2015-2016 Emory University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm sure Emory knows what they're doing but with a 30th percentile MCAT score I'd think you'd be at risk of failing step 1 in the future. Props to you and I know stats aren't everything but I have no doubt that there are more academically qualified applicants who did not get accepted let alone been invited to interview.

:lame:
Congratulation King Kunta!

Let's not be so conceited though... EVERYONE is at risk of failing step 1 in the future. Maybe there's a special circumstance that prevented KingKunta from studying sufficiently for the exam. I'm sure Emory looked at his entire background and deemed him qualified enough not only to invite for an interview but to offer him acceptance. Don't take your frustration over this arduous application cycle out on a fellow future medical student!

Aye well I am a urm but I read an article the other day that said med schools don't look at that much anymore

While everyone is at risk of failing step 1, there have been studies showing that mcat is a reasonable indicator of step 1 scores (If memory serves me right, it's true for mcat scores up to 27, after which there appears to be little improvement of step score relative to mcat score). That said, I agree wholeheartedly with the notion that Emory looked at everything and liked what they saw (plus, I'm sure they've got the resources in place to ensure their students' success). Congrats Kunta, Emory is awesome and they pick wisely, you rock star!

Yes my stats are below average for this school and it was definitely a reach but i'm pretty sure i nailed my interview

Congrats! Looks like you have enjoyed multiple acceptances.

What specifically about you do you think sold adcoms that you are a good bet for med school? What do you think would be their explanations for why they accepted you beyond URM status?

Yo what I'm saying is I don't think URM status had anything to do with it I think they just read my personal statement and said dang this kids dope

So what specifically about your personal statement? Most folks think their PS is "dope" and almost no one believes that a PS by itself could overcome a 3.2/22.

And have all of your acceptances come in the last 24 hours since you joined SDN yesterday?

You wouldn't happen to know a guy named Womb Raider, would you?

Yeah... that dude is a troll. Emory openly writes on their FAQ that they do not allow people with lower than a 27 on the MCAT to complete a secondary.

And now back to our regularly scheduled postings.

Yeahhhhhhhh :troll:

3.2/22 is low for DO standards, let alone upper tier MD. I have complete confidence that this guy is full of it.

I heard Emory does a "group interview." Can someone who has gone through it touch on that?

I found it to be a pleasant interview. It is you and two other applicants with 3 interviewers. I did not feel like it was a competition at all between applicants because they directed questions to each person individually. Felt more like they were looking for a more time efficient way to interview more applicants. Overall I found it nice 🙂

Cool! I have only had super traditional interviews so far so I am nervous/excited for this one.

FWIW I had a friend who interviewed there and said it was the most intimidating one he went to. I guess it really depends on the day and who you ask.

Has anyone that has heard nothing but silence called to check on the status of their app?

Their admissions office is probably the best I have interacted with. They are very pleasant and helpful!

Has anyone who'd been continued/passed over on acceptance days been admitted on later acceptance days?

Congrats to those who have been accepted and have been invited for an interview! Do you guys mind sharing your stats?

Still waiting to hear back from my interview, but I received a II with a 3.45 GPA and 34 MCAT. Huge upward trend in my GPA, don't know how much that affected their decision to invite me to interview

thanks for sharing! could I ask if you're IS or OS and if you're URM?

Also still waiting to hear back after interview but I had a 3.5 GPA, 511 MCAT (31-32?), IS, not URM!

Edit: if you're surprised that I got an interview with those stats, believe me, so was I.

Congrats! My stats are similar but OS; Emory is one of my top choices and I love Altanta. Will be applying next cycle and wish I get an invite too!

Finished secondary in September. Submitted a little later than I would have liked due to finances but still hoping for an interview invitation. Wondering if I should just give up hope.
