2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha I just checked on my computer, and the image takes up my entire screen 😛 Definitely won't be missing it this time!

C'moooooon Miami! This is the one school I've really been hoping to get an II from!

Weird! I wonder why I can't see it. Tried two different browsers.

Hi everyone! Can anyone comment on if your interviewer expects you to know which program (MD or MD/MPH) you prefer/are more interested in if you have been invited to interview for both? At this point I'm 50/50. I've heard good and bad things about the MD/MPH, so I really don't want to commit to either if they ask during the interview. Then again, I don't want to seem indecisive.

Is it rare to be accepted into both programs?

May I ask what bad things you've heard regarding the MD/MPH program? I applied to it as well, in addition to at other schools, and am curious as to what actual students have to say about it.

Would love an II here. Partly because it would mean that all those essays paid off (at least to an extent).

Some commenters in a previous Miami thread said it was more intense/did not leave much room for studying, but many others said that wasn't true and that the person making those comments was just bitter. I'm not sure how much of it was drama or not...

Can any current MD/MPH students discuss their experience thus far?h

I'm MD, but I know some of the MD/MPH'ers. Right now, their schedule is pretty chill. When they started back in late June or whatever, they only took public health classes, so they had tons of free time during the week and especially on weekends. They have started anatomy, but it's longitudinal, not the 8 weeks of hell that I'm currently in lol. MD/MPH will get busier later when they take all their med classes. But from what I can see, they are having a good time thus far.

How is the workload like for you currently? On average how many hours per day do you and other students study? Just wanted to get an idea

I've been "scored" for both MD and MD/MPH for about 2 weeks now 🙁 anyone else experiencing/have experienced this status for this long? Thanks in advance!

On the MD only application, does it actually say your application has been scored, or just reviewed?

This is what it states: "Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their evaluation score from the Admissions Committee review. You will be contacted by email if you are selected for an interview. Interview invitations are extended between August and March."

Mine has said that for about a month. At this point I'm taking it as a silent rejection.

It doesn't sound like someone has gotten an MD only II in quite some time, I wouldn't worry yet

The bulk of MD only II's seemed to pick up a little later last year as well. I think the vast majority of the earlier ones are MD/MPH and UM undergrads that are applying MD-only. This isn't based on any factual information though, just my personal observations and things I've heard from classmates.

It really depends on the person. Not counting lecture, but counting group studying both inside and outside anatomy lab, I'd say I study about 6-7 hours a day. I know people who study more at the expense of sleep and people who study less and go work out more than I do. It all depends, and most of us are still transitioning, trying to find what works best for us.

Thanks for the input!

MD only as well but I'll chime in too. I've read the thread you're taking about and I don't think that person's comments accurately represent the MD/MPH program at all. As @Ace Khalifa said, the MD/MPHers seem to have had a fairly relaxed schedule thus far, but I've heard it picks up within the next couple months. After all, they're getting an extra degree in basically the same amount of time, and that doesn't come without some extra work. However, all of the older MD/MPHers I've met seem to genuinely enjoy the program and none of them have mentioned anything about feeling unreasonably overburdened.

I would recommend you consider your learning style and career goals when making your decision. The MD/MPH program is more PBL-oriented whereas MD is more traditional. Additionally, MD/MPH students have a genuine interest in public health and intend to pursue careers in that capacity.

After I got the email about my picture being received I checked the portal and it appears that they didn't mark it off with my application as complete. Did it take time for others between confirmation and it actually being marked as complete?

It took them one day to check mine off on the website.

I was so excited when I saw my status change today but it just ended up saying the same thing but in a green font rather than the black font that it was before......:dead: Complete 8/10 still "under review"

What everyone else has been saying is exactly what I've heard. The extra work, PBL, etc. My first and foremost goal in medicine lies in being a clinician, and I like having lots of free time to study, so I'm a just a little hesitant about the extra work in the MD/MPH program. I want an MPH, but I may end up deciding to focus on one degree at a time instead of taking on possibly too much and biting off more than I can chew.

do you know when they initially changed your status befor the interview invite?
No I submitted apps and never looked back. I'm taking it an email at a time. Hakuna Matata. Have faith that the IIs will come.

Side note: anyone know how these interviews are run? What types of questions they like to ask?

Interviews are open file. My interviewer asked me to go more in depth for each thing I had on my secondary. Then transitioned to standard interview questions including ethics. Took about 1 hour total.

Please respond! I'm interviewing later in the month too..and this is probably my top choice OOS right now that have invited me for an interview..

The interview day is pretty typical, various presentations from different deans, a tour of the campus, lunch with students, etc. As far as the interview goes, your interviewer is one of the three people who scored your application, so they already view you favorably. The interview is an hour long and fairly conversational. Mine started off with my interviewer asking me to elaborate/discuss/clarify various parts of my application (research, community service, healthcare exposure) etc. I couldn't see for sure but I think he had printed my application beforehand and written notes of things he wanted to ask. After that, they have a packet of questions they go through that covers things like why Miami, career goals, moral/ethical healthcare-related MMI-type questions, etc. At the end I had about 10 minutes left to ask questions and talk about random stuff. It may have just been my specific interviewer, but Miami was definitely one of my more relaxed/laid back interviews.

So you have only one interviewer throughout the entire process? Thanks so much for responding by the way 🙂

Looking for a travel buddy! My interview is Sept. 18th and I will be staying in Miami for 4 days after that. I would like someone to travel with me those few days. I will be exploring the city and the areas close by. If you are local and would like to show me around, that would be quite amazing!

@Ace Khalifa Do you know if you can apply to the mph post MD acceptance? I suppose I didn't read closely enough when they said, you're looked a separately for md vs md/mph and apparently md/mph is more forgiving of stats. My initial thought process was that I kinda wanted to get my foot in the door with just the MD since my stats aren't the greatest.

I'll bring it up in my interview anyway but I just wanted a quick heads-ups. Thanks man.

I'm not sure, actually. You'll have to ask one of the MD/MPH'ers.

MD II just now! IS with LizzyM of 67-69.

When they say "As we are nearing the end of the application cycle, we ask that you respond to this email within one week." Does that mean they want me to actually email them back as well as enter my preferences in the website?

when should I start to be concerned that my status hasn't changed from the "under review" to "review complete"? it's been almost 2 months

I wouldn't worry yet. Mine was also under review for about 2 months, and just flipped to "review complete" yesterday.
