2015-2016 New York Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just want to make sure I'm doing this correctly. Let's say that one of my letter writers was the prof of a class BIOCORE 384 Cellular Biology. Would BIOCORE 384 be the course number? And Cell Bio be the Course Name? Or would the course name be BIOCORE and the course number be 384? HELP

I started out doing the latter, but ended up doing the former (e.g. BIOCORE 384 as course number). I'm hoping it's just so they have more context and can match the letters they receive to your application, so it shouldn't be too big of a deal.

Hi! Just figured out how to check the status of the secondary, but it only says that a unique login was created. Is there anything you did when you got to the payment page to submit the secondary, or did you just click exit? This one is by far the weirdest secondary I have received thus far!

That's the exact same thing I did! I entered all the info and then once I got to the payment information screen, I separately emailed them about my fee waiver and then just clicked "exit." When I click check status, it says that my fee waiver was approved but it doesn't say that my secondary was received and instead just says the unique login stuff. I'm really confused and I'm not sure whether my application was actually submitted or not.

I don't know if this counts as submitting, but I did everything in the secondary (there was no submit button, so I couldn't really submit) and emailed them about my fee waiver as per their instructions. I haven't gotten anything else from them, but I just checked and I can't log into the page anymore. Using the "forgot password" link produces "Unable to send your Password via e-mail at this time. Please try again."

I get the same error. I emailed them about my fee waiver yesterday, but hadn't completed the Letters of Evaluation section yet, so hopefully they didn't think I wanted to submit...

I just emailed them about this problem, though. I'll update as I hear back.

Great, I was about to email them but I'm glad someone else took initiative. Don't want to bombard them with emails.

The instructions say they will review before they get the scores! So you should be okay.

Awesome, thanks! Got the secondary today and submitted. I registered for CASPer for 7/15. 😀

I'm sorry, I don't know. I paid using paypal. I'd think they would confirm your submission when they email you back about FAP.
when i click on enter payment details, the button changes to "taking your to paypal" but nothing happens. did you have that issue

anyone else think the character limit for evaluator title is way too short?

?

does anyone know if NYMC is still homophobic? I was doing research into the school and saw that they were not very accepting of an lgbt group back in 2005, but is that still the case? i have an lgbt activity on my amcas primary, so will this hurt my chances? too bad i already paid the secondary fee oops

did not know that. i googled it and also found this
https://www.nymc.edu/StudentServices/StudentClubsAndOrganizations/CultureAndIdentity.html
search for
P.E.O.P.L.E.
on that link

i know the group exists, but a group like that could still exist despite distaste from adcom members and faculty/administration.

I just sent them an email with the appropriate subject and included my name and AMCAS ID #. I also attached a pdf of the letter informing me that I qualified for FAP. You can get the letter here: https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/fap/. I hope this works for them.

I sent them this email today, but I don't plan to submit my secondary until I hear back from them on some questions I emailed them about, so hopefully it'll be ok.
Sorry but how did you get a pdf of the letter? I logged into my account and can see the letter but cant save it as a pdf

It's not an option on the website. On my Mac, I use Open PDF in Preview Option from the print menu. Windows should have a similar option.

I think I figured this out - if you already submitted and tried logging in again using the link sent to you via e-mail (with the word "code" in the url), the system won't let you log in. To log back in, you need to go to https://www.nymc.edu/Medadmission/default.aspx

Not working for me...

What do you mean by submitted? I already emailed them my fee waiver, but I didn't click "submit" in the application yet. I just figured I might as well get the payment out of the way. Does emailing them the fee waiver mean that I intended to submit???

I didn't qualify for the fee waiver, so I just went through the steps in the portal and that's that.

When you check your status does it say anything other than info was submitted to you for login name.. etc. Does it say something under secondary such as "submitted"?
Also, I pasted the wrong link, will update my previous post. Try https://www.nymc.edu/Medadmission/default.aspx?Choice=AS
No, nothing else other than "A unique LOGIN ID and PASSWORD was sent to the email address..." appears under "SECONDARY APPLICATION." I'm assuming it takes a while for them to process submissions - under "LETTERS OF EVALUATION" it says "In order to view your received evaluations your secondary application must first be processed by the Admissions Office."

Oh ok, that one just takes me to the application status page, where it all shows up with confirmation of everything being paid and what not. Maybe after you submit that is the only page you can get into?

Yes, I think that is the case. Maybe after they process the secondary, something else will appear under that section, and the same for letters?

You are a genius. One of the most primitive web sites of all the Med Schools. Can't save as you go to come back and review before submitting. The status page is more like a UNIX data dump.

Ok, I'm now able to log in using the above link, but it won't let me go back to edit any part of my secondary! I never clicked a "SUBMIT" button or anything like that within the secondary. I did, however, send in my fee waiver as part of my payment, because I figured I might as well get that part out of the way. Is there any way I can go back and make changes to the Letters of Evaluation page? I didn't even get to enter my letters. 🙁

Sorry to hear that. If the person that designed that site had any knowledge of Web page design it would have been nice.

So sorry 🙁 I think if you email them and explain the issue they'll be understanding... or at least I hope they are. Their application portal is a mess.

I've emailed them, but I don't expect to hear back until at least Monday. I'll update this thread once I hear back in case there is anyone else out there with the same issue.

Anyway, I've registered to take the CASPer exam on Wednesday at 2 PM EST!

are you guys gonna prepare or "study" for this in anyway?

There's a sample CASPer test you can take on the CASPer website. I haven't done it yet, but will definitely do it before my actual assessment. Does anyone have advice for this assessment? Doesn't seem like there is much you can do to prepare for it, at least as far as I can tell from the description.

I took the Casper test last year for McMaster. I am not sure if the format is the same, but for McMaster we had 5 minutes to answer 2-3 questions. If it is the same for this, the major tip would be to TYPE FAST! The second one would be to be precise, you won't have time to write everything you want to, and its better to be precise than to write an incomplete answer without a conclusion. Do the practice Casper tests and ask others (friends, family) to mark you, they dont have to be in medicine to judge your answers. Good luck everyone, I am writing on July 15 8 PM! 🙂

So I just got this secondary, and the letter requirements read:

"Graduate School Letters of Evaluation

If you have completed or are currently pursuing a graduate degree, in addition to the undergraduate letters outlined above the following graduate letters of evaluation are required:

  • One (1) letter of evaluation is required either from the Premedical Advisory Committee of your graduate program or an individual faculty member in your graduate department who has either taught you in a graduate class or supervised independent research for which you received graduate credit. A letter from a graduate science faculty member can substitute for one (1) undergraduate science letter.
  • If you have just begun a graduate program in Summer/Fall 2014, one (1) letter of evaluation from faculty in your graduate department is required upon completion of your first semester. This requirement also applies if you are enrolled in non-degree granting graduate program."
I started my graduate program in the Fall of 2014, so I am required to provide 1 letter of revaluation from faculty in my graduate department.

However, seeing as I did not know about this requirement when I submitted my primary application, I only submitted my undergraduate committee letter. Can I still update letters on my primary application, or do I have to do something else to submit this new letter for my secondaries that require it?

Thanks!

***EDIT****

Just saw this part,
"If your graduate studies begin in Summer/Fall 2014, upon completion of your first semester, a letter of evaluation is required from a faculty member in your graduate program. This letter may be submitted via the AMCAS Letter Service – OR – the letter writer may submit it directly via email to [email protected]. In order for you to proceed with the completion of the Secondary Application, information pertaining to this specific graduate letter of evaluation should be entered on the on-line application as follows:"

So I guess I can just have them email it?

Though I still am wondering if I can update my LORs on AMCAS

anyone decided to not go ahead and apply to NYMC after seeing the crazy $140 cost to apply w/ CASPer?

Soo.. similar to questions asked before: I have a committee letter, but also a packet of letters. Should I just fill out the first LOR part with my undergrad's name, or fill out the individual LOR part, or both..?

:hello:

In reality it just helped me step back and think through other factors and come to the conclusion that this school isn't for me.

I'm confused, so will admissions be able to review our secondary and perhaps invite us for an interview before we even register/take the CASper test?

I'm wondering this too! I work 50 hrs/ week so I can't take it until August!! I hope this doesn't push my application back and hurt my chances for an interview! :scared:

Just to clarify, has anyone received ANY confirmation email or payment receipt email after "submitting" their secondary? Just seeing if we're all in the same boat :<

From reading this thread...this application process looks like a giant clusterf*ck thus far.

With that being said...can't wait to receive my secondary and hop in on the madness 😛 Good luck to all.

I received the secondary, but I won't get verified until Monday. Is it okay to submit the secondary before getting verified?

It probably is, but from what I've heard it wouldn't make a big difference if you submit before or after being verified. They probably wouldn't process your application until you're verified anyway.

I think as long as the school already has your AAMC ID on file, it should be fine since they'll just sort all the paperwork to your ID.

Submitted, but when I check the status it does not say I have. I guess I will recheck later.

Also, that secondary was almost literally nothing. I have a committee for letters from my school, so I didn't have to put down any names. There's not even a spot for you to update the school on your gap year plans; do you think we'll be able to do this at some point?

I don't think anyone has a status that shows that they've submitted.

I emailed NYMC asking if my secondary application was submitted, considering that they got my fee waiver but the status under Secondary Application hasn't changed and that I can't log into the secondary anymore. I'll let you guys know when they get back to me.

Next think you know all medical schools are going to require this test and its going to be like the second MCAT. Then what? We are going to have to submit how many push ups we can do?

I think I am a bit secondaried out...
Just wait until test prep companies start selling books for how to do well on CASPer. It's a stupid idea IMO. Obviously with the stakes there is going to be a strong social desirability bias in the answers.

So they won't invite you for interviews until they get CASPer scores right? What if you can't take it till August? Will that delay interviews? When do schools usually have interviews? Thanks guys

For Casper, it should just have a green box above your name on the profile page that says verified account to allow you to take the exam right?
