2015-2016 Stanford University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
One pub, even first-author doesn't make or break. I forgot about the no pre-II updates, thanks. In this case, I'd wait 2 more weeks then as you surmise. Don't worry about the stupid 2-week secondary rule that people sell...it's not a real rule lmao. As soon as the publishing schedule deviates from what you think it is, submit! You don't wanna wait at the mercy of the journal for your application.

I think you are right. Thanks!

Rejected this morning, submitted the 23rd. Good luck to everyone else!

🙁 Did your status in the portal change?

Makes me super nervous that more are coming soon...
It can't be the portal. The portal says very clearly it's either snail mail or email. I assume he/she got it via email

Yes, email.
Sorry to hear that! That's a pretty fast turnaround if you submitted 7/23. Stanford must review apps in random order. Do you mind sharing your stats and tier of ECs?

Good luck with the rest of your applications!

If I never turned in a secondary, would I still be a re-applicant? Just wondering just in case!

From Stanford's secondary:
"Are you a re-applicant to the Stanford University School of Medicine? Note: Applicants who withdraw prior to the AMCAS verification process are not considered re-applicants."

So yes, if you got a secondary, that means you were verified, and you will be considered a re-applicant.

Thanks!!I saw that, was just hoping....sigh

Thanks! LizzyM 76 and...I guess above average ECs? My activities are community service centered.

Circulation is big, so congrats! But don't expect people outside of cards to necessarily know how it compares to JACC, Heart, etc. (Actually, the newest IFs show that JACC>Circulation, but those who work in cards know that's BS.) However, accepted pending revisions is NOT a guarantee of acceptance, so you should put it but be clear about its status. No need to wait because it's not make or break.

Overall, though, you'll be complete in mid-Sept after your MCAT scores are in, which is late, but not killer. Are you applying to other U.S. schools? If you're planning on filling out AMCAS anyway, sure, add Stanford and see what happens. If you're considering filling out that entire monster just for Stanford, only do it if you have the time to spare. More important is to really do well on your MCAT so your late application will catch people's eyes. It's tough, I know, but those are your options!

Thanks for the reply, and sorry for not responding sooner (been really swamped with MCAT). I know publications are valued as they 'prove' your research has been productive, but do you know if undergraduate research grants/awards are viewed similarly? I've been fortunate enough to receive ~$48,000 in competitive research funding/grants/ studentships/ awards. Not sure how much name matters, but several of these awards have been from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, which is similar to NIH (albeit not healthcare oriented). Also not sure how common these things are in the U.S/ whether or not they would set me apart in any meaningful manner.

I was also intending to only apply to Stanford as I wasn't really sure where else I should apply to in the states. Cheers!

Dude/dudette, you're a rockstar and quite definitely in the top 1% research wise. I have no doubt that a $48k grant as an undergrad from a national organization for research will be looked upon VERY favorably.

Agreed. But masks sure the money you cite was actually yours, not some grant you wrote for your PI

10. What do you see as the most likely practice scenario for your future medical career?
Choose the single answer that best describes your career goals and clinical practice setting:
Private Practice
Academic Medicine
Health Policy/Administration
Primary Care
Public Health

Into which category would "working in a hospital as a specialist within internal medicine" fall?

Do you mean as a specialty hospitalist? Or as an MD specialist?

Received a rejection email earlier today, completed 7/27. OOS, LizzyM ~ 77. Good luck to the rest of y'all!

Dang I guess the start of rejections is real. I suppose the reaper will come for me soon enough...

My stats are lower than those rejected as well, but I know numbers don't mean jack at our level (>3.7)!
I feel good news coming 😀 (no help to feel otherwise tbvh 😛)
C'mon everyone, stop being debbie downers!

I got an email back from admissions regarding how one of my essays got "cut off" when I submitted.

Hello,

Thank you for your e-mail. Our policy with regard to application updates is that additional information may be accepted only after an applicant has been invited to interview.

Thank you for your interest in the Stanford School of Medicine.

Seemed almost automated, and didn't really address my question. Oh well, at least they know.

I had sent a question earlier about something unrelated and I got back this same email. Don't respond to my calls or emails until 2 weeks later and then have the audacity to give me an automated email not even answering my question (nor yours it seems). classless

Frustrating. Oh well. Here's to hoping it works out anyway!

Still waiting on a secondary. LizzyM of 78. Verified 2nd week of June, had Stanford added already. Hmm...

I've had my secondary since the 15th. After seeing the email today, I thought I should probsssss hurry up and submit already since they "STRONGLY urge" that we submit ASAP O_O

It looks like they're moving rather quickly through initial review, hence the pressing tone of the reminder email

Swift MSTP rejection 🙁

Oh no. Sorry, @ADW1994. When did you submit and what were your stats, if you feel comfortable sharing? No worries if not. Didn't realize anyone was giving out MSTP rejections yet... only a matter of time before there are a few in my inbox! Hopefully you will just get this rejection out of the way early and then have lots of IIs headed your way soon!!

Thanks! Hope so! And I was complete July 27th so I wasn't expecting any decisions to be made that quickly. Hopefully, I have no red flags that I didn't realize. Lol. And I have a LizzyM of 74 with research in two labs. I have multiple posters/abstracts (including the Sfn Annual Meeting this year where I'll be presenting) and a manuscript recently submitted.

Thank you for sharing. Sounds like you have an absolutely amazing application -- I am sure you will get IIs elsewhere soon!

So I still havent received this secondary. Not sure if I should bother emailing them?

Thanks for the positivity! It would have been nice to have my first response be an interview to take the sting out of my first rejection, but such is life. And yeah the application was killer and they only took a week to review which was slightly annoying. Lol

Sounds like they want to receive it within three weeks then. I better haul a** and get it in by Friday, but their MSTP secondary is such a beast. 🙁
