Does anyone know if the 5-year program (MD/MS in Clinical and Translational Science) follows the same tuition as the regular MD program? I know that some schools like Case Western it is tuition free but I am not sure what the deal is with @ Creighton (website keeps producing error pages)

I am not sure, but I would assume it is the same as normal MD students for the 4 years of medical school and normal graduate tuition for the one year of grad school. I have never heard of free tuition for an MD/MS (at any program), only for MD/PhDs.

Maybe Case is the only exception! Thanks for your response

"Generally, two Dean’s fellowships are available for each year. The specific number of students admitted to the program in any given year may vary and is subject to availability of funds. This package includes stipends for Part II and tuition remission for Parts II, III, and IV. Students are responsible for tuition during the first two years of Part I". Part I is "
Two years of science and clinical activities basic to medical practice".

Found this on Creighton's site.

Does anyone know how strict their EC requirements are? I don't have any "non-medical volunteer activities" , so I'm not sure if its worth submitting my secondary

Creighton is really, really big on volunteering, particularly non-medical volunteering. So I think your application might be a little weak when it comes to Creighton SOM.

Creighton is a Jesuit school, so they view non-medical volunteering as one of the more important factors. If you don't have it, it will significantly decrease your chances of acceptance.

what is the typical number of non medical volunteer hours for those with IIs so far and acceptances (in the past) ?

Creighton is really looking for your commitment toward making your community a better place. They aren't interested as much in the hours as in seeing your continuous commitment, week after week, to the community. If you really want to put a number on it, I'd say a few hundred hours.

Someone more knowledgeable of Creighton might want to step in and correct me if I am wrong.

I'm a current M2, and I had about 300 medical volunteering hours and about 200 non-medical hours. Clockwork Biology is right in that the actual numbers aren't as important as showing a consistent commitment to underserved populations.

I'd say as long as you are able to talk about how this service has been meaning to you, it will suffice. I wouldn't think there's really a minimum number of hours. Of course, I don't mean that 3 hours would be fine as long as you feel that the 3 hours were meaningful, but you don't need loads and loads. Basically, I think they're looking for quality over quantity.

My more consistent volunteer commitment has been medically related though, but it is an emergency department in an underserved area. I'm just concerned about the focus on the non-medical volunteer part!

I think they really want non-medical because they want to be sure that the applicant has a real commitment to service and wasn't just looking for clinical experience.

Highly considering adding this school..just on the fence about it. Feel like it's getting a bit late.

Here's what the CUSOM applications page has to say on it:

"In addition, the Committee on Admissions requires applicants to have a foundation in the following activities:
  • Commitment to "service of others" through non-medical volunteer activities
  • Physician shadowing experiences
  • Patient contact through clinical and/or medical experiences
Scientific research, though not required for admission, is also highly valued by the Committee on Admissions"

The school places heavy emphasis on non-medical volunteering. If you'd like to be successful in your application, make sure your profile isn't missing this vital piece.

Oh I have both medical and non-medical, I just like to talk about my medical more since you know...I want to be a doctor 🙂

Appreciate the info!

MSAR says 88% of Creighton's accepted students have non-medical service

I guess I should've looked into this more. I have 28 hours volunteering as a youth soccer coach, but that's it in the non-medical category 🙁.

However, if ~10% are getting in without it, then I guess there is still reason to hope.

Don't freak out about medical vs non medical and number of hours. If you like the school, then apply. There are lots of people in my class that didn't have much volunteering.

Finally decided to submit my primary here. Secondary received this morning!

Does going to their open house help you get an interview?
I don't think it would hurt but depending on where you are, I don't think it would have much of an impact so depends on if you want to spend the travel money or not. I think what would help is calling in on their open door thursdays to talk to either Dr. Quinn or the director of admissions- Garland Jarmon. I did that a couple times last year and received an II. Was waitlisted and they didn't take anyone off the list but I think the calls helped.

Finally decided to add Creighton, hopefully it is not too late.

I received the e-mail stating I was complete on 9/02. Hoping for some Jesuit love!

Can any current students or people familiar with the area recommend some places to eat or things to do?

I live in Omaha, the school is located super close to the downtown (Old market)area which is always popping from thurs-sun. There are also plenty of hotels there that you can book (they are a little expensive though). There's plenty of bars and a variety of restaurants from sushi to Italian to Mexican food. Be sure to check out the old market and feel free to walk around (parking can sometimes suck as well if you arrive there after 8pm).

For places to eat, as was already said, the Old Market is great. It's very close to Creighton's campus and has some pretty good places to eat. Blue Sushi is extremely popular if you like sushi. There's also Twisted Fork, Upstream, and M's Pub in the Old Market that are pretty good and not too crazily expensive. Roja has some good Mexican food and really good margaritas.

As far as things to do, just walking around the Old Market is fun. If you want more structured things to do, the Durham Western Heritage Museum is very close to the Old Market, and it always has cool exhibits. There are also plenty of music venues around if you like that sort of thing. I know this might not be best for a person who is probably spending all their money on application-related expenses, but there are casinos just across the Missouri River in Iowa. It's about a 10 minute drive from Creighton. Even if you don't want to gamble, though, the casinos have good restaurants. Another thing that I like to do is walk across the pedestrian bridge that goes over the Missouri River.

Thanks for the advice, nwts and medschoolboy!! I spent the last couple of hours just walking around Omaha, and it's been great. Anybody that is hesitant about Omaha, should definitely give it a chance before writing it off. I've been very pleasantly surprised!

There mission statement doesn't really have much too it..

In the Jesuit, Catholic tradition of Creighton University, the mission of the School of Medicine is to improve the human condition with a diverse body of students, faculty, and staff who provide excellence in educating students, physicians and the public, advancing knowledge, and providing comprehensive patient care.

Is it possible for the how do you fit the mission essay you can just talk about how you are a diverse student and will bring that diversity to the profession later on as well?

That's actually exactly what I did, haha 🙂

I had a problem a few weeks ago where the system glitched and told me that I was still missing application materials. Lady on the phone said "sorry about that, I have made it so we can now see everything...you haven't missed anything and your application will still be reviewed for our second round of interview invites at the end of September." I haven't researched past trends with Creighton and I haven't been following this thread too closely but just wanted to let everyone know that I think there's still a few weeks to go before interview invites, for those getting anxious.

I was complete last week, do you know if this also applies to me or will I have to wait until October's II?

So Creighton sends out one batch of II's per month? Is that sort of what I am hearing?

Yeah, they do. But they haven't sent out any IIs since early August, so we are already more than a month out and I guess we still have to wait a few more weeks

Does anybody happen to know the interview/acceptance rate here?

Also, how were the interviews for those that interviewed last week?!?🙂

They were good! Really conversational and everybody did their best to make the interviewees comfortable. Omaha surprised me too. Overall it was great interview experience and there really is nothing to be worried about

Good to hear! I'm excited for my interview there on the 26th 🙂

just to double check, if using an abbreviation for the name in the secondary...would it be CUSM? Or do they not really use that?
