2014-2015 University of California - San Francisco Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rejected post-secondary. My activities and goals likely did not match very well with UCSF; I still got II from other schools more aligned to my interests. Will still root for the SF Giants in the World Series next week despite this, however. 2010 champs, 2012 champs, 2014? Even years=playoff victories
Sorry to heat this.

When did you receive the email? When did you complete your secondary? if you dont mind me asking.

Go Giants!!!!

UCSF MD rejection last Friday...

BUT in the same email was a Joint Medical Program interview invite! My 1st choice program, so I'm ecstatic, though a little sad about the other door closing. LizzyM ~70, complete 8/13

This is possible?

Oh wait, looking at the JMP website, it seems like they have two different admissions committees……I love the JMP track but I feel like they won't love me back </3

Post secondary rejection just now. Heart is broken to bits. Complete 8/6 Lizzy M 76-78.

Rejected today as well. Complete end of July.. Bummer.

I was complete on 8/06 too. My stats are lower, but I still haven't heard anything back :/

Has anyone that completed their secondary around early to mid September heard anything yet? I'm starting to dread checking my email.....

I've been complete since late July and still haven't heard anything ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But on a more useful note, I quoted a post from gyngyn awhile back which makes me feel better. I suppose being slotted into the third category is much better than instantly getting tossed out.

Candidates fall into three general categories:
1. Interview now
2. Reject now (except for "silent rejection" schools)
3. Stratify and re-assess at intervals. This is the largest category in size. Most of these will never be interviewed but until a sufficient number of acceptances have been offered, interviews may be forthcoming as the season progresses.

Secondary today!!! ....Completed primary exactly one month ago because that was my birthday.......

Just out of curiosity, how was your secondary email invite worded?
Mine was pretty stiff/neutral: "We would like to learn more about you. Please log in to the status page and complete our secondary application..." Didn't feel too much love :/

I liked it. It made me feel like I was being inducted into some weird cult

Also got a rejection yesterday. IS, 3.9 gpa and 38 MCAT. This was my only option of staying near home, and although it was always a long shot, I dared to dream it would be a possibility. 🙁 C'est la vie... I'm gonna say things happen for a reason. At least I still have a shot at other great schools.

Sorry to those receiving rejections. I hope it works out elsewhere.

So I got a secondary out of the blue on Monday. I was totally shocked because I am OOS and my LizzyM is 73 (33 MCAT). I added SF before my MCAT scores because I thought I would have done better and wouldn't have added it knowing my score now. I am just surprised because many people here with better stats than me got rejected. However, I am nontraditional and have a rare MA degree and a heavy social science emphasis to my application and medicine. What does anyone think? Do you think I have a shot at a II? I turned the secondary around within 14 hours.

So sorry to hear about these rejections.... this process is unfathomable. 🙁 MDapps is filled with uber-successful applicants who got pre and post secondary rejections from UCSF. If it's any consolation, Stanford is still a possibility!

LOL it seems like UCSF is rejecting its highest stats applicants first.. Strange. ALSO, most people getting rejected this wave have multiple IIs to incredible schools... it really makes no sense whatsoever. What does UCSF look for in its applicants?! Anyone have any insights?

I'm an alumna from UCSF and sat on their admissions committee so I think I might be able to help give a little insight. I am very sorry to hear about these rejections. UCSF is weird in that perfect numbers just aren't enough to get you into the school. They literally want to hear that you've been to Africa helping Ebola patients, or some similar experience. From what I saw, their goal is to put out doctors who have potential to win the Nobel prize... not necessarily that have perfect numbers. So just following the "normal" rules to get into med school just isn't enough. I know this isn't the most wonderful information but I hope it helps put things in perspective. I wish everyone the very best of luck and of course to not let this rejection get you down. I was put into waitlist purgatory at my first choice, UCLA, but unexpectedly got into UCSF where I had previously convinced myself I had no chance. Think of it as a sign! (And no I don't see myself winning the Nobel prize anytime soon)

I am sorry to say that tonight I joined many of my perfectly qualified fellow applicants in the post-secondary reject pile tonight. Here, I had myself convinced that I had a chance, as I seemed to miss several waves of post-secondary rejections.

I am now in bed with my dogs consoling myself with a nice glass of California Cabernet Sauvignon. 🙁

Rejected this evening. Very disappointed.

I'll see you, and your department of neurosurgery, in 4-5 years, UCSF.

I empathize. For me, California Malbec with dinner, and scotch for dessert. 🙁

EDIT: It's almost like I treat myself better when I get bad news than when I get good news... That's not weird, is it?

Can I ask what your "Ebola in Africa" moment was on your application?

I got worms in Africa, close enough?? 😉

In all seriousness, I'm very excited about this school, and shocked to receive an secondary with "mere mortal" stats. Here's hoping with all my other average applicants!! 😀

I received a secondary here a few days ago as well. My LizzyM is well below their average so needless to say this was a very pleasant surprise. Really trying not to get my hopes up too much but I can't help it!!!

"Bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off for them" lol

Just wanted to add my stats to the page--3.4 GPA, 31 MCAT, and I received a secondary a couple weeks ago. I'm less surprised now, browsing this thread, since it seems like high numbers aren't their priority.

Complete late July, rejected post secondary today at 4PM.

Sort of expected this one since they were one of the few schools that I applied to that did not accept pre-interview update letters. Probably the nicest rejection letter I received so far though! In the end, they weren't my top choice so I'm not too upset about the outcome.

I only wish the best for those who are still in the running. : )

What were your stats if you don't mind sharing? And were you IS or OOS?

I would prefer not to share stats (since that could identify me as an applicant), but I am IS. :pigeon: I can give you a hint that it is not very good, lol.

I believe, however, that UCSF is not as uptight about stats as other medical schools. This was from the letter, "This rejection does not mean that we believe you to be unqualified to attend this or any other School of Medicine on either personal or scholarly grounds or that we think that you will not become a fine physician. It simply reflects the enormous competitive pressure of highly qualified applicants for the limited number of positions here."
