2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any thoughts on the format of the chronological lists of clinical experience/shadowing and community service/volunteering? Are bullet points OK or should I go ahead and write complete sentences with descriptions of the activity?
I wrote bullet points, like this:

Sidekick for SuperHero (June 2010 - July 2013):
Shined super boots
Ironed super cape
Responded to threats from villains
Saved universe

Is the email requesting a photo sent after the initial "we received your amcas"? Is it part of the secondary or no

Hey, how many days after the initial email did you get a secondary? Some schools didn't get my second score so I'm worried I was screened on my old score.

"Briefly describe the one clinical experience you have had that has most significantly influenced your decision to study medicine. Do not replicate your AMCAS personal statement."

I am having trouble with this question as I don't have ONE clinical experience that most significantly influenced my decision medicine, but many that have cumulatively led me along the path to study medicine (okay maybe wiping butts as a CNA and then watching the doctor tell nurses what medication to give people as he sat comfortably in his large chair).

That said... SDN people, would an experience where I was hospitalized count as a clinical experience? I actually did think it was cool seeing how doctors figured out what was killing me and then prescribe medication which prevented me from dying. That experience did make me want to become a doctor more than ever as in that incident modern medicine kept me from dying which increased my desire for wanting to help extend the lives of other people.
Can anyone advise me on the "most important clinical experience" essay? Do you all think it has to be an experience like shadowing or hospital volunteering, or can it be more personal (assisting family member with serious illness, for example)? I'm guessing it does have to be more like hospital volunteering but thought I would ask anyway.
I asked essentially the same Q but haven't heard any input on this.

It can be personal if done tastefully and relates back to real thoughts and issues. So it can't be like, I had a doctor, I wanted to be him. Or doctors saved Grammy, yay. It has to be a lot deeper than that and relate back to you and your whole app...

Yes you can talk about your own hospitalization or a profound experience with family, but only if it meant something profound to your decision and you have to be able to express that.

I was verified 6/12. I got an email from Miller saying that they had received my primary application from AMCAS on 7/9.

So I accidentally answered "No" to a couple of questions under the "Reapplicants" section even though I'm not a re-applicant. Should I send them an email about this or just assume they'll know I didn't apply previously?

for the questions about pleading guilty to a criminal charge or crime, does that include speeding tickets?

Since they don't ask to exclude traffic violations, I would include it if the speeding ticket is considered a criminal offense in your state (if not then don't include it). In some states they are considered misdemeanors and many thus show up on the background check. The last thing you want to happen is getting accepted and then having your acceptance withdrawn when they find something in your background check you did not disclose. Given how common speeding tickets are, reporting them shouldn't have any significant effect on admissions.

my status changed to "Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their evaluation score from the Admissions Committee review. You will be contacted by email if you are selected for an interview. Interview invitations are extended between August and March. "

Fingers crossed for August!

I sent the picture to the email in the pdf days ago, still not updated. should I send the picture to the email that's in the secondary?

Anyone else not get a secondary? Received email that primary was received. Is their secondary purely stats screen or other stuff?

I got the email my primary was received but nothing else. Super confused about people talking about sending in photos too haha🙂

Was there a second email, after the one saying they recieved your primary, talking about submitting a photo? So lost

Part of the secondary is submitting a photo to be attached with your application. You'll get instructions with your secondary.

Just submitted secondary! When I logged back in looking for a page to pay the fee, it brought me back to the secondary form to submit again... anyone else having this issue?

Anyone know if Miami has a secondary request link? I didn't get any secondary after the initial email on the 1st, and I assume its due to my 2.97cGPA. I have a 35 MCAT and 4.0 SMP and would love to get eyes on my app but if the machine threw me out, what can I do

If I manage to complete this secondary app, then I might as well be qualified to write a book...10 questions x 500 word limit is killer X___X My poor pile of other secondaries on queue just gets bigger and bigger as I struggle to trudge through filling out this app. Finishing this will make a lot of the other secondaries seem like a cake walk!

does anyone know how strict is their biochem requirement? I only have 1 quarter of biochem but i have 3 quarters of ochem, is it possible to substitute ochem 2 as one of the biochem requirement?

For the 'One Clinical Experience' essay...when they say not to 'duplicate' your primary, is this in regards to copying & pasting sentences, or the topic in general?

I think it's okay if you want to talk about an experience that you mentioned in your primary, but be sure to bring up new information and not repeat what you have already mentioned. Obviously it's a bad idea to cut and paste, but I'd also try to avoid saying the same things but just reworded.

How long after sending in your photo did you receive a confirmation email? I still haven't heard anything.

Omgah finally submitted this beast of a supplementary tonight! I'm glad not every app requires 11 essays; that was brutal. X__X

I already got the photo email confirmation but it still says 'missing' on the secondary app status but hopefully that just takes time to update...

Anyone that has still yet to receive this secondary? I think it's time for me to email them about it

There is a screening process for secondary applications so they might be sending letters out in batches.

I haven't received it either. Not sure if it's just stats based screen or wholesome?

how important is actually getting near the word limit..500 words is...extensive.

To be honest, I think only 2/11 of my responses were ~470 words; the rest were closer to ~300 but I think as long as you get your point across, don't try to add any unnecessary frills for the sake of reaching the word limit.

my optional "hobbies" one is like 2 sentences..should i try harder?

The thing is that MSAR says all US citizens get the secondary so I would have thought it would be quick

Interesting. Maybe they just take their time? They took at least a month to send me one last year lol.

I guess it's possible that they are just trying to avoid being overwhelmed with everyone's app at once. I'll remain patient a little longer I suppose

if you forgot to put the dates of your clinical experiences...how bad is this. It is in the primary, so I don't think I should be freaking out?

for the first 500 word question, about 'the one clinical experience that most significantly influenced your decision to study medicine..', would it be wrong to talk about shadowing since it asks for a clinical experience?
