2015-2016 University of Pittsburgh Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got my II over 5 weeks ago and the only available times were in December, but there could have been people who cancelled a November interview because of an acceptance elsewhere.

Ahh... I was hoping to move mine up before Thanksgiving. My employer is relocating me in the beginning of December, and along with the hectic nature of moving, I'd prefer not to kick off my new position by taking a day or two off.

Just ask the admissions office if there was a cancellation. Occasionally people do need to move interview dates or decide not to attend an interview for various reasons.

The bus is pretty nice! Takes a little longer (an hour vs. 30 min) from the airport. It passes right through the Pitt medical area, but you may want to confirm that the place you're staying has a stop nearby (use google maps). They only take cash, exact change only, so bring coins. It comes every half hour, 6am-midnight. I took it both there and back without a problem.

@wanderyonder, What time was your flight out of the Pittsburgh Airport? Interview day is supposed to end around 3:30 and my flight is at 6:05; the earliest bus I could take to the airport leaves around 4 and arrives at the airport at 5:08. Seems uncomfortably tight so I think I might Uber to the airport just to be safe.

Also, were you able to leave your luggage with the admissions office during the day or did you have to leave it at your hotel/with your host?

My flight was at 6:15pm and I made it in pretty decent time. One thing you could do is find the busstop beforehand so that you don't wander around looking for it after your interview. (the stop where you get on is not the same place as the stop you get off since it's 2 anti-parallel one-way streets.) Uber is never a bad option--even better if you can get 2 or 3 fellow interviewees to join you.

Yup, every school I've been to has provided a place to store luggage during the day. Pitt had a little closet in the admissions office.

The closest 28x stop is right down the hill from the med school on Fifth and Atwood. You're at the right stop if you're across the street facing the front of Popeyes.

I went to Pitt undergrad. Gratuating in 3 years with a double major and applied MSTP. Rejected from my top choice program after what i thought was a solid interview three weeks ago 🙁((((((

LizzyM 72.5
Hold on I thought all post interview results were given in January? Or is it different for mstp

Either way, sorry to hear that 🙁

You can be rejected from MSTP but you are still eligible for acceptance to the MD program. The MD only is the one with the decisions released in January.

Hello all. Just signed up for my interview in mid November. I think I submitted my secondary 10/18 and I got the notification about my interview 12 days later. So if anyone is applying late, there's still a shot! I was having trouble getting a committee letter together and ultimately gave up so I could finally submit. Good luck to everyone, and I'm excited to meet some of you on the interview day!

Anyone here submit a post-interview update? If so, did they confirm receipt of your e-mail and update?

How sure are you that our application is still being considered for the regular MD? I just got off the phone with the admissions office and they said it was too late and that it would not be considered after being rejected from the MSTP program.

I am very sure that you are still in the running for MD after MSTP rejection. Perhaps there was a misunderstanding on the phone.

Two questions about requirements:

1) Does anyone know if Pitt accepts community college coursework for their requirements? MSAR says yes, but it's not always correct...
2) Does anyone know if after acceptance Pitt can waive a requirement? Example I took Orgo I and Biochem, but they want Orgo II...

Thanks!

I'm not positive about my answer for either question and I don't want to tell you the wrong thing. Call admissions office tomorrow for a definitive answer, they're very nice.

Emailed them and the answer is yes, Pitt accepts community college coursework.

I'm pretty pissed too. I went to Pitt, got letters from high up UPMC doctors, had LizzyM 75 with strong upward gpa trend, and I thought (could be wrong) that I had good letters and essays. I sometimes think this whole thing is a crap shoot.
how many times have you applied to medical school?

Does anyone have any ideas on how many in-state applicants are accepted, are rejected, or withdrawal from the waitlist after interviewing?

That is an extremely specific question that I think only the dean of admissions would have.

No decisions go out until Jan 31, except early decision obviously. Doesn't matter when you interview.
They told us Jan 29 this year. Except ED. The GAP people already know they're in but even they dont get the official letter until the 29th from what my roommate is complaining about lol.

MSTP results go out 2-3 weeks post-interview. But technically we aren't in 100% until we get the MD acceptance on Jan. 29th. However they said that if you are accepted MSTP, you are accepted MD in almost every case (like you wouldn't get accepted MSTP and then rejected MD in January).

Accepted MSTP a few weeks ago and forgot to post here! FWIW, my portal still says that my app is "under review" for both MSTP and MD.

For those who have interviewed, do they give you the name of your faculty interviewer beforehand?

So this is just the day of the interview? They do not send out any information to you before you arrive?
Nope, not the day before you arrive. But you'll have plenty of time before the interview anyway (which doesn't happen til after lunch) to Google your faculty interviewer should you choose to - just be discreet about it and don't just automatically take out your phone in the admissions office to do it. Some people in my group did that and it was distracting to have people on their phones during downtime/when we were all just talking.

Thanks for the info!!!

They do. It's in your folder when you sign in.
Edit: sorry, didn't see that a million people replied to you already!

I'm pretty sure the name of my interviewer was printed on the intinerary that an admissions office staff member gave me at the beginning of interview day. I wouldn't bother looking up anything other than their department/field though; might seem weird to know about the person before you actually meet them, you know?

ignore me, thought I was at the end of the thread on last page and that the question about interviewer name was unanswered but y'all answered it

Is anyone able to offer any advice for hotels in the area? Trying to coordinate travel plans. Thx!

On the morning of the interview they gave each of us a sheet with a timeline for the interview day and the name of the faculty interviewer. So basically, you won't know until the day of your interview. Hope this helps 🙂

I drove to my interview and stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn. It was nice, reasonably priced, had parking, and was easy walking distance (though it was uphill) to Scaife Hall. We actually walked by it on our student led tour.

I am going to be staying at Hilton Garden Inn. Like SweetFast said, it is close to the med campus and I think there is a 28x stop right in front of it if you are taking the bus from the airport.

I stayed with a student host and found it really helpful//pro: they probably live a walkable distance from the school
2nd pro: save $$$

The name of your faculty interviewer will be on your welcome sheet when you first arrive, but you won't know your student interviewer until he/she comes to get you. Good luck with your interview!

Just at the beginning of the day when they give you your schedule

Thanks @Ismet @SweetFast @trini818 . That sounds perfect then! Also, I've seen this med ranking website called medhound referred to in other schools' sdn threads. Has anyone heard of it/used it?

Did anyone who has sent in an update receive a confirmation email from the admissions office? Thanks!
