2014-2015 University of Washington Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does this gym/IM building have a climbing wall perchance? Because that'd definitely be a point for UWSOM as far as I'm concerned, haha.

Thanks for the detailed answer, btw!
There are a couple of rock climbing walls in the IMA and there is even a few outdoor walls that you can climb. I think it costs like $3.50 to climb and another $4.50 to rent equipment if you don't have it.

You must have a killer application if you're making decisions about schools based on whether or not they have rock climbing walls...I must say, I'm quite jealous. 😉

Hah, yeah right. I'm just joking. UW was a reach school for me and I couldn't be more psyched to get an II.

Has anyone from Wyoming heard about interview invites?

I received an email this past Friday (9/19) regarding my interview date. My interview is scheduled for October 3rd, I'm excited, it's so soon!

How was the interview if you don't mind me asking! Hope it went well!!

The interview day as a whole was great. Getting a tour of the health sciences building and hospital was interesting since I already spend so much of my time there (as an UG, classes and lab etc), but there were still some new spaces I got to see that were specific to the medical school and students. All of the students I interacted with were extremely friendly, approachable and down to earth. My fellow interviewees were great too! 🙂

As for the interview itself, they really do stick pretty closely to the 30 minute time frame. However, there is a whole lot packed into it. It mostly falls in line with what they have on the interview website: motivation for becoming a physician, ethical scenarios, healthcare and health policy etc. It was mildly stressful just because of the way that it is structured (fast-paced, constantly changing subjects), but my interviewers were very nice people so I still felt relatively at ease.

Thanks 🙂 Glad to hear the day was great! Still crazy how things will be partially determined by that 30 minute interview. Seems like the interview feedback page on SDN is pretty accurate. Did you have a role play scenario, or was it more just like "what would you do if xyz?" Thanks again for the feedback! Hope you hear good news back!

Hey no problem, happy to do what I can to help. I had a full role-play scenario. Thanks for the well wishes!

Just got off with the phone with the admissions office and they said for those of us interviewing in Spokane the two dates will be November 12th and December 3rd. She said that they will send out the invitational emails with specific times (in the case of those who got the general II email) about a week or two beforehand. This is going to be a brutally long wait :dead:

how do we know if we are interviewing in spokane? Just the thing on the secondary?

I guess so. If you said that you'd prefer to interview at the Spokane campus.

Any OOR who received II get an official date yet? almost a month since I received my invitation but the wait is so worth it 🙂

I was told when I called last week that there were only 2 spots left for November and that they'd be filled up quickly for OOR. So, we're likely looking at at least December. I was also told that we'd find out a month before the date, so we probably won't hear anything until next month some time :/

Any Idaho residents still have "You will be reviewed to determine your relative competitiveness for interview" as your status? I was complete 8/22 and no changes! Last time I applied (for E2013) I got an interview immediately and now just silence. Buzzkill!

Aw man.. When did you get your II?

Anyone receive a Washington TRUST II? TRUST applicant here and I received an II but have no idea if it's for just the MD program or the TRUST MD. I guess you would only know if you have scheduled your interview for February 9-12th in Spokane? Anyone know how many people they interview for TRUST?

I am a TRUST applicant as well, but haven't heard about any kind of interview. 🙁 I am an IS re-applicant and really hoping to get some <3 They are a phenomenal school for those of us who want to do Rural medicine.

I was told in the past that for TRUST, they interview around 45 people for a total of 10 slots...5 on eastern WA, 5 on Western.

II today! Complete 8/28, 3.55 cGPA, 3.43 sGPA, 31 MCAT(10/11/10), state resident.

Just got my interview date: 11/14 in Seattle. Anyone else interviewing then?

Rejection! In the mail. I'm an MSTP applicant. This was my biggest reach, but also my top choice. :-/

Wow I guess choosing Spokane to interview gets you a date faster...?
Yeah I received my solidified date today as well. I'm pretty sure she said there are interviews going on around that same time in Seattle when I called the office. I'm sure you'll get a date around the same time.

Has anybody had issues uploading their picture in the interview portal? Mine won't upload for done reason.

They have pretty specific requirements. It has to be a jpg, can't be larger than a certain filesize, and I think the dimensions might even be constrained.

Thanks! Got it to work 🙂

Some of the best cragging in the U.S. is an hour's drive from Seattle at Index. It's just really, really hard. I've climbed 5.9s there that would be solid 5.10 anywhere else, and 5.10d that feels more like .11c. I've heard that trend continues as you move up in the grades as well...

I recently heard that Idaho WWAMI applicants will now be spending their first 2 years at the Moscow site. Can anyone confirm that?

That is true. The new curriculum calls for immediate patient interaction and students will be placed with a local physician for the first two years for a longitudinal experience. As such, you kind of have to stay in your first year site for the full first two years. That also means the WWAMI sites will have a much lower student to teacher ratio than the WA sites.

I think the only exception will be Wyoming until they have the space for second year students.

Thanks for your input BABSstudent! Do you know if there will there be any variation for TRUST scholars, as they already have a plan for continuity with a physician? Does this also mean that we should expect more lessons to be broadcasted from Seattle?

I honestly am not sure. I would imagine the TRUST program will operate as it usually does with minor modification to adapt to the new schedule. But that sounds like a great question to ask during your interview.

Applying MSTP super late haha... Is the autobiographical essay the only essay for MSTP? I don't see any of the prompts on the first page of this thread in my application. Also would it be a bad idea to not answer that question if my PS is basically a description of my journey to medicine?

I heard the new curriculum for Idaho WWAMI is 18 months straight of pre-clinical education at Moscow with an aim for earlier patient exposure/hands on learning, then possible gap time for projects (maybe RUOP?)/research/Step 1 prep. I spoke with a couple 3rd year med students here in the Boise Track and they preferred the education at Moscow versus Seattle. In Moscow, there were more chances to learn b/c less people to compete with for clinical opportunities and WWAMI professors who are personable and research comes second to their students' education.

I am all for it! Moscow seems a great place to hang out (and nice to take on less loan debt than Seattle living expenses)..Just need to stay away from the Corner Club during exam time!

Edit: Or maybe that is the best time to be at the Club..lol

Are you guys OOR? I signed up for a student host, but it's not guaranteed. If you are OOR or traveling into Seattle, when are you arriving/leaving?
Ya I'm OOR, I'm staying with a colleague of mine who is a current MS1 there. Arriving prolly around 10 pm the Thursday before and leaving around 1 pm on Saturday.

same, I'm now just wondering what will happen to you, me, and others in this same situation. :corny: Others have been rejected outright, so no silent rejections here.

i'm in the same boat! i was just wondering if it wouldbe any help to write them some kind of letter? i REALLY would love to go here. would it be dumb to write them?

I finally broke down and wrote to them, haha. No one replied with either a response, rejection or secondary. The weeks past the stated deadline keep piling up. For me it has turned into watching an ameba under a microscope. :corny:
