on the lack of replies compared to posts from Dec 4th.....nobody has been called yet for the second round of acceptances?

Haven't received my letter yet in the mail? Has anyone else?

Congrats to everyone with acceptances here so far!! I have an interview coming up at RWJMS and have a few questions that maybe some of you guys might have answers to:

1) Does RWJMS do any student hosting for interviewees? I didn’t see anything about that and was wondering if I should start looking for a hotel and possible means of transportation.

2) Does anyone from the area know what the average price range of a mediocre 1 bedroom apartment in areas that students might choose/want to live?

3) Does anyone happen to know more details about the potential merit and/or need-based scholarship opportunities at RWJMS such as how/when they are awarded?

Thanks!

1) Sorry for just seeing this now, but I think we can help answer your questions! We do offer a student host program (which just started a month or two ago). All applicants will be contacted prior to their interviews, and we will match you with a student. You can also email [email protected] for more information.

2) For a one bedroom, you could probably find something for $500-600 in the "undergraduate" section of New Brunswick or Highland Park. Most students choose to live in Piscataway (Society Hill for most), Somerset, New Brunswick, and Highland Park.

3) A few full ride merit scholarships are awarded and will be offered in the Spring. Many other scholarship opportunities arise throughout the years after you are enrolled. Some of these are based off a combination of merit, need, or your accomplishments while in medical school.

If you have any more questions, feel free to email [email protected] (our student admissions group--NOT connected to the admissions committee or their decisions).

@sarsrwj does anyone know if the ipad we get is included in our tuition? or if we have to pay for it separately? and if we do have to pay for it separately, can we opt out and use an ipad we already have?

The iPads are included in tuition and you cannot opt out. You'll need to use the one they give you because they come preloaded with all the apps you need (including those for our exams) as well as certain safety features (for HIPAA and what not). Just FYI, there are several people who almost exclusively use their personal laptops to study and only use iPads for exams.

Have all calls been made? My mailbox is at school so I hope I don't find a bad surprise in there when I return. Could I call them and ask since I don't have access to the letter if it exists?

I doubt they finished all their decisions if that's what you mean. Does anyone know if they do silent rejections btw?

if youre accepted they call, and if they dont reach you, leave a voicemail. within the next week, they send about 3 or 4 emails in regards to reserving your seat, winter reception, financial aid, scholarships, in addition to sending an official letter to your residence, so they make every effort to reach you.

When did you interview? (or around when) just curious bc I interviewed the 2nd week of December and was not so worried but am thinking maybe I should be?!

I interviewed the first day and still nothing 🙁, I hope this doesn't bode bad news.

Sorry to hear. Did they send an email? Or snailmail?

Neither, I called the admissions office asking when the next round of decisions were coming out. She nicely offered to check for me.

She did say a round of letters was going out this week. So my best guess is mail of the snail variety.

Followed Dajaleymon Kiwi's advice and called the admissions office. As expected, waitlisted on "competitive hold". Anyone know if "competitive hold" is better or worse than being put on the alternate list?

There has only been one major wave of acceptances. I hope more are coming later, but it seems to be pretty silent so far...

I called and was also told that I was on Competitive Hold. The woman told me that it's higher priority than being on the wait-list. I'm not sure what the alternate list is. She said it may not be until April that we hear anything 🙁

Does anyone happen to know if RWJMS is receptive to post interview invite updates?

Does anyone have an idea when we will get more information about orientation and the calendar for next year? I can't wait!
My guess is that we'll learn more about it at the reception this month. I'm so excited that I can't wait to hear more stuff as well haha

Post interview INVITE updates? You should just hand them in during your interview.

I think they are receptive to updates in general though.

Any idea on what the waitlist situation is here? Do many people make it off?

Also anyone know if more straight acceptances are going to go out?

I was going to ask the same Q; i checked last years RWJMS thread and... it fell off a cliff in May with no users saying they got in off the wait list (though this might be an aberration with SDN being a small % of the applying population, anything for false hope amirite?)

I received an "II" awhile ago but they said they were backed up with scheduling and would get back to me, just wanted to let those still hoping for an II know that I got the scheduling email today and the dates that were available were 2/9, 2/27, and 3/6

Wanted to let you guys know I was rejected. I called in to check status this past Friday and was told. The admissions lady I spoke with said they were sending out letters that day or very soon

Sorry to hear this, best of luck in your other applications. Would you mind telling me if this was pre or post interview?

Thanks, I have an acceptance elsewhere so it doesn't sting so much. This was post interview and I interviewed mid November

I got the II in December too saying they were booked. I didn't get the updated email yet, you guys think I should call the office or give it a day?

Hmm... your choice i got the first email on 12/4 but waiting one day couldn't hurt!

out of curiosity when were you complete?

Hey everyone,

I submitted my application a while ago and haven't heard back in a long time (I'm a Canadian). I've been offered 2 interviews elsewhere but I still want to interview at as many places possible. I'd love to be interviewed here but I'm losing hope. Should I send a letter of interest?
