2014-2015 University of Pittsburgh Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
+2, but I will still stem and stew on it for a little bit longer. Hang in there everyone!

I filled it out, and I do not believe it's binding.

Let's hope, right? It'd be some sweet irony if the three of us that said we'll probably withdraw all just unintentionally committed ourselves

Can someone please post the portal link? The ones from the II and secondary haven't been working for me for the last couple of days...or maybe the website is just down?

How small is the fraction of people outright rejected?

Does anyone know 1. when we'll hear if we're first- or second-tier waitlist and 2. approximately what percent of people get off the waitlist?

1. They are mailing letters out today that detail whether we are 1st tier or second tier.

2. No idea, but apparently 75% of the class (no data to support this, just anecdotes from current students) is taken from the waitlist. If we knew how many students get waitlisted total, we could get an estimate (albeit a very, very rough one) of the percent of acceptances from the waitlist, but not too accurate, because we'd only have data of matriculated WLers, not accepted.

Woah nellie... stealth admissions release?

Accepted! Was not expecting this at all... I was confidently expecting a waitlist, which is why I've slacked off on getting the PTSP app complete. Congrats to all those accepted and good luck to those on the waitlist! The prospect of visiting Conflict Cafe again is very, very tempting.

Omg so happy to hear this news!! CONGRATULATIONS to you and all the other acceptances!

I just got accepted! CREPES HERE WE COME

The first thing I saw when logging in to the status page on the portal was a NOT COMPLETED in bold red letters and started freaking out about forgetting some important form to have a complete application. Turns out it was the admission data form, and through the magic of penguins, I was acceepted! Crisis averted. :penguin: :penguin:

ME TOO.

Does anyone know how the merit scholarships are handled? According to last year's thread, people got a physical letter in the mail with info about second look and scholarships around February 3rd. But no one posted the nature of the scholarships.

Waitlisted. Not too worried, as I've got an offer elsewhere I am currently planning to take. Congratulations to all those accepted!

Varies by person.

Waitlisted. But I'll take it. Pitt is one of my absolute top choices, so here's hoping for an eventual acceptance!

Congrats to all accepted! And chin up to the waitlisters, I (and most of my class) came off the waitlist!

This. Also, they may decide to be more conservative this year with their outright acceptances upfront because (again) they oversubscribed the class of 2018 by what I believe is a double digit # of seats and it's exacerbating a structural issue in scheduling clerkships so that everyone gets them done instead of pushing a clerkship off into 4th year.

Congrats to everyone accepted!!! Waitlisters, hang in there!

Not really sure where you're getting this information. Our class doesn't really talk about the admissions process. I think I've heard 2 MCAT scores, 2 people's initial acceptances, no GPAs, and 3 people's scholarships since I started 8/14. What I can say is that there was a lot of switching around in the last month and the people who are in our class are really psyched to be here. I personally came off the waitlist in March. I wrote a letter of interest, but I'm not sure if it helped or not. If Pitt is one of your top choices, I'd say it wouldn't hurt to show them a little love. 😉 Good luck guys! Looking forward to seeing some of you at Second Look (whenever it is)!

Is there a class of 2019 page yet? And is there anything we have to do to accept our seat?

Accepted! Pitt is great though the snow is ridiculous here today! Congrats to all other accepted applicants and good luck to those on the waitlist

Is the snow ridiculous today? This is pretty standard January weather IMO, bit of snow q2-4 days, enough to made uncleared hilly side streets treacherous. 😛

The rain that became ice was the ridiculous part to me, but I'm more of a southern weather kind of person. Anyway, roads near Pitt always get cleared rapidly.

WL for MD admissions, and I just withdrew my application. I loved Pitt, but will be pursuing my MD/PhD elsewhere. Good luck to those still on the waitlist, and congrats to the recent acceptances! Hoping to re-visit Pitt when I apply to residencies 😀

A second look page will be made soon for people attending second look. Use that as your "Class of 2019" page until the summer, then the Orientation coordinators will make an official page for people intending to come to Pitt.

That was class of 2017. Growing pains due to a change from rolling to non-rolling. Last year's entering class was fine (around 147).

Ah, excellent. Sadly, it does not resolve the structural clerkship issue. 🙁

The fact that a good chunk of the class must finish at least one clerkship early in MS4 due to there being slightly less clerkship spots than students over the years (due to ebb and flow of returning PhD/research year students and the occasional over-enrollment). While it generally does not cause a major problem, it is inconvenient for the summer-MS4 crunch of AIs, aways, and possibly Step 2, and, of course, there is the occasional idiot who schedules a clerkship in the middle of interview season and will not, as a matter of previously disclosed policy, be given time off to interview in a required clerkship.

I know a good number of people (myself included) that purposely scheduled either a research month or elective during third year. Since we start the academic year in May rather than June/July, it's not really a huge deal to have one last clerkship over the summer. Also, the class of 2017 has substantially more MD/PhD (& PSTP?) students than the class of 2016, so while their enrollment numbers were larger it may somewhat balance out when they leave for their research years. I'm not sure how many people are finishing their PhD this year, though.

It looks that way and thanks for the information.
You are like the original penguin. If you know what I mean.

Again, I reiterate that it is not a problem for most, but I have seen a certain number of people get into a crunch over the MS4 summer trying to squeeze a bunch of time-sensitive things into June 30-Sept 15. I suppose having an intensive clerkship late had its benefits, but would I have chosen that situation? Nope. I looked like a rockstar compared to any MS3. 😀

Just checked my status, Admitted! Feels awesome after so many waitlist/rejections! Anybody know where I can pick up some cool Pitt swag?

Fanatics.com has lots of college stuff

So. Much. Waiting..... I think this is one of the schools where there is a good amount of WL movement before the May 1st deadline (previously May 15th or whatever). I guess it might be time to send out some more love letters...

I know. BUT: Monday is Groundhog Day, which means that, if the groundhog sees its shadow, all of us go into hiding on the waitlist for 6 more weeks until we find out, but if not, then movement will come early.

The Pitt bookstore (Pitt University Store)

The Pitt Shop has sweatshirts and t-shirts that say "PITT School of Medicine"

Also the local Target has Pitt swag 🙂

If you go to the Pitt store on Forbes Ave you can order customized hoodies for the same price as the one in the store. You can change the color and writing! Last time I checked, the shop only had Grey in stock. I Navy with less writing (Got Pitt Medicine instead of school of medicine).

Also, I believe our local SNMA and AMA chapters sell stuff too to raise money. I'm pretty sure they don't care who is buying their stuff, so if you get their contact info, I bet they'd have it ready for your on second look day. 😛

Wait WHAT? And I've been waiting for SNMA to have another hoodie sale...
