2014-2015 The Commonwealth Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just was rejected via snail mail. Nice school, but it wasn't for me anyways. Good luck all

For a while there I thought I wasn't going to get any allopathic love.

I didn't get the impression tcmc was a stats focused school. It was more of a "do you fit our mission" type.

I've been thinking a lot about that, especially because my pre-med advisor told me that once you interview at a school it means your stats are "good enough" and it's really all about the interview. But you'd have to think that even if they really like you and that you fit in, and there's someone else that fits equally well, they'd go with the one with the better stats. Right?

Two things I'd like to share according to ADCOM members on here and experienced people I know personally...

1. Apparently there's never really a time where two applicants will be compared up against each other for one to get "chosen". They look at just your file and decide on just your file, for better or for worse.

2. The whole "once you get an interview, the interview is all that matters" is completely untrue. Depending on the school, an interview performance might only be a small factor for admissions decisions. The committee will look at everything you have when making a decision. You could have a perfect interview and still get waitlisted if members have a problem with your stats, ECs, etc.

Hope that helps a bit.

During my interview at TCMC, the faculty interviewer specifically stated that the interview was only one component of the application. He stated that I would neither be accepted nor rejected due to the interview alone. He said it was only one component of the application.

Absolutely! This was the reason I got rejected at one school last year. One of the schools that I interviewed at offered exit interviews and the dean went through my application and basically said that my interview went well, but my stats weren't good enough. It would seems like if you get an interview, then academics shouldn't play that much of a role after the interview. But, as you said, if someone else interviews well and has better stats, they're always going to get the spot over you.

I would be soooo pissed if I flew across the country just to hear that my interview went well but my stats are going to hold me back. Why invite me for an interview then if you have so many other qualified applicants???

Are there any other October and maybe September interview folks still waiting on decisions?

Rejected post interview via snail mail today. Good luck to you guys!

For those of you recently accepted/rejected, when did you interview?

+1 this is so true and thats whats concerning me now

+2, especially at new schools. I feel like since they want to establish themselves, they are more loathe to accept lower scores that can bring down their reported averages.

I know a few people who were deferred last cycle. At the of all the interviews were told if they were going to be accepted, rejected or put on a wait-list. That being said from what I know those who are deferred are looked at every month and reevaluated when they have their meetings.

First and only rejection that hasn't stung or phased me 😀

Has anyone been rejected pre-interview here that actually filled out a secondary?

So I was deferred a little while back. do you guys think it would be way too blunt to send a letter directly to the dean or director of admissions? should i maybe just send it to the general admissions email, or perhaps not send one at all? any insight?

From what I remember at my interview, they said that they are alright with letters as long as they include a significant update.

Pre-Interview rejection just now. Good luck to the rest of you still waiting on both pre- and post- interview news!

Pre II rejection just now as well. Good luck to everyone else!

I wonder if we are going to hear anything back tomorrow, or just wait for another month...

Pre-interview rejection this morning. Complete around mid-July. Oh, well. lol

I got rejected a while ago, but if anyone's curious this was my letter. Did everyone receive the same letter?

"Dear BurntFlower,

One of the most difficult responsibilities of my position, if not the most difficult, is informing applicants when they have not been granted an interview for admission to the medical college. Selecting applicants from a qualified pool can be a challenging task.

While receiving this letter is disappointing, we encourage you to pursue your goals in medicine. We invite you to look at our Masters of Biomedical Science (MBS) degree which is a one-year program that may strengthen your academic credentials for re-applying to medical school. We are willing to waive the application fee for candidates who would like to redirect their medical school application to our MBS program. The MBS application process will open in January for fall 2015 entry. Information about this program can be found on our website.

Although completion of the MBS program does not guarantee acceptance into the MD program, our MBS graduates have a high rate of acceptance into professional programs.

Aside from completing the online MBS application in its entirety no additional materials or fees will be required. The MBS admissions process is separate from the MD admissions process and your application will be reviewed by a separate admissions committee.

Sincerely,

Linda Berardi-Demo, EdD
Associate Dean

The opening paragraph has got to be the nicest rejection one I've read this cycle

That really is one of the nicest pre-interview rejection letters I've seen. I've had a few myself. I interviewed here a couple of weeks ago and the admissions staff were all incredibly kind and helpful.

This waiting is truly the hardest part of the process (not what I thought I would be saying when I was cranking out secondaries as fast as possible). Good luck to everyone wherever they are in the process and congratulations to those with acceptances!
