2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They are extremely thoughtful, the assistant dean of admissions spends quite a bit of time talking with the applicants and explaining the strengths of the school. The financial aide assistant dean comes in and gives an informative and well thought out presentation on $ available. Everyone there was friendly and genuine in their interest in us as applicants. At the end the assistant dean of admissions gave us a thorough explanation of how to navigate the interview season and how to handle multiple acceptances. He was very helpful about how to communicate with prospective schools letting them know their priority etc...
The interview was fantastic. Very relaxed, conversational with some "required" questions to probe how much you know or have thought about medicine and the direction medicine is heading.
Hot catered lunch with about 20 current med students leading discussion Q/A.
Most interviewing students were MD/ MPH applicants... talking with them during lunch etc it seemed like each person was a "super star" applicant. I was very impressed with each of them.
The school has a tremendous amount of opportunities for patient interaction from day one all the way through.WOW!!! Three affiliated hospitals within walking distnce of each other. One hospital has over 1550 beds...
Applicants who matriculate here will certainly be prepared for residency.

Makes sense that some MD-only applicants would have had interviews already. If I recall correctly from the thread last year, the first wave of interviews, in September, are for the tip-top candidate who UM, alongside other universities I imagine, expect will have multiple acceptances ... as @Javelin wrote above. I believe their results come out in October, and then a new round of interviews comes around in November, with those decisions before Christmas time.

Congrats lady. What was your status before the II?
I think I'm on hold 🙁

I had the "has been reviewed status" with the applicants will be invited for an interview based on their point total etc. And thank you! I was completely surprised at this one!

Ah ok. I definitely am on hold then cause mine just says reviewd and "a final decision has not been made." Dang it -_-

MD/MPH interview on Nov 10-11. If anyone wants to coordinate, please PM me 🙂

Congratulations to everyone with interviews here! I used to work at Miller, and it really is one of the most awesome medical schools out there!

Quick question: I have had the following status since submitting my app nearly 2 months ago:

"Your Application to the UM Miller School of Medicine is complete and is currently being reviewed by the Admissions Committee."

Anybody else still stuck on this status? It seems like there are a lot of different statuses, and no one really has this one for too long. Anyone else in the same situation?

Congrats on your II!!
Didn't realize they let people know on the weekend. Figured the Admissions Offices would be closed.

My status changed from "your application is currently being reviewed" to "Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their evaluation score from the Admissions Committee review. You will be contacted by email if you are selected for an interview. Interview invitations are extended between August and March."

Good sign, or bad sign??

I think it is not a bad sign at all! There was talk on last year's thread that it could be good-neutral based on your evaluation score so...good luck! I had both statuses before receiving the II, though I had the "has been reviewed" since late July/early August.

Have there been any rejections?

I have been keeping up with this thread. I have not seen any rejections mentioned, but this relies on what people post. Some people are on a hold status, but that's about it.

And something to keep in mind... they do M/F interviews starting October 1 and they list dates all through next year! You are allowed to select your four top options date-wise and they will later confirm which date you receive.

Me too. This is the only status I've had after being complete since early August.

Wait, I thought ORM was an over-represented minority? E.g. Asian. A white person would not be an ORM, as they are not a minority. Isn't this the case?
I think they were just implying they didn't have URM boost.

same..only complete since mid august, but i wish i would get some kind of status update!! miami is awesome

has anyone gotten an interview that forgot to put a brief description next to their activities for that question that asked you to list them in chronological order?

Does any one know how long it takes for the AdCom to change the photograph status to received?

I was complete at the end of august. I just tried logging in and saw something about interview dates but the page was being weird and super slow and sketchy. Then when I logged in again, it was gone and looked normal.

Oh med school status pages, why do you play with my heartstrings so?

Does any one know how long it takes for the AdCom to change the photograph status to received?

It was about 3-5 days when I applied in aug.

After 6 weeks, my status finally changed from "under review" to "Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee ...You will be contacted by email if you are selected for an interview. Interview invitations are extended between August and March. "

It seems like this is a "hold" status that will remain for a loooong time lol. But does anybody have more information on what this status meant in years past?

Anyone know the best/cheapest way to get from FLL airport to the interview site? Taxi seems to be easiest and only takes about 30 mins, but costs around $60-$75 according to some online fare estimators. Maybe the Super Shuttle? Would it be better to just fly into MIA airport for $100 more so that the trip from airport to interview site is cheaper?

If you're not going to rent a car I recommend flying into MIA. Cab is expensive. If you're doing md/mph interview then rent a car for sure.

Thanks for the input. I'm MD-only and I wouldn't feel comfortable driving, so not planning to rent a car. I guess it's best if I just fly into MIA since many hotels seem to offer complementary shuttle service.

Hello fellow SDNers!

I have MD/mph interviews for Oct 27-28. I am unfortunately 3 months shy of turning 25 so renting a car on my own is extremely expensive. Is anybody interviewing these dates and is renting a car?? Please PM me if its possible for me to join in on the ride and to split the fees!

I have a similar problem for that day so I'd like to tag along! We can explore Palm Beach together 🙂

I would appreciate if I could do this as well. Please PM me if you are renting a car and going to the MPH interview on the 28th.

Metro rail pretty easy from MIA. If you've ever lived in a big city it's a great option. If not take a cab or shuttle 🙂

I think a shuttle is like $5-$20 (I can't remember) to get from FLL to Miami Airport…from the Miami Airport your hotel can probably pick you up or you can use the metro rail. I wouldn't recommend doing this at nighttime though, just because I've heard it's not the safest.

I'd also recommend those of you guys' getting rental cars to get it from some place other than the airport. Rental prices are DRAMATICALLY different from airport vs one mile away from airport and many times the rental car company can pick you up from where you are.

Just logged onto my status page, and I apparently was offered an interview without getting an email. Complete 7/16. II sometime within the past two weeks.

Both MD and MD/MPH
Wait, really? And I had been doing so well NOT neurotically checking status pages every day...

John seriously made incredibly neurotic people….100x more neurotic. Jeez, thanks John 😛
lol, I'm sure everyone appreciates it! Weird that happened with you!

Guess I should've applied mph

You can still apply, if you want. MD/MPH and MD-only are selected by 2 separate application process. (As I was told last year.) I applied MD only last year, went to my interview, was encouraged by my interviewer to apply to both, applied to both and got accepted to both.

So if you are interested, you definitely can do it.
