2015-2016 University of Maryland Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if Maryland is receptive to letters of intent/updates? I skimmed through the thread and couldn't find any mention.

I was told by my advisors that LOI is only appropriate if you have any communication from the said medical school, especially when you hold acceptance(s) from other med schools

they are receptive to updates. not sure about LOI
+1

Nope. Sadly it's just sit and wait. But rumor is, if you hold the rejection letter up to the light, there is a recipe for pan-fried crabcakes.... sort of a consolation prize.
I heard it's the secret recipe to Berger cookies...

My advisor said the same, but if you want to send an update and the school didn't ask you "Why Med School X" you can use that time to write a brief note. He called it a Letter of Interest...

Have any accepted students gotten confirmation of receipt of their signed reservation form and other materials we had to mail in? I mailed mine about a week ago (I live 30 minutes away) and called just to check that they got there, but they said I should be getting a confirmation.

I did eventually get an email acknowledging the receipt of my seat reservation form. I just sent the medical forms yesterday, so i cannot comment on that.

Hrm, okay. Should I call back to see what's up?

You should be okay. I contacted an admissions staff member via email and (s)he said I will be receiving a confirmation as well. This was on Monday.

I finally got the confirmation yesterday (Thursday) and they say they will be sending a signed letter (via snail mail it seems like) for confirmation

I got a snail mail confirmation from Dr. Foxwell. I am still working on the medical form, but I have another month to get that submitted.

Emailed them, they received it 🙂 I also need to get on the medical forms. My immunization record itself is dated over a year old (I had one emailed to me earlier, now they want me to pay for one, so I figured I could use the older one), but all of the immunizations are from years and years ago, like 10+, so hopefully that's okay if everything is accounted for.

Such a nice guy!

On another note... I just scheduled my TST tests w00t! gonna go back and forth between the clinic and work for 4x over the next week and half :/

You have to get a Tetanus booster at 25, so make sure you're up to date on that if you need it.

Just got an offer of acceptance!!!! ....about 2 weeks ago. They sent my snail mail letter to the wrong address and they didn't send me an email. Good thing that got sorted out otherwise things could have been really bad.

Just as a heads up to everyone: the web portal will NOT reflect your admitted/WL/reject status. The web portal will NOT tell you if a snail mail has been sent out. For those waiting to hear back from UMD, you have to keep your eye on your mailbox, just like in the good ol' days...

Congrats!

Yes - just send in the state residency form ASAP

Anyone know if Maryland is receptive to calls about status inquiries? I was complete at the beginning of August and haven't heard a peep. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the mailed me a rejection letter and I just never received it. I wish they would document communication in the portal...

I have a very quick question for a current student. Please PM me if you see this!

Update: Several students reached out, thanks for being so helpful, Terps!

As already discussed, Maryland has one of the friendliest admissions offices. I'd call if you're curious.

Do any current students or even applicants for this cycle know the deadline for the instate form? I just realized I can get in state status if I were to be accepted here, but I still have to submit my voter registration and get my new drivers license. Is it too late? Was there a deadline?

For everyone who has interviewed recently... I spoke to Dean Foxwell on my interview day (week of 11/16) in passing and he said the Committee will meet again the week of 12/8 and make decisions on the most recent batch on interviewees... Not a guarantee but that may be a big week for us!! just thought I would pass the info onto y'all

Thanks for the info!! I was just thinking I didn't know when to expect to hear back.

Watch out folks. Maryland is putting people on hold again. My name just got added to the list :/

Yep, pre-interview. Does anyone know if they actually pull people off of the hold list and interview them?

It does happen, it happened to a few last year. Obviously still not a good sign though, unfortunately. Keep your fingers crossed and remember it's not over until they officially say no!

Any current students from OOS that can tell me what the process is like for gaining in-state status after one year? Is it feasible? Risky? Much appreciated!

Accepted!! Letter came in today, dated 11/24.
OOS (with ties to state & school), interviewed 11/9. No changes on the portal.

This school was so great, there's little that could stop me from matriculating here~

Good luck everyone!
Congratulations! I am interviewing here in January, and would really appreciate any info about the interview process and how to prepare. Thanks!

It's a very laid-back, traditional interview. Nothing to stress about. If you go back to previous posts, you'll see that you either have 2 interviews before tour/lunch, 2 interviews after tour/lunch, or 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. Good luck!

Basically what the user above me said. Pretty standard stuff, be ready to talk about why medicine, why you'd be a good fit for Maryland, your experiences and their effect on you. I didn't get tricks or anything out of the ordinary, although my interviewer did start the interview by asking if I had any questions, which I wasn't expecting haha. If it means anything, I'm OOS but it's not like they grilled me to see if I would move to Baltimore by any means

Thank you for your response. I am out of state as well and its great to know that they are OOS friendly. 🙂

Interviewed on 11/4, thought my interviews went great, but I still haven't heard back yet. Know 2 others from my interview day who have already received a letter, one accepted and one waitlisted. Anyone else in the same boat? Or have an idea if a longer wait time means anything one way or another? UMD is my #1 choice 🙂
