2015-2016 University of Texas - Galveston Application Thread

I'm assuming they wait for entire application to arrive before putting your application "under review"??
...Still waiting on my committee letter packet to be sent out...

Not necessarily, some people have received II's without it.

have a general question. if you submitted earlier than some people but they got interview does that mean your rejected? just confused about this process because if not why did it matter to apply early haha

I don't think so, you aren't rejected until you get the letter saying so. It'll say something like "we got a lot of applications, etc etc, strong applicants, etc, etc, and unfortunately our interview season is over"

From what I understand, if you haven't got an interview they have either 1) not seen your application yet or 2) reviewed your application and put it "on hold" meaning they can still give you an interview later

Late reply, but I got a II for 8/21. I got the email on 7/13 but it went into my spam folder. I got another email in my inbox a week later asking me to confirm. Needles to say I've been scouring my spam folder every day since.

TMDSAS transmitted 7/3 and still no 'under review' email from UTMB, (all other TX schools have though)
Anybody else with similar dates and no email?! I'm gettin worried:grumpy:

My TMDSAS app was transmitted 5/28 and I got their under review email 7/17. I worried about it for days and called/emailed a bunch and they kept saying "they go through the applications 'in no specific order'". You could call and ask them about it if it makes you feel better, it made my wait decently better

I wouldn't worry yet. Galveston for me was the last school to send an Under Review email. It seems like Galveston is usually the last school to send an Under Review email, and A&M doesn't send anything (at least not for me).

I was in the same situation as you. I called them, during which they told me that they had my app. An hour later I got the "under review" email. This was on 7/7, a little over a week after my app had been transmitted.

Incoming UTMB MSI here to offer some friendly advice I wish I had known before last year's application cycle. First off congrats to those with interviews so far! To those with no invites yet, stop worrying, it is WAY early in interview season, no reason to give yourself a heart attack this early 😛
1) There seriously is no rhyme or reason to why you have or haven't gotten an interview/application under review etc. Each school varies on this process, so just give it some time. Last cycle I received an invite early September from UTSA for an interview that wasn't until January, invite from TT Lubbock at the end of december for an interview that was one week later..etc. it doesn't make sense, but it doesn't mean you won't get an invite, just be patient.
2) specifically to this thread, UTMB likes to run on "Island Time". Trust me on this. We are almost three weeks out from starting school and haven't even received orientation packets or anything. UTMB is VERY laid back, which for the typical pre-med (like me) was so nerve wracking. So don't get too worried when things aren't happening on the timeline you think or want them to.
3)Something I really wished I would've known before the interview season started but wasn't told until my final interview at UTSA: If you got an interview, stop worrying about your GPA/MCAT/LizzyM score etc. If you've made it to the interview, this is the school telling you, yes we think you are a great academic candidate who can definitely handle medical school. (Words from the mouth of the UTSA Dean). Once you've made it to the interview, they are not going to reject you or accept you for scores or grades. These just get you to the interview. Getting accepted or rejected is highly influenced by the interview itself, and how much your interviewers advocate for you in the committee meetings. Your extra-curriculars and letters can make a big impact as well. So if you've submitted your application and are not about to retake the MCAT, just put your scores behind you and focus on interview prep and keeping your grades up this coming semester.
4)Lastly, acceptances, even though you are farrr away from that point right now, just thought I'd throw this out there for when acceptances start rolling out. Just like interview invites, the acceptance part of this process varies from school to school and sometimes doesn't make sense. I interviewed at UTMB at the start of pre-match, and didn't receive my pre-match acceptance until the very end of december. On the other hand, I received my pre-match acceptance from TT El Paso the day after my interview. It all depends on the school's review process. UTMB, and many of the other Texas schools, have set days to sit down as a committee and review applicants who interviewed during a specific time block. TT El Paso on the other hand, reviews all interviewees the same day they were interviewed, hence my next day pre-match. Also, for in state applicants, don't get so stressed over pre-match. Just because you didn't pre-match at a specific school does NOT mean you will be rejected. I know a lot of current and incoming students at galveston who did not prematch to UTMB, but got in on the match process or off the wait list (seriously wait list is not bad so many people are accepted this way).

So all and all, just wanted to hopefully lower your stress level at least a little bit on this process. It's long and tedious, but so worth it in the end. Good luck to you all!

Just got my first II ever! This is both exciting and terrifying. I'm scheduled for 9/11 and had an "under review" email on 7/13. LORs not in yet.

Congrats! Can you share your stats if you don't mind?

Also, can I just say you have the best username/picture ever? 😀

Anyone have details on the social the night before the interview (like time, dress code, etc.)? I haven't heard anything about it yet other than the first mention on the II email

Did you not get the attachments? There's one entire page about the social, with info on how to RSVP for it, time, location, etc.

I have three attachments, none of which explain the social...the only mention of it says "more information to come"

What's the view on going to the social?

I can't comment on UTMB, but I went to the social before my last interview and it was a great experience. I had the opportunity to learn a lot of the school and student body.

I got 4 attachments so you must just be missing the social attachment. Maybe contact them? Social is 6:30pm to 8pm the night before the interview (for planning purposes until you can get the actual document).

The social is highly recommended. More so if its your first interview. It will give you a chance to ask all of your real questions in a no stakes situation. Plus you get a real feel of what UTMB students are like.

And yes I agree with GalvyGirl, we run on island time here.

Best of luck everyone

MSIV

So I know the social is supposed to be very casual, but what are y'all wearing? My pre-med adviser told us we could wear jeans, but I don't want to come under or over dressed.

I also have a question about this. Button up or a Polo?

I have not decided if I am going to the social yet. Is there a deadline for RSVPing? I interview 8/28!

Has anyone heard back about student hosts?
I filled out the online form two weeks ago and it says it sends an automated confirmation email but I never got that so I'm starting to wonder whether it worked or not.

You should have got an email asking to pay a 20$ fee, and then a week before the interview they send you info on your host if you have one

Congrats! 🙂 When did your app transmit?
Transmitted - 7/13
Under Review - 7/29

Hope this helps but I don't know whether this really means much because I received my "Under Review" email from UT Houston long before the other schools and haven't gotten an II yet.

Awesome!!! Well if it makes you feel better, I still haven't received an "under review" email from UT Houston and I transmitted on 7/21. And no interviews from any other schools yet. Hoping for something soon!

Such a drawn out process from the time you submit your application until it is transmitted and "under review" to the II but best of luck! I think they are teaching us "patience" before we one day treat "patients"

So I'm the dummy who got an II two weeks ago but didn't know--check your spam folders!

Luckily they sent me a nice reminder email! See ya'll on the 4th!

If it weren't for that email I would have missed it entirely.
