2014-2015 University of Washington Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I updated the google doc to include a graph that charts the waitlist acceptances. The graph should update itself as more data is added. I also added the 2013 graph to it for comparisons. This year is moving very similar to the 2013 graph so far. I wonder what it will look like by the end of the season.

I got my site placement for Spokane today. I have to admit, I am a little disappointed, as all of my family lives 5-20 minutes away from UW. Anyone else in the same position? Or, are there any current students who could tell me more about how the two sites compare in regard to instructors and the facilities, labs, etc?

I just got accepted off of the waitlist and got my site placement of Spokane today as well. Can't say I'm too surprised given that I don't have a spouse or children and also the whole waitlist thing. Also have all my family in the Seattle area. I'm looking at the silver lining (lower housing costs, better weather?) and the fact that it'll be an adventure. I emailed the admissions office in response to the placement email and they suggested looking at this facebook group for finding roommates:

In regards to those of you who got 'WWAMI'd' out to Spokane, coming from someone who spent my first year at a WWAMI site, it is what you make of it. You have the opportunity first of all to go to one of the best medical schools in the western US not to mention the country, secondly - you have the opportunity to meet several other unique classmates and make life-long friends. The friendships you make with your WWAMI classmates are awesome and different from those in the Seattle group. You'll stick together - if you allow yourself to get over getting 'WWAMI'd'. Congratulations to those of you who were accepted to the UWSOM and also those sent the Spokane site - trust me, you'll be fine, and you'll look back a year from now and be glad you got to come out to a different site for a year and a half. Good luck to the rest of you waiting!

I came off the waitlist last week, # 15, headed to Seattle. What is this facebook group I hear so much about?

So i have a possibly complicated question. I am originally from Idaho but moved to Utah to do my undergrad. I have since gotten utah residency in order to get the cheaper tuition. My wife however still has her Idaho drivers license and is still registeres to vote in idaho and is doing online classes through a college in Idaho. Any clue what my chances are for qualifying for WWAMI? I plan on ending up in Idaho and love the idea of doing parts of med school in idaho.

Your best bet is to speak with the residency office about this situation.

I am confused about the spreadsheet.... sometimes I see higher numbers on there than on the waitlist portal? Like the spreadsheet was at 27 when the website was at 26? Can anyone explain?

I think as people get accepted they update the spreadsheet but the UW website may not update as quickly depending on what time of day each EXCOM calls their applicants/ accepted students.

That makes sense. It seemed like something along those lines so I wanted to make sure. Thanks!

So I had emailed the admissions office about something else, and although they didn't say the waitlist had stopped moving, in the response (about two days ago) they did say they were not sure if they would be accepting any more students this year, and that if a seat opens up at this point in the admissions cycle, it would be "the last one available" .... I'm not sure if that's a standard answer or if it really means that this year is different and more of the accepted students have stuck with UW.

Since it's May 15th already and the movement really seems to have stalled, I'm seriously contemplating whether I should give up my spot. There are other programs and opportunities that have offered me places for the summer and for next year and I feel so bad making them wait for my response, especially when I'm one of their top choices for acceptance and am relatively far down on the UW list (late 30s)..... is anyone else in this situation? What are you guys going to do?

I was in this situation. It's up to you. In my opinion, it feels really nice to know where you are going. As a pre-med, you're used to stress/anxiety about "getting in," but it doesn't have to be that way. Enjoy your last free summer (of your life, possibly) and make it as stress-free and fun as you can. Constantly waiting on UW will make that harder.

Thank you so much for replying, just hearing that from someone else is really helpful. Much appreciated!!🙂

Has anyone else received this response from UW? Hoping wait list still might move some more...

I got a similar response. "All positions are confirmed at this time" but "historically there is some movement before orientation" but there is no way to know how many more spots the list will move.

So basically they filled all the seats early this year but they are going to keep us hanging until July...?

This is turning me into a WSU supporter and I don't like that feeling lol.

Does anyone know if this is different than any other years? What's the waitlist at so far?

They filled up the class when they made the waitlist over a month ago. This is the same as what happens every year. The only difference is this year less people wanted to go to another school. It could be due to a number of reason. Some of the ones I can come up with are:

1. New MCAT made people push to take the old one and applied with it.
2. New curriculum drawing more people to commit.
3. The school remained a top 10 medical school and made people want to go here.
4. Spokane was opened up to OOR accepted students.
5. Students will stay at their home site two years rather than one.
6. The second look event was really well attended and the accepted students seemed to be really impressed.

Now I don't know what the real reasons are, but these could be some of them. Any more waitlist movement is going to come from a student deciding not to go or if they defer their acceptance. This can happen at any time, or it may not happen at all. And if there is a student that decides to go defer, not go to medical school or to matriculate at another school, this can create a ripple effect at multiple schools.

Thank you for the insights @BABSstudent! I think you addressed the question that has been on many of our minds. The answer seems to be that yes, this year is different.

Does anyone know if you can request/ has anyone requested a file review before the waitlist has officially closed? At this point I would want to reapply before July.

Just more applicants, is what I think it is 😉.

Hey everyone!

Just wondering.. does anyone have any insight on UW's TRUST program? From what I have read, it looks like a great opportunity, but I was wondering if there is anyone out there who is going through or has gone through the program.

Specifically, I wonder (1) how much additional time is required for the program; (2) do you feel that it did/is actually preparing you for rural practice; (3) did it have any impact (positive or negative) or finding a residency or employment; and (4) if you could do it again, would you apply to TRUST again?

Going to put in one final plea for the waitlisted folks - if anyone knows someone who isn't planning to keep their spot, is thinking of deferring and is just waiting to get everything done, or for any reason is holding on to a seat they aren't going to keep... Per the admissions office they won't be taking anyone during orientation week this year because the activities are mandatory now due to the curriculum change. In previous years they could do those last-minute offers, but this time even if someone just doesn't show up or drops out during the first week, they won't be offering that spot to anyone else. This is the last week that they will be able to offer seats... so please don't wait until after orientation begins to say you're not attending this year! You would make someone else's day/year/life!

For everyone in the early 30's who was just missed... I feel your guys' pain! Good luck with your pursuits, I hope you found somewhere great to go and best of luck if you are reapplying! Wishing that next time is the charm for all of you <3

I know it's a long shot, but were there any OOR, ORM, high stats (LizzyM >78) applicants who got II's or acceptances this cycle?
