2014-2015 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This sounds contradictory to what they said in the interview. To me, it sounded like they would send out most of their acceptances and the final pool would be from spots freed up from declining applicants. This was just my interpretation, you may have other information but it seems that if 2/3 came in March, a LOT of people will be waiting for a LONG time...to the point where a lot of good applicants would choose different options.
I can confirm optikos...at the interview they directly stated they only accept 1/3 of applicants in the fall and 2/3 in the spring from the final pool.

About 2/3 of is applicants come from final pool. Remember that most is applicants won't turn down Carver for other schools because it is so well regarded and is tuition is so much cheaper. Actually, Carver had basically no incentive to admit is applicants before final pool because most will still attend

Not sure how this sounds to some people but they literally said at my interview that once you have an interview, you have a 1/2 chance of getting accepted.

Ugh this is all so confusing! Earlier Optikos said the average time to decision is 5 weeks post interview:

Also, most of the acceptance dates are an average of 5 weeks after interviews.

How can this be if most of us are going to be sitting until March and most of the interviews are September-December?

Sorry for asking questions, just trying to get this all figured out!

When you get the initial decision it is either accept or final pool. If you are final pool your final decision is deferred until March 15th.

Agreed with FindMe...you are either accepted 4-6 weeks post interview or final pooled. 1/3 of total acceptances come from those who are accepted 4-6 weeks post interview the other 2/3 come from the final pool.

I have heard from several medical students, whom were IS applicants, that the majority of IS applicants, are accepted in March from the final pool. I'm guessing the same holds true for OOS applicants. If I remember correctly, this was the vibe I got from interview day. Definitely don't lose hope, even though this waiting process is terribly nerve-racking!

She is!!! :biglove:I met her in person and hosted her, and she was such a delight to meet 🙂

Sorry to hear about the sad news... I am optimistic much good news and love from other schools awaits you/has already visited you!!
The thing about @researchismymiddlename is that she has this unusual eye "problem:" mirror vision. She looks at other people and sees her own virtues reflected in them! She's one of the incredible physicians in training we see all around us on sdn. (Blushing BengaliBrat. . . .)

OMG!! 😆 😳 That's the sweetest and cutest compliment ever!!

I think we are getting to the point of "final pool land." The forum died between this time and early January last year for Carver.

I called in today, and they said:

There are still several meetings in the rolling (pre-final pool) phase. That will likely continue until the 3rd or 4th week of January. They will NOT meet next week. Unsure of whether they met today.

Daughter accepted today. With her permission, info is as follows- IS, 3.6/36, interviewed 9/19.

Also accepted today. Life is good.

Interviewed way back on 10/15, felt like an eternity ago, especially after many people have been saying decisions would be 4-6 weeks post-interview or into the abyss of final pool. Keep the faith my friends.

Congrats!!!
Stats if you don't mind?

Quick question:

If you have a later interview (1st week of January), are you interviewing solely for for the final-pool/waitlist or do you actually have a chance of being accepted weeks after the interview? (since Carver does rolling admissions). Last year, people who interviewed in late January were told that they were no longer accepting applicants via rolling admissions (i.e. after this point interviewees were either placed in the final pool or rejected).

You are probably put straight into the final pool. They are currently around 4 weeks behind (at least, that is what I have heard), and they finish with rolling in the 2nd or 3rd week of January. Hopefully someone else can confirm.

pre, and that is okay! I have two interviews so far, I'll be okay!

I have been rooting for you from the very beginning after spying you way back in June in the nontrad forums... I am sorry for the rejeciton but also very happy you have two interviews lined up!! Congratulations 🙂

Someone mentioned last week that the adcom was not meeting tomorrow. Are we expecting any news tomorrow or not (does this affect decisions on the 23rd or is it the 30th)?

I called them last week, and they said they weren't meeting this week, which I assume means we won't hear anything today, though I guess I'm not sure if the Tuesday notifications are from, say, the prior week's deliberations. I really doubt anything happens today. Whatever, I'm gonna make some eggnog and read a book.

Edit - grammar

Thanks fleece, it's what I assumed and it makes the most sense. Enjoy your book and stress free Tuesday, it is kind of nice not to worry about it this afternoon.

I read somewhere in the earlier posts that theres a $150 travel stipend? But I didn't see that on my II email. Does anyone know anything about that? Thank you in advance! 😀

Carver is generous in that they have a travel and lodging reimbursement based on your expenses, original location, and if you have a FAP. The FAP is needed for the full $150, but there are ways to get $100 and $50 to offset the cost of travel. Also Carver requires no deposit if you are offered an acceptance.
