2014-2015 University of Washington Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was actually told we'd (SUCs) get feedback every 2-3 weeks.

My second SUC was a day short of 6 weeks from my first SUC. I heard we would get an update once a month, but clearly the timeline was not met last month as it has in years past. I am hoping though that they roll out some acceptances before the new year, but I have come to accept that nothing I can predict with them will be accurate. Here's crossing my fingers for good news still.

I kind of accepted the fact that they're not going to offer any acceptances to anyone on the SUC list until about March. Have they done this in previous years?

Please correct me if I am wrong, I believe, from past threads, there were people who got accepted from the SUC list before March, and there also were some who got rejected before they made the wait list.

This is correct.

I JUST GOT AN EMAIL ACCEPTANCE FROM MY EXCOM MEMBER! 🙂🙂🙂 I received a SUC email exactly one week ago as well. S/He said this is his/her first admissions meeting of the season, meaning it really depends on when your EXCOM member can present. As an OOR, I cannot be more thrilled. Top choice for sure. Best of luck to everyone and hope to see you all there!

Congratulations! I am so happy for you, and OOR acceptance from UW is an amazing honor.

Congrats to all accepted and best of luck to those who have yet to hear back!

Of course we get accepted as soon as we put down $1k at Western 🙂

But honestly I really couldn't care less.

I know right? I remind myself that I will be saving in the long term!

Is that a DO school? 'Cause I've put down $1k in the DO school in my state. I'm still waiting on UW, though - and not expecting the best right now . . . 🙁

Regardless, congrats to all of those accepted!

Yes that is why I submitted DO applications intentionally later - I hear they try and lock you down by throwing a huge ($2000+), non-refundable deposit with a two week deadline.

It is the D.O. school in Lebanon Oregon. It is really a great school and I would have been very proud to attend, I consider any medical school acceptance an honor. But I am especially enthused about attending UW, who would have thought a nobody like me could have ever been accepted to such a great school.

Congratulations on your acceptance! You are going to be a doctor!

Thank you very much and I absolutely agree. Sometimes it's easy to get distracted by options and different tracks in this crazy journey, but at the end of the day we will have the privilege to serve and help people. With that said, however, I am actually pleased to say that I was accepted to UWSOM and I can't wait to meet you all next summer!

To all of those waiting and thinking the worst, hang in there. This is my second go around and there is so much I doubted and struggled with (UW didn't even offer me a secondary last year), but I had to try again because this is what I wanted more than anything. Alright, drama aside good luck everyone and congrats to all of the acceptances!

SUC 🙁 OOS 🙁 interviewed earlier this week
The SUC email is slightly misleading. It says that they reviewed your academic record and interview and still have not made a decision. When I called them, they said it could also be that your EXCOM member was not able to present to a meeting yet (but that was not clarified in the email).

My EXCOM member emailed me in the middle of the meeting to congratulate me on my acceptance. They also said it was the first one of the season. Don't lose hope! My EXCOM meeting was exactly 4 weeks after my interview.

Mind sharing your stats?

Does anyone know where we can find more info on the dates of the new curriculum?

I'm not sure if this is the most up-to-date information, but if you go to the UWSOM website and search "curriculum renewal," click the first link, then click the link that says "structure of the curriculum," you will find very specific dates for each block of Phase 1.

So, I guess orientation should be around the same time as this year (end of August)?

can anyone give me the rundown of the differences between Seattle and Spokane? I know Spokane has the smaller classroom environment, but what else that Seattle has got to offer and Spokane does not? and vice versa?

Thank you so much! Merry Christmas to everyone! 🙂

I honestly cannot think of a single thing that Seattle has that Spokane does not unless you think larger class sizes is a perk. I mean, sometimes having a bigger class can have unique perks like more interest groups or more opportunities to make friends, but that isn't something that you can't do at another site. If an interest group doesn't exist, then just make it yourself.

I have friends at the Spokane site that have done research there, shadowed advanced specialties and matched into those competitive specialties (the most notable is one that I specifically know is attempting to match into neurosurgery and he has done everything at the Spokane site, including his research and first two years of medical school and many of his third year rotations). You would not believe the number of people that say they want to be at Seattle because they want to do a competitive specialty and think that being at another site will hinder their application or that they need to make good impressions in their first year of medical school. This is not true one bit but people still insist that it is.

I am a second year now and have gotten to see my WWAMI classmates come to Seattle and there is not a single difference in our education, and people from all sites have done research and our medical school CVs reflect the effort that each person has put into it.

I just want to wish everyone here a Merry Christmas! I hope you take this time to relax and not worry about apps. I don't want to say "if you work hard enough, everything will work out" because that's bulli**** and there is definitely an element of luck and numbers. HOWEVER, if you truly want this, then don't give up. Don't be afraid to go for broke again next year and do as much as you can to prepare for it and improve yourself. If you truly want this, then it's worth all the risk, time, and money and it will reflect in how well you do in medical school and as a doctor.

Cheers and Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Festivus for the restofus!

Thank you for the insights! I am trying to decide which site to attend 🙂. I really appreciate your great inputs on SDN over the years! Merry Christmas!!

Be yourself. Don't get too intimidated by it like I did (I was a nervous wreck) and study the following links.

Also, read The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. I just read it over break and I kept thinking about how valuable some of the themes and lessons in the book are for prospective students and practicing physicians. I also thought how it would've been a great resource for interviews in answering some questions about medicine, haha. Incredible book to read, nonetheless!

When did you submit your decision? They received my decision on 12/22, but I haven't heard from AMCAS, yet.

did you have to do anything to initiate the background check process? When I confirmed my acceptance on the portal, it said AMCAS would contact me first, but i have not heard anything...:S

Nope, I'm waiting for the same thing. When was your decision in?
