2015-2016 Stanford University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To answer your question, I think someone who gets a Rhodes-like scholar should've probably taken a gap year for several reasons. But I couldn't say whether schools discriminate against students that have indication that they wont attend for a whole year.

It was unknown whether you won a Rhodes until November 20th. Expecting aspiring doctors to take a gap year just because they apply to Rhodes--even though there is no guarantee (and in fact a very low chance) they will win--makes no sense. If one won a Rhodes the medical school will eat that up and I would expect it to do nothing but help ones chances.

Interviewing at Stanford on the 2nd! Any idea if interviews this late are only for the waitlist? I know it doesn't make a difference now, but this would just calm my mind a bit!

So Stanford MMI has 8-10 stations, each of which is 10 minutes.
Are rest station and the 18min "traditional-interview style" station part of 8-10 stations?
Also, does Stanford have practice questions? I know some schools make those available to students....

So scared for this interview, yikes.

I have heard a lot of people talk about other schools' MMI interview days as being surprisingly "fun", but have never heard this about Stanford. Maybe they're all just sworn to secrecy about it?

Answering multiple questions here:

There is no indication an interview now is "only for the waitlist." Anyone who is interviewing now is eligible for a good result...look at how many people have been rejected or waitlisted already before you.

We don't know how many accepted thus far. However, since it is the 13th day coming up and Stanford accepts 40% after interview, you can try to guess but I don't see how this helps at all for your mental health

The rest station and traditional interview are part of the rotation. I cannot say how many total stations it is in total since that's violation of NDA.

However the NDA does not preclude my personal opinion that the MMI can be considered "fun." Whether it actually feels fun depends on how one thinks they did. If someone thinks they blew it, doesn't matter if the hundreds of others said it was fun. lol

Personally, I enjoy MMIs and I don't believe the Stanford interview is particularly stressful (eg. Some schools sound much more intense).

On one hand, I'd be very excited to receive an II here.

On the other hand, I quite dislike MMI's.

I'd obviously suck it up and go lol, but I'd be very "ughhh" about it.

II this morning for 2/19!! I was told on the phone by the dean that the next few interview days after 1/23 are 2/6, 2/10, and 2/19 if that's helpful to anyone!

I'm assuming you mean February 2nd. Is this correct?

I'm interviewing on 1/28/16!
Coming from SoCal. Anybody down to carpool?
Plane tickets are so expensive. I might have to cancel if I don't find a cheaper way to travel.

There is some (unintended i'm sure) misinformation being spread around here (not implicating anyone of course). According to @avgn 's post, there's 16 interview days with 1/23 being the 12th leaving only four more (13, 14, 15 and 16). According to @ceewhytee 's post, day 13/14/15 could correspond to 2/6, 2/10, and 2/19. That would leave one day left for day 16. However if @hopeful.in.hawaii and @JessebenBenjamin are interviewing 1/28 and 2/2 respectively, then that would give a total of 17 days which is more than avgn says. Finally this is also inconsistent with their website and completion email which both state that they interview through april.

I asked if my interview date could be pushed, and they said they only had February left. (No mention of March or April).

Good post. The official website and email are definitely wrong; the new dean of admissions changed the entire process. I also gave the head interview guy a phone call (he calls the night before an interview to confirm attendance so I have his cell) and he confirmed that February is it for interviews. I did not inquire how many total days again but on my day he clearly said 16. All that's left to know is the specific days that remain.

Where did you see Stanford accepts 40% post interview?

I believe 40% is just a generous assumption taking previous years' records into consideration. Its probably below that. Acceptance percentages vary for every interview day.

It's not over till it's over. Let the waiting game continue.. Haha

It is not a "generous assumption." I am not making wild guesses. It is from US News premium subscription. Every single school's post-II acceptance rate is on there. The actual figure is not a flat 40%, but it is in the ballpark and I don't think saying the true percentage publicly is allowed on SDN since it is privileged information. However, this 40% is overstated since it includes all acceptances off the WL, so immediate acceptances after interview is going to be a lower figure, depending on how many WL offers are given in a certain cycle

I was complete at the end of July.
+1

I can't help but feel excited that i've survived this many rounds of rejections and think that it must mean something positive. But then i tell myself that this process literally has no rhyme or reason or logical flow and that, for all i know, the person in charge of reviewing my application is on sabbatical and won't return until after all the interview spots are gone.

Same, complete July. Good luck everyone, hope it works out if you haven't heard yet!

Rejected! Complete sometime in July. Bay Area, you have been good to me. It's time to say goodbye.

@justadream Nothing like a rejection at 7 am PST on a Saturday to get your weekend going the right way!

Actually, it doesn't really sting. It's nice to see this process winding down so I can start making plans for the next few months.

That's what I was thinking. Another possibility would be to train + bus it. Would probably take me like 14+ hours though.
take the flight, you don't want to exhaust yourself on interview day due to uneasy transpo.

So what are some prominent health care issues in California right now?
I know PAD just recently been legalized...

Call me ignorant but never lived in the states, so yeah...

I'm not from Cali, but off the top of my head, a few interesting things are it's recent extension of healthcare coverage to undocumented immigrants, the recent legalization of physician assisted suicide, and a rekindled debate over it's surrogacy laws.

Lol.

Thanks a lot Cerebral_Policy!! 🙂

On the other note, what's the dress code for the dinner the night before interview day?

No problem.

Unfortunately, I can't help you with the second part since I haven't actually interviewed there. Haha. Still patiently waiting for them to reject me...

You're meeting students, nobody gives a ****. People were in flip flops so do whatever

R-r-rejected, complete since late July. No hard feelings, but sad that NorCal's now out of the running for me!

Anyone else have a missing withdraw button on the portal? I have had nothing but silence since being completed in late summer 2015...

I've heard nothing, but I do have a withdraw tab.

I've heard nothing, but I do have a withdraw tab.

I know this is paranoiac thinking, but did anyone who received interviews or rejections notice a missing withdraw button before decisions?

When did people find out which group they interview with? Trying to figure out what time I need to be on campus....

I received an email with what group I was in exactly one week prior to the interview day. Plan for being in either time slot (early morning to earlier afternoon, or late morning to early evening)!

Welp. my withdraw tab is gone. Let's see what comes from this.. haha

For what it's worth, I haven't heard anything and my withdraw tab is still there.
