2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You can still apply, if you want. MD/MPH and MD-only are selected by 2 separate application process. (As I was told last year.) I applied MD only last year, went to my interview, was encouraged by my interviewer to apply to both, applied to both and got accepted to both.

So if you are interested, you definitely can do it.
Not interested at all... just want an interview and it seems most of the interviews that were going out (on SDN) were to MD/MPH... really it was just sarcastic

Has anyone opted for student hosting? I am currently trying to decide between this or a hotel and any input would be greatly appreciated!

Note: I do enjoy staying with student hosts, but I am leery since I will be traveling a lot and would also enjoy the comfort of an actual bed.

I didn't do student hosting; I did a hotel and several other interviewees did too (I think very few stayed with a host). Miami was such an amazing school…I wouldn't risk not getting enough sleep for it. But depending on whether or not you are MD or MDMPH your interview could be day 1 or day 2. Also keep in mind that most medical students at Miami live a good ways away from the Miami school (like downtown).

Thanks so much for your reply! I am unfamiliar with the area so I was not quite sure where students lived!

Segueing into the next logical question... if anyone is interested in splitting the cost of a hotel for a 10/26-10/27 at Spring Hill Suites, I would be down for that!

Most interviewees were also from the Miami area as a FYI in case it's kind of hard for you to find someone 🙁

I feel ya... we've already spent thousands to get this far what is 100 more for a solid private room... I'm all for hotels

I have a similar problem for that day so I'd like to tag along! We can explore Palm Beach together 🙂
I would appreciate if I could do this as well. Please PM me if you are renting a car and going to the MPH interview on the 28th.

It's still a bit early, but if no one contacts me about sharing a ride with him/her, we could try to arrange something together. I'd like to avoid having to rent the car myself since not only am I'm under 25, but I also am not insured, so I'm not sure what the extra fees will be. Anyway, we can try to figure this out in a couple weeks! Good luck prepping forthe interview! 🙂

I wouldn't worry too much about "setting up a car" to get to Palm Beach. You're probably HIGHLY likely to find someone there who's willing to drive you to Palm Beach (fellow interviewees were an amazingly nice group of applicants). You could also try using the Double Tree location for Enterprise to get a cheap rental car!

submitted my dates... hope i get my first choice!

Is it looked down upon if you have no substantial research for this school? Say, 1 semester of basic lab research...

Can anyone give me an idea of how competitive I am for Miami?

MCAT 36, 14phys 11verbal 11bio
cGPA 3.64
m&sGPA 3.63
Only 1 semester of research
various amounts of volunteering
good letters of rec
Lots of shadowing but little clinical otherwise
Worked several jobs throughout college both in summer and during semester

How long till we find out which date we get for interview? Did most of u get your first choice?

Unless you are applying for MD-PhD, I highly doubt this is looked down on, although you should for the sake of any medical school be acquainted with the idea of what research is and why it's important. A lot of my research was NOT based in a laboratory or "scientific" in nature.

Miami values people who are VERRRRY dedicated to service-- many armed service members for instance. If you were a former Army Medic or cadet or can show a strong dedication to service in other ways, Miami will love you. I'm not sure how important numbers are for this school to be honest as their average MCAT for last year's class for instance went from 26 to 43.

Why haven't you been able to pick a date yet? I got my first choice but I also called in and their system was malfunctioning when I called in.

Got the II on a Saturday and the date confirmation on Monday! I did get my first choice, but I also selected a date in later October so I'm glad it worked in my favor! Good luck!

I chose 4 dates as my first through fourth preference and submitted it... Sounds like I should hear Monday which one I am assigned

I also ranked four dates (just in case)! They also tell you to download their app, which is mostly just interview information and a more direct link to check your status. They also list dates they release decisions!!!!

For now at your stage it's fairly anonymous. I was merely teasing about someone's inability to read an email. Probably out of sheer excitement 😉

In terms of anonymity, As you get higher up in training it becomes less and less anonymous. Best advice I can give you is don't troll and try to keep it professional.

Gotcha! And thanks! I'm not one for trolling so I should be good on that front 🙂

I assume this is referring to me. Inability to read an email? I haven't even received the email yet so yeah, it's pretty difficult to read... Woman of science was simply helping me with what to expect from her experience.. which is the point of these threads 🙂 I don't see any concern of anonymity or trolling....

Did they mention anything about interview -> accepted statistics on interview day? MSAR and USNWR data imply about 70%, but the data on Miami's website makes it look significantly lower.

Do you happen to have a link to where you see that on their site?

I'm pretty sure what you're looking at on the website is the number that matriculated instead of the number that were actually accepted.

Right, but assuming 50% yield (which I think is pretty conservative), 150 offers out of 350 interviewees gives 33%, which is much much lower than the 70% indicated by the other data sets.

Congrats to y'all who have interviewed already and are waiting for decisions! Now if only I could go down to Miami myself lol. I'd really like to visit this school, for I've heard so many good things about it.

Complete late-July and still "under review." No bueno?

Does anybody have any additional information on areas where med students live? I saw a post that said most of them live a good ways away from the medical school, but no other specifics besides that.
