2015-2016 University of Rochester Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those of you getting IIs, what are your stats?

LizzyM ~70. Based on the ranges they list on MSAR, my undergrad cGPA/sGPA are in the really low percentiles (though my grad school GPA is much prettier and shinier, so I have to assume that helped) and my MCAT is average.

the interview day is very relaxed. small number of other interviewees (i had just over a dozen other interviewees and they said that's their largest group), everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful! they post a list of the schools interviewees are coming from so don't be alarmed if some med students come through the admissions office asking who's from their alma mater! two interviews are very conversational and they only have the info you send in for your interview, not your whole file. overall a very enjoyable day. best of luck!

Hey thanks so much for replying to me!

That seems comforting so I'm glad to hear it. I guess I'll just prepare myself best I can this week.

Just out of curiosity , do you guys think if someone has multiple acceptances, shouldn't they just choose the top 2 schools they want to attend and withdraw from others?
There are so many people waiting just to get an opportunity to interview.
I would withdraw if I was in that position.

I think everyone does withdraw from schools they don't think they'll attend. The problem is when people have multiple acceptances at schools they may see themselves going to. Then it turns into researching the schools more deeply, talking with current students, going through 2nd look and things like that.

I think there are very few people who say "YES! 10 ACCEPTANCES! NOW I CAN HOARD ALL THE SPOTS I WANT AND WATCH THESE NEUROTIC PREMEDS ON SDN SUFFER HAHAHAHAHAHA".

Lest we forget financial aid. MSAR sticker price doesn't mean that much and then FAFSA etc happens much later.

I think lots of people apply to a bunch of schools, but could be happy at any of them, then in the end decide based on price.

Since getting into medical school is something we have been working towards for years, and the notion that going to ANY medical school is a privilege, I think that makes it very tricky when deciding between/among schools post acceptances. Also attending accepted students days and waiting for financial aid packages can be very important in shaping decisions, so I don't think it is insane holding onto multiple acceptance until the spring. Like you said people may be happy going to any school, but it then becomes about price and which school will lead to the most happiness. That being said I also see the other side in opening spots for other people who will go to the school.

Exactly. Accepted students also may wish to consider merit and financial aid offered by individual schools.

Obviously, I concur that candidates should withdraw from schools that they would not consider attending, but that's for them to decide.

what's the best way to travel from rochester to the bronx?! i scheduled everything without checking the map (oops I'm from CA and I think everything in NY is right next to each other), but I just realized they're 6 hours apart... and i refuse to book a nonrefundable flight cause I'm broke help!!!!

Are you trying to get to the Bronx or Rochester? You can rent a car and drive. Or you could fly (it's really short).
It also might be worth calling the airline and trying to change/ cancel your ticket. NY State is really big btw.

I have back to back interviews, so trying to get to the Bronx from Rochester! I was thinking of taking the Trailways bus? It would get into NYC at around 10 at night, and then I was going to taxi to the Bronx. I've heard it can be sketchy around there, so I'm questioning if that's the best decision... It would save me a lot $$ and give me lots of flexibility though!

I think the bus ride is pretty long. You can take a cab from the city, but it'll be pricey.

Where in NYC does your bus stop? If you are going to Albert Einstein in the Bronx, the area is not that bad. You can take the 6 train from Manhattan all the way up and you can technically walk from the Westchester Square station (though it will be very late and dark) or just take a really short Uber/Lyft (5 minutes max - $8 ride). Calling a car from Manhattan to Bronx will be very expensive (~$50 I think).

It stops at port authority bus terminal. Google maps says ~14 miles apart/30 min ride. How much do you think that'll be? $50 sounds about right..:'''(

+3 This is disappointing. I really thought my experiences aligned well with the school's mission statement. Oh well 🙁

Rejected, pre-interview as well. Survived the first few massacres, but oh well!

Bummed because it would have been great to visit, but best of luck to others in the running!

Rejected too :/ got an email. Complete late July.

Joining the rejection party. Complete 7/4 and survived so many other rejections, but not this one. I felt like I was a great fit for this school, but I guess not. :/

No better way to start my Wednesday than I nice heartfelt rejection from Rochester. UGH. I really liked this school -- wishing all of you the best who are still in the running!

Complete mid-September. OOS, LizzyM ~68

Just got my invite onto the rejection train. Complete Mid-August. This one hurts a bit, though I sort of felt it coming after all the II's earlier this week.

Guys, this whole process is so crazy. "This year we received over 6,500 applications for the 104 seats in our entering class." I know that some students apply to 20-30 schools, thus inflating numbers like this a bit, but this is still so crazy! Trying to stay positive here, but it can be hard some times.

Good luck to those still in the running.

Rejected as well, complete 7/6. What a nice rejection email though! Good luck to those of you still in the running.

Rejected today, pre-II, LM 72-74, complete September. This would have been a fun school to go to, although I'm not sure if I would have picked it over the school I'm accepted at.

Where were u accepted ?

Rejected pre-interview via email this morning. Complete 10/15, OOS, LizzyM ~74. Good luck to everyone!

Hey all. Does anyone know if Rochester is receptive to pre II update letters?
Looks like I might have survived the recent bloodshed and want to get a letter in before the next if possible.

Sorry about all of the rejections. Good luck with your other schools!

if 6500+ people applied this year, according to MSAR data, that's almost a 25% increase in applications this season...

I sent a pre-interview update. I think that they are very receptive... not sure on the success of it though as I have not received an II. lol (but I have not been rejected either)

Edit: I did receive an interview.

Survived another round of rejection, or my package was lost...

For those received the ax today, good luck with the rest of programs you applied to!
