2014-2015 West Virginia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think lots of us probably have more than one preferred date.
So, while the reservation system is extremely accommodating, it may be even more effective to actively coordinate 1:1 switches.
Good luck everyone!

EDIT: I got switched to my wait-list date this morning.

I got really lucky with my II here. I was scheduled for late October and when I logged back into the interview broker there was an early September opening! Not sure what to expect though. It looks like they only accept like 5% of their OOS interviewees.

I submitted my primary June 4 and I had a secondary from WVUSOM on July 5.

so this question is to any current students that did not have experience working with a rural underserved population. All of my experiences are working with underserved communities in generally larger cities. I am interested in WVU primarily because I do have an interest for serving the underserved and think that obtaining an education that is centered around rural underserved community would be extremely beneficial for me and widen my understanding of the different needs this population face. If asked the question if I would want to practice rural medicine -I honestly don't know because I haven't experienced it yet. Would this be a suitable answer?

Because I am OOS I am worried that my lack of working in rural underserved will make me less appealing to ADCOMs. I have an interview here soon and I wanted to get advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation to me.

Thanks!!!

They really want people who will stay in WVU after graduation; if you look at US News, you'll see breakdowns of how they accept people in terms of IS, OOS, minority, female, if you get the picture, and you'll see that VERY few are accepted-- so I'm not sure if they'll like your background incredibly much unless you can show strong interest in Morgantown and West Virginia in general. For instance, I think about 10 ORM are accepted out of 250+ interviewed every year. To me, these numbers are important because they would really help formulate how I present myself at such an interview.

Just curious, has anyone seen any movement while being waitlisted for an earlier interview date?

I have an interview there, but I'm growing more and more hesitant about going considering the incredibly low acceptance rates for ORM. I hope if there are any WVU admins out there, they can't figure out who I am =0
By ORM, do you mean overrepresented minorities (East and South Asian people) or overrepresented in medicine (East Asian, South Asian, and Caucasian)? Just curious.

I think it's overrepresented minorities (Asians). When I say ORM, I'm just going by the titles US News is using. It's confusing though and my guess is that minorities classifies everyone who doesn't identify as Caucasian when they apply.

Nice! did you receive an e-mail confirmation? How far apart was the original scheduled date and your waitlist date?

I got an email. My original date was scheduled for 10/2 and I moved up to wait listed date for 9/10

I think that answer would be fine. It's honest and that's the most important thing. I doubt they will ask you that, but if they so saying you're interested in rural medicine and looking forward to experiencing it would be a great answer. I would bet way less than half of my class had rural experiences when we applied so don't fret! You're experiences sound really interesting and will catch their eye for sure.

Yes I did from the broker website and it got moved up about 7 weeks from the original date!

I think that this school has an awesome program and based on the previous posts, I was really excited to get a secondary but I wasn't able to submit the secondary on time. I submitted the secondary a couple days later because I really like the school so I was hoping they would still consider me. It's been about a week and I haven't heard anything. 🙁 Am I out of the running? It seems like a lot of people got their II pretty soon after submitting their secondaries.

Oh, and I'm OOS.

It took a little while longer for some ppl when they turned it in late but they still got an II so maybe give it a little more time. Of course this was almost a month ago so idk if that still applies. Good luck to you.

So...on to more important topics...anyone care to talk about football at WVU? I'm super excited to be interviewing at a school that has a football team!!!! All of my previous institutions (undergrad and grad) had no football team and I feel like I missed out big time!

Best part about WVU Med is that the football stadium is on the medical campus, not the undergrad one!!

At my undergrad institution, they had hockey (and almost everyone forgot about games and totally never kept track of if they won), basketball (I think the team was good), a ski team (probably good), and last year I found out we had a volleyball team that apparently is really good.

It will be a brand new experience to be on a campus where people actually care!

I sent my secondary almost a week ago and haven't heard a word of rejection or interview yet 🙁. How long does it usually take? For what I've read for some people it has been as fast as one day or 2 . I don't know if this is unusual or if after a certain period of time one shouldn't be expecting an II. What do you guys think? I have a low 20s mcat and I'm OOS but still received a secondary so I thought it was a good sign.

I'm OOS too and it's been a little more than a week since I submitted my secondary but I haven't heard anything either. I'm not sure my file is complete either because all of the parts are submitted separately. I hope you get an II soon!

Hey guys, would you say that the interview is considered part of the application with regards to the secondary question about the most important aspect of the application? Or do you think they're just referring to components of the AMCAS application?

You guys shouldn't stress too much. The first years just had orientation a few weeks ago and they are probably about to start interviews so it's a busy time. They're probably just a little backed from everything going on.

Finally submitted, hoping for some good news! 🙂

It's crazy how much this application process has altered my top choices. I was initially kind of interested in WVU but leaned more towards the indifferent direction when I added it to my AMCAS. After more research and while completing my secondary, I have absolutely fallen in love with this school.

Anyone else experiencing changes of heart in ranking your choices?

I found myself doing the same. I had to change my choices due to a less than expected MCAT score, but upon research i found i liked my new choices in schools more than my old list and WVU is definitely one of them 🙂

Just got my interview date switched from 11/3 to 9/18 ! :heckyeah:

Congrats! I just got my II today, clicked the link to schedule for next available... it's in January! They filled their interview schedule FAST! Hoping I'll have some luck with the waitlist too!

hey guys so I have a itsy bitsy dilemma that I'm trying to work out before my interview comes. Both my uncle and aunt are faculty at WVU med and have lived in the state for as long as I can remember. I've been there several times for all sorts of things, including my first camping experience (and oh boy was it an experience.) Anyways…when I submitted my application I indicated I have no ties to WV because I wasn't thinking and was trying to get my app out fast (I was nearing the deadline to return.)

My question: when they ask me why WVU or can I see myself here (which I know they will ask) do I mention these things even though i said i have no ties to WV? I'm not a kind of person to name drop or anything so I wouldn't do that, but I would like to at least mention that I do have family here…and they have told me amazing things about the school given they've worked there for a number of years.

I'm sure you can mention those things and it won't look bad. You can tell them you didn't indicate it on the application cuz you forgot (if they ask about that at all.)

Did you get an email saying that you were given your wait listed date or did you have to keep checking? First available date is January 23 :bang:

just got that interview invite today. sucks it's not til January, but im pretty happy with getting it.

Just got done with my interview day. I was greatly impressed by everything about the school. I would be so happy to attend here. Really chill interviewers too. Y'all got this!

I'm really excited for my interview...coming up in two weeks. This has been one of my top choices since I applied, and I'm glad to hear that other people are impressed as well! The chill interviewers is definitely a plus!!

I just had an MMI interview in Chicago and was hoping to have an MMI here too as well, but I guess now I get to see both formats!

Anyone else interviewing on 9/25??

You'll get an email telling you that your date changed. Make sure you're prepared because you can't change it back after that!
