2015-2016 Georgetown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I booked an interview for January 6th. This is also the first week of my quarter so in an effort to minimize how many classes I have to miss I booked a flight out of Dulles at 6:55pm. Does this seem doable if I am done with my interview by 3? I plan to leave directly from my interview in a cab or Uber.

You should have more than enough time!

This may have already been commented on but I cannot find it - Can any current students or anyone that knows talk about the atmosphere at Georgetown? I have heard mixed things on whether the H/HP/P/F grading system breeds competition vs collaboration in the preclinical years. Also if you would be willing to talk about what an average day looks like in 1st/2nd year in terms of lecture etc it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey, so I am an undergrad senior at Georgetown right now, but will be attending the medical school next year. So far from all the info sessions we have had and having spoken to a few current med students, it seems that they are scrapping the H/HP/P/F system of grading and going to just a Pass Fail system for classes. The reasoning behind it is that apparently schools that do Pass Fail tend to do the same on board exams while students also feel less stress/competition. There are a few more changes to the program during preclinical years but that is one of the biggest ones. I don't think they have hashed out the details about it completely yet, but all I know is it is supposed to start with the next incoming class.

In terms of atmosphere at Georgetown, collaboration is definitely much more present than competition. Again, all the med students I have talked to so far have said that Georgetown seems to specifically choose the type of students who are more likely to get along well as a class rather than those who may be more concerned about outperforming others. And this is definitely a vibe I have had in my undergrad years at well. Basically the student body is super friendly and everyone gets along pretty well 🙂

No idea about average day during preclinical years though!

While they interview 1100 and make 350 offers but your odds are much better than 350/1100. Most of the 1100 will receive offers at other schools and most of these offers will be less expensive options. So now GT waits for the waitlist to dwindle down as students withdraw to those who really want to attend GT, have no other option, or no better option. Same thing happens at all schools. So the real number may be 350/500-600 get in for those who stay on the waitlist. 60% odds ain't bad.

Just returned from my interview here and I am in love with this school. It has to be good luck to have an interview at a Catholic school on the day of epiphany, right?🙂

Has anybody heard back w/good news lately or contact admissions re: when they'll update us?

I had my interview the first week of December and Mrs. Sullivan said that the committee wasn't meeting again until some point in January and that most decisions would most likely be in February

Anyone who interviewed in November still waiting to hear? I interviewed 11/16/15 and am still waiting.

Congrats! That's a pretty big deal for how many applicants they get!

Hey, thank you so much! I don't think I'm going to go to Georgetown though... so maybe one of you will get my spot when it opens up.

Even though I don't think I'm going there, it's obviously a terrific school in a great location.

Best of luck!

Accepted yesterday. Does anyone know if they give out merit scholarships and, if so, when?

any ideas on when we will get more info from GT on finaid/housing/etc ?

Nope all finaid is need based only, unless you do the military scholarships/primary care scholarships.

Finaid information for 2016 is up already: https://som.georgetown.edu/prospectivestudents/financialaid/apply

Housing information comes out later in the spring I heard. There will be a facebook group made for our year where people usually look for housing opportunities.

Anyone know where most of the medical students live?
I'm thinking of finding a place around Dupont Circle, since there is a free shuttle from there to the Hospital and some bus routes as well (D2 and D6).
Georgetown isn't near a metro though :-(

I feel like the student who did our tour said there is a shuttle to the metro as well so you could live in a area with cheaper rent and still make it in relatively easy.

I am an MD/PhD applicant and will be having an interview next week at Georgetown.
How are the interviews like? and Is it possible to get accepted for MD only and not the dual MD-PhD?

how early do people begin to get off the waitlist? waitlisted this morning, interviewed early december

Do they call for waitlists as well or is it just for acceptances?

accepted students--- did you receive anything in the mail after your call/email? thanks

Waitlisted in the first week of Feb, interviewed in early Dec. Sorry for the late report and now need to send in the letter 😛

Anyone know if there's a FB group or something for accepted students?
