2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you don't mind sharing, what date did you interview? I interviewed back in 12/18 (for MD, I think MD/PhD dates are different) and I still have the "committee with make a final decision" message.

Hey, I also interviewed on 12/18

Congrats to all those recently accepted! Please consider attending second look weekend so that you can get a better idea of why you should come here (and so I can actually meet y'all lol)!

For sure! Just a quick questions for you:

1) Is there a FB group? If so, how do the accepted students join?

🙂

I'm assuming second look costs are all out of pocket? I remember a friend a few cycles ago getting a school to cover her flight for it, but I doubt that's the norm.

There should be a class of 2020 fb group eventually. I'm not sure if my class officers have made it yet.

It is certainly not the norm. You would most likely have to pay for everything. But I think Miami's second look is worth it, even if you don't end up coming. I didn't go last year cuz I didn't get accepted til after, but all my friends who did go said it was a lot of fun.

UGH, flights got cancelled for my interview this week, I rescheduled for a month from now, do you think this'll have an impact on my chances of being accepted? Love the school and the MD/MPH program.

I doubt it will significantly impact your chance of being accepted. Miami ranks all interviewed applicants and takes the top 20 (or 30?) at each adcom meeting, rather than getting more selective with their standards as the cycle proceeds. Good luck!

I got an email a few days after being accepted asking me to join the Facebook group! They might do it in batches though so I'm sure you'll be added soon.

Also - we were asked not to share the link. If you were accepted, you'll be added soon 🙂

Does anyone know when to expect more info or materials? The acceptance letter was regular sized and just the letter. Schools normally send larger folders with more detailed info, right? Including Miami?

Hey, could any current students speak to the grading system? Pros, cons, etc?

Hey, could any current students speak to the grading system? Pros, cons, etc?

Just my personal opinion, but I view it as pretty irrelevant as the vast majority of our class tends to do well on exams. The consensus amongst everything I've read and been told are that the most important factors for residency applications are step scores, research, letters of recommendation, and AOA. Your pre-clinical quartile is reflected in one word of one sentence of one paragraph of your Dean's letter (you are either a good, great, outstanding, etc. student) as opposed to third year where each rotation constitutes its own paragraph, so minimal effect there. And AOA is going to be difficult to get regardless of graded or Pass/Fail.

In the end, good grades are an indicator that you have mastered the material, which should correlate with a higher step score. However, as far as the effect of a graded pre-clinical system on your medical school experience or competitiveness during residency applications, I think its negligible. At best it may give you a small boost if the aforementioned parts of your application are already strong (or to show that you are a good student in spite of a low step score), but I think it's a non-factor for most students.

Pros? It forces you to study, I guess.
Cons? It's really stressful if you always want to be above average or are gunning for AOA.
Grades are really only important for AOA. Other than that, just study well enough so that when it's time to really study for step 1, the material can come back quicker the second time around.

Trust SDNers to start worrying about when materials are coming in the mail after they've already been accepted and it's 6+ months before they're going to matriculate 🙄

Sorry but I want to have as much info as possible as early as possible because I need my **** together and am planning a super complicated family vacation that is complicated because I don't know what dates it can be on lol

Also, idk, but it doesn't feel 100% real without a big folder full of stuff 😀

Here's the M1 class schedule for the upcoming academic year: http://admissions.med.miami.edu/calendar/freshman-calendar
That may help with planning your trip. Any other information you need I would call the admissions office to ask when you can expect to receive it.

Just got an email from the student gov't reps saying that I've been accepted, but didn't get a phone call or anything... Really hoping it's not a mistake lmao. This happen to anyone else today?

Yes, happened to me too. Tried to contact admissions, but no answer...

Quick question, probably a silly one too, but when you get scored for this school, what does that mean exactly? Do they give you an actual score based on your application?

See the first post of this thread.

It gets scored. They don't give you what that value is.

Received confirmation that they got my update just now, but still haven't been scored

Edit: I called the admissions office, and the lady said they don't update your portal when you're scored, only when a decision has been made. This contradicts what I've seen on this thread. Has anyone gotten an ii without being scored first? Also interviews are offered through mid March.

how long did it take them to acknowledge your update? I sent mine in a few weeks ago and didn't get any confirmation

I was also just notified that they received my update that I sent a few weeks ago

Does anyone know what exact courses Miami considers as part of the Humanities? This is a part of the behavioral sciences requirement.

Maybe 3 weeks? Around that time. They apologized for the delay in the email lol

+1

More info than I have ever gotten out of them, nice detective work!

Man, I sent an update around November (which was received) and I still haven't been scored. It's ridiculous.

Got the email today as well after sending in my update ~4 weeks ago. Here's what it said:

"Dear _______

We apologize for the delay in responding.

Sincerely,

Office of Admissions

University of Miami Miller School of Medicine."
