2014-2015 University of Washington Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm in the basement of a chemistry lab with no reception - but I feel like all I have to wait for is a final email :/

I interviewed 11/12 in Seattle, haven't heard anything yet.

I just got a call listed as WA and my heart dropped. It's been a long terrible day, I'm incredibly sick, and I'm refreshing my email every 10 minutes.

"Finally!" I think, "I can't believe it's happening". I answer, "Hello, this is OP" and the voice on the other end exclaims,

"Hello, OP I am calling to talk to you about a great new product we have that we believe you'd love . . . " I drop the phone. Never hang up. Go to the kitchen and grab some chocolate and tea. My watch continues . . .

Same...guess perhaps I'll get some sort of an email tomorrow telling me I'm under consideration or rejected. Although I'm still confused about how this works - whether they call or email or what day they let you know. Hard to live life normally without jumping every time your phone rings.
They will call, email comes a few days later.

Any Seattle interviews from 11/14 here?
Yup. Still nothing. Maybe it's different for OOR? All of the 1-2 day turn arounds have been residents right?

I want to be thankful for something this Thanksgiving!

Did you get the email message indicating they were still processing your application earlier this week @RelaxingALittle? When did you get an email verifying your application was received?
I got an email that my app was complete on Sept 26th and an email saying they are going to invite me for an interview on Nov 19th. They haven't indicated the date yet, but I know it will fall on one of the Feb dates on the web site (2-5th I think).

I haven't even interviewed yet - but question for current UWSOM med students (WWAMI locations preferable):

How much are you taking in loans per year?

I currently have a $400+ rent and live pretty reasonably (within $1000 per month for everything and dinners/drinks out - Boise is cheap!). Assuming I budget the exact same way, what could you predict per year in loans? I don't expect to receive any money from parents.

Trying to get an idea of what kinda loans UW requires...200K for all other OOS

This was sent a while ago but from experience you can expect to take out about $45k the first two years to account for total cost of attendance and then probably $65k for years 3 and 4, tuition fees go up for clinical years. Although by the time you start, curriculum will be different but I'm sure you still pay the same. Expect $200k or more in debt for full cost.

This is very true. If you happen to be married with a spouse that pays living expenses or live with a parent with a similar arrangement, as an IS resident with the $9k yearly grant you will graduate with about $130k in debt. This is probably the best possible outcome.

Yes and I recommend doing WWAMI safari for clinical years so UW pays your rent and travel. Although it can kind of be rough traveling all the time

If we decide to do one or two rotations in WA critical to our planned residency then from there move off to do the WWAMI safari, how much would we expect to save during years 3 and 4? Based on what we were told during interview day, it sounds like there could be a lot of savings taking this route, but I'm not sure how this impacts your lease in Seattle, since I'm guessing that your returns to WA could come anytime during the clinical years, at which point you would need to have a Seattle apartment ready to go.

In regards to the post you deleted. I actually also began looking at getting into UW IM residencies just in case I didn't get in because that's how much I loved the program and Seattle in general . . . I'm not expecting good news next week.

Hopefully not many people saw it. I meant it for another thread about residency programs and there is no point having it here to worrying people applying for medical school, so I tried to delete it ASAP.

Has anyone who received the "still under consideration" email had any further updates?

There once was a school named U-DUB
Whose silence falls like a thud
Deposits are coming due, oh crud
Deposit I must, or live as a dud
Errrr, my future is clear as mud

hey guys,
Got II couple weeks ago and going to interview next week. Have been a WA resident since HS but parents recently moved to another country last year. Just realized that my parents claimed me as dependent on last year's tax return with their new address abroad (even though I work independently during gap year) . I never get a residency questionnaire completing secondary but do anyone know what will happen if they determine that I am actually OOS? Do they simply charge me OOS tuition or will revoke an acceptance (if I get one). It's freaking me out!

Residency for acceptance and for tuition are completely different. Did you work for the gap year in WA? If so than you should be IS for both regardless of what your parents did, or at least for acceptance purposes for sure! Where ever you were for the last year is probably the state you should have for residency.

I am working in WA for a NGO with little pay but I thought UW require that I to show I am able to pay the majority of my own expenses for two years in order to be financially independent (which I cannot prove as I still "borrow" from my parents for the majority of the rent) and I was clearly not financially independent last year anyway (when they were already abroad).

I am just going to think in the worst scenarios here. UW is one of my dream schools and I would love to go (even if that means I need to pay OOS tuition). I was digging some past threads and some IS applicants were flagged as OOS and charged OOS tuitions but still matriculated. Do anyone know if that's the case?

They won't take away an acceptance of it is offered provided you didn't lie. If anything, they may charge you OOS tuition if they changed your residency but you could probably fight it by providing the documents they ask for (personal taxes, voter registration, drivers license, proof of employment, etc.). If you were supporting yourself for that time and can provide all the documentation, then they would change you back to IS resident. But again, they wouldn't take away an acceptance. More than likely, if your state of residency is WA on AMCAS and you didn't have to do a residency questionnaire you will be fine.

Just got off the phone with admissions (who were extremely nice and helpful by the way). They said that people who interviewed in November should hear back very soon, but could take another week or so. Thanksgiving messed things up a bit for us.

They said not to worry at all if we don't receive an acceptance right away, apparently the vast majority of students receive the SUC email, so we shouldn't read into it. But they did state that half the class will be filled by the end of December, but some people who interview in Oct/Nov/Dec will be accepted after December, but before they make the alternate list at the end of March.

They said there numerous reasons why an applicant won't get brought up in front of the committee until months later, one example they gave is if the applicants excom member isn't able to make some committee meetings.

The take home message is be patient and don't read into anything.

I wonder if it's the same for those who interviewed in Seattle that week.

It didn't sound like they were giving me information specific to Spokane interviews, but more like November interviewers in general.

Thanks for this information =]

Do you know if the committee discusses all students interviewing in Seattle together, combining in-staters and OORs? Is there a separate process for OOR students and will we be notified in the same manner?

Sorry, I don't have a clue. It seems to me that Washington residents and OOR have the same rolling admissions timeline, but that is just a guess.

From what I know with my class, it seems like we were treated similar during votes. There are OOR people that were accepted at all months.

Hi, sorry if the question has already been asked. I got a letter saying that the school decided to interview me but there was no date given. Did you get the same letter? Did you reply with your available date or wait to hear more from them?

First year here. If anyone has any burning questions about UW or WWAMI I would be happy to answer them. Good luck to all of you in the application cycle!

They usually email you with a date and specifics about 1 month before your actual interview date. I was offered an interview in September of last year, but did not hear about a date until December for a January interview date.

I want a headcount. Haha. Who on here interviewed on 11/14 in Seattle? Like this comment if you were there.
Me! OOR applicant; loved UW and Seattle! Really crossing my fingers that we hear news soon (hopefully good news!!).

MT resident. I was emailed on 9/15 saying I was offered an interview and would be given exact date about 1 month prior to interview. Emailed yesterday scheduling me for the morning of 1/7.

Hi all,

What is the best way to get from UWSOM to SEA-TAC airport? I'm currently looking at Shuttle Express (~$36) and I'm not sure whether this is the best and cheapest method. Any suggestions please? Any one tried to use Uber or any other similar services?

Light rail and bus (pretty much any route from the light rail that is a 70, like 72). You follow the signs at the airport to the light rail station. Get on it and take it to West Lake Station A. From there, get on a 70-something bus. From there, you can take another bus or just walk the 7-9 minute walk to the medical center.

Should cost $5 (I just checked) and takes about the same time as taking a taxi. Here's a good website to plan your trip and what bus you need if you want to go to other places. The trip planner works better on desktop than mobile.

http://metro.kingcounty.gov/trip-planner/

Edit: also download the app OneBusAway to get maps of Seattle with bus locations/stops on it. That'll help you find out where/when to get on/off.
