2015-2016 Rush Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, second-look day confirmed that I would sell my soul to get off the waitlist here. Rush Medical Center has been a big part of my family for many years now and to go here would be everything I have ever wanted. Praying for waitlist movement!

Good for me as well. Some students seem nice, some seem pretentious. But the other second look I've been to before also had pretentiousness. One thing I noticed about rush was a HUGE amount of Notre dame students, the demographic shows it too lol.

But the numbers though... 120+ waitlisted and a current class of 200+ for a class of around 120. Jill seemed optimistic when she said she moved as many people as she claimed lol. I guess we'll see, it was a really fun experience.

I was surprised by the huge numbers of Notre Dame students as well. But that might have less to do with the college and more to do with the fact that Chicago sends a lot of qualified students to Notre Dame.

Any other thoughts on second look? I wasn't able to make and would love to hear your opinion on Rush, the students, etc.
TLDR for what I got out of the day:

Faculty is extremely accessible and down to earth. Lots of students just cold email them for research or other opportunities, and the faculty tend to work well with students.

It's not cheap, especially housing. They don't have student housing anymore. There are contracted agencies to help with finding apartments, however.

No one goes to class. 90% of the M1s I spoke to just study lectures on their own time.

Good cohesion among the M1 class, most people know each other. Also M2s pass a lot of resources via drop box to the M1s.

I overall enjoyed it. It helped that it was 65 and sunny outside, my interview day it was like 20 and snowing lol.

Thanks! That's too bad about housing. Did you get the sense the school was going to help people find roommates or is it now a fend for yourself kind of thing?

I was struck by how much the students absolutely love Rush. You could just tell that they are extremely happy to be there. At other schools where I interviewed, I got a vibe from the students that they went there because they got in or because it "gets the job done." Not so with Rush, at least for the students I talked to.

You get the sense that it's a very cohesive environment and the students like to help each other out. One of the M1s showed me a group chat that their entire class of 128 people is on.

As corny as this sounds, it does seem like it's one big family. I was able to walk right up to the President of Rush and have a long conversation with him. A lot of the higher-ups from the university/medical center administration were present at both my interview and second-look day, in fact.

They have a very defined commitment to the Chicago community, which is really appealing to me as someone who wants to be a physician in the Chicago community. There was an entire exhibit on all of their outreach opportunities, which far outnumber any other school that I interviewed with, or that I even know of.

The director of admissions is absolutely wonderful; I'm on the waitlist and she conducted an entire session devoted to updates on the waitlist, she made everything extremely transparent and answered everybody's questions completely honestly.

Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with the school and if I were to get in off the waitlist it would be the happiest day of my entire life.

Thanks so much for your detailed response. As someone from Chicago with similar goals, I really hope you get in dude. Chicago needs all the committed docs it can get.

Would you be able to give a quick summary of what the director of admissions said about the waitlist in her session? Any info would be appreciated!

I know. I was devastated when I got waitlisted--I really want to go here. On the subject, is anybody on the "priority waitlist?" I've heard that term thrown around but there was no mention of it on second look day.
Actually I am on the priority waitlist. Still a little unclear on the details but the email I got when they informed me seemed optimistic. And I feel the same way about Rush, it has pretty much everything I value in a med school

pretty sure there is no priority waitlist. they specifically said they dont rank their waitlist...and they haven't yet re-reviewed waitlist applicants

Any other accepted students still not have their financial aid listed on their portal? Hard to decide between schools when they don't have anything listed for it.

That's what confused me, they specifically said that they don't rank it and that your position is fluid depending on the circumstances...when I heard people talking about a priority waitlist I didn't know what to make of it.

where did you hear people talking about it? and was it specifically about rush or another school?

Sorry but I don't think I should. I'm not sure how public she wants that information to be.

Did she say not to repeat it? Because otherwise, considering the information was presented to a room full of waitlisted students, you can already consider it as public knowledge.

So apparently although I included my parents previous years tax information, since they didn't file last years taxes at the time I filled it out my FAFSA, Rush hasn't done my financial aid package. So now I have to go back and update my FAFSA in order for Rush to do my package. Yippee!

I'm in a very similar boat. I don't understand why I can't at least get part of my financial aid package without my parent's updated 2015 tax information. And what part of my parents will not be paying for any of my medical school tuition do they not understand?

Also, I was told that need based aid was given on a first come first serve basis so I'm thinking we're at the end of the list now.🤔

Yep I was fairly frustrated when I got their reply. My parents tax information shouldn't matter since they won't be paying for jack squat, but alas, that won't change.
Would the loan information essentially be the same as at other schools?

I'm guessing if you received a financial aid package from another program with similar cost of tuition, it would be very similar minus any need based aid which could change if they have run out of those funds at Rush.

Another waitlisted person at Rush asked me if I was on the regular or priority waitlist--this was the first I had heard of it. and I guess @elephant18 is on the priority waitlist.
Super skeptical about this. I doubt Jill would keep us in the dark about this, and I see no reason why she would. If there is indeed a priority waitlist, I'd be kind of miffed for having been given false hope.

Agreed. That would be a pretty glaring omission from the second look waitlist presentation. Perhaps they changed their waitlist letter or something? Mine specifically mentions a class of 128 even though I know that the class will be 136...

Email said 136 for me regarding the waitlist update email.

The plot thickens.
"As promised, I am writing to update you on the status of our current entering class. At this time, our interview season has concluded and Rush Medical College is holding firm with a class size larger than our matriculating class of 136. In preparation for the AAMC multiple acceptance deadline on April 30th, we would like to begin reviewing the application files of our current waitlist applicants in anticipation we will need to make an admission offer(s) in the months to come."

^Not this?

Oh no I was referring to the email I got when I was actually waitlisted.

After careful review of your application to Rush Medical College, the Committee on Admissions would like to extend to you an offer for a position on our 2016 waitlist.

In keeping with both national and institutional statistics, Rush will extend approximately 250 offers of admission to fill our 128 first-year positions, including offers to our waitlist applicants. We realize this is a stressful time and will continue to communicate with you as the recruitment season progresses and we receive further word from the Committee on Admissions regarding your status.

Ok. Phew. We got the same thing then.

Feel the same way, especially since she mentioned so much to us that day. I highly doubt there is a priority waitlist.

I wasn't able to make it to second look but am currently waitlisted. What did she say about the waitlist?

Every time I get an email from Rush my heart jumps but I am very appreciative of the updates that Jill gives us. Rush is miles ahead of every other admissions office I've dealt with this year in terms of respect and transparency for their applicants.

Does anyone know if there is a deadline to accept/reject your financial aid package?

Did anyone else have to submit W2's for each employer in 2015 for themselves and their parents? Rush really makes you jump through hoops for that fin aid.

Yeh, their fin aid process is mindblowingly obnoxious.

I know that Rush has a honors/pass/fail grade system, but does anyone know if they internally rank or how they report your relative performance in residency letters?

Every time I get an email from Rush my heart leaves my body and dances around. There is no possible way I could ever put into words how desperately I want to go to this school.

Hi all Waitlisters. I could be completely off, but the accepted students FB group isn't even close to full. So either some of incoming M1s don't have facebook, don't want to join the accepted students group, or there might be a little room in our class. I just thought I'd throw up this tid bit out there since information is pretty scarce these days.

Good luck guys. Hang in there.
I noticed that but Jill Volk said in the email just now that they are "nearing the matriculation size of 136." I'm not sure I like our odds.
