2014-2015 University of Massachusetts Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Didn't apply this year but wanted to comment on how insane that is because I came from that school of thought you know as a senior in high school picking from BU, NU, and UMass I was like duh with the costs but BU med is currently listed at total cost of $76,380, no matter how crappy boston medical center is the fact that those costs are so similar is a scary reality so yes it is still slightly cheaper than the avg but not much anymore... Wow. harsh reality.

How have you concluded that BMC is a bad hospital?

That's not what my point was but it has been fined in recent years for sanitation problems and can't seem to keep standards with other area hospitals not to mention the security concerns in the surrounding neighborhood, I've been there plenty of times and agree with the general consensus of boston residents and patient reviews that it doesn't measure up to its competition. Didn't say anything about the care just its appearance and cleanliness in general threw me off, as it did many others, nothing about the care and quality of its fantastic medical staff

...what?

I would have to agree with RedSox143. I've been at BU School of Medicine for a graduate program (also took BU's first year medical classes) and that place is depressing. The library can feel suffocating and cramped, and the study rooms on other floors always fill up quickly. I know employees at BMC who complain about their jobs profusely and say that their department is having trouble retaining medical staff. I have also witnessed quite a bit of drama between faculty members that blew up and resulted in a faculty member loosing his teaching position. Of course these are personal anecdotes that I have witness during my one year at BU. Every place has pros and cons. I'm sure other people love it there. On a positive note, I thoroughly enjoyed their M1 physiology course. Just thought I would share my 2 cents that you don't get to see on interview day.

Does anyone have any insight into the mysterious process by which UMass makes their way through their postinterview pile??

My bad ahead of time if this has been asked/answered before, couldnt find it anywhere and thought Id ask

Yes--each team is responsible for bringing their group of interviewees to the rest of the admissions committee. If they like your MMI reviews in combination with your application, you will be brought for review. At least that's what I remember from interview day.

Any insight into why they wait so long (late April-May, according to what I've read) to reject people who (I'm assuming) were never chosen for review?

So since they have started placing applicants on the waitlist, does that mean that any updates from here on out are destined to be waitlist/rejection emails??

This is what I am interested to know. On their website, it says, once the class is full, all applicants would be made aware. Does this mean all 125 acceptance that have been sent out? Cause, as above implied, if that has happened, we should all either be waitlisted or rejected soon? Or are they actively still sending acceptances?

Calling does not clear up this issue, as they are rather vague about what the committee does.

Idk. It may be too much to say that only waitlists/rejections are waiting for those who haven't heard yet. Maybe your team just forgot about you and when you get looked at again they put you at the top of the list. Unlikely, but possible.

They definitely have 125 acceptances out, though.

I'm under the impression that if your interview day hasn't been reviewed yet then you could get accepted, otherwise it's going to be a waitlist or rejection. I think they're done with their acceptances at this point.

Does anyone know if they have reviewed March 10th interviewees yet? Has anyone from that date received a WL or acceptance email?

I am still waiting to hear as well. I am also a reapplicant.

Yep. Still playing the waiting game. Interviewed 2/12, Anyone else in the same boat?

Waitlisted today. Interviewed at the beginning of March

It seems like they bounce all over the place with notifying interviewees. Are they letting people know in order of WL rank?

I assume their WL is ranked, but only an adcom could tell us if the order WL notifications are given are significant. If you ask me, though, I would assume yes?

Of course it's tiered in some way, but also probably grouped: URM's, research, service, etc.

For what it's worth (not much) I'm a current UMASS student, interviewed in September, and got accepted in late April. I was never waitlisted.

Is UMass reasonable with aid/scholarships? Their sticker price is shockingly high...

My meeting with financial aid office today gave me the impression that their umass aid/scholarship is not very generous. As of now I am expected to pay fully with loans, which is a huge turn-off for me and really clouded my perception of this school during second look. I could be wrong, maybe I'm just not scholarship-worthy to them!

I think they leave a few open spots through the cycle just to try catching the superstars.

memberncc1701 interviewed back in September (of their application cycle) though...

I just asked because I know a few years ago (maybe 3?) the adcom was really backed up (even more than usual 😛) and didn't release most acceptances until April/May, then started waitlisting people even later...

Oh hot damn I had no idea.

I wonder if anyone's been accepted off the waitlist yet. I heard from a med student on Saturday that there should be movement soon as they are meeting to do second reviews on applicants.

Let me preface this by saying I have no idea and this is just a hunch, but we know that the first review happens relatively soon after you interview (< a few weeks), and then I bet they re-review everyone who remains in the Spring once they have a better idea what their class looks like..I'd imagine this re-reviewing process is probably what that med student means by "second reviews". It looks like they're in the midst of these second reviews now since folks from Oct etc are getting waitlisted...I wouldn't give up hope! I don't think the med student meant they're second reviewing only those that have been waitlisted.
