2015-2016 University of Texas - Houston Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
II today, application also under review 9/25 and I had the same 3 dates available as hopeSO.

I also got an interview today! Same three dates and same under review date, although I submitted way back in June. I'm happy they finally got back to me though, Houston is my favorite out of the schools I have a decent shot at getting into (Southwestern and Baylor are my reach schools).

I got the "Application Received" email in mid-July, but nothing else after that. Is there an "Application Complete" or "Application Under Review" type email that they send out?

Yeah they send out an under review email. They are pretty slow (submitted in June, under review in September), so you kinda just have to wait for them to get to your app.

The 13th, 20th, and one other date in November (I believe it is the 19th) are what are available for November. Nothing was posted in December, but I highly doubt they do not have dates for the month.

They will definitely interview all the way through January!

I'm sure! With how late they and UTRGV are into the cycle, I wouldn't be surprised if they interviewed all the way up until the match! 🙂

Hi there! I submitted very late 10/1,transmitted 10/20,under review 10/25..... Do they go through late applications faster?

Ayyyyy. We have crazy similar stats! Good luck bro.

You should PM me the breakdown of your MCAT, I'm curious. I took a heavy blow with 126 in Verbal, but otherwise we're the same.

Also, does anyone know what their stats are?[/QUOTE]

I think last year's were 3.5-3.9 cumulative GPA's and a 33 MCAT. If you have an MSAR account you can check for any school (Texas included).

This is what I find from MSAR: 3.56-4 GPA range, 32 average MCAT. 3420 applied, 791 interviewed, 222 matriculated (probably 2-3x accepted)

They did say that they were interviewing about 1000 this year though. So the percentages might be a little different.

Ohh interesting. Does this include out of state applicants too?

Okayy because I was only reporting data for in-state applicants (which is what most of us are interested in haha)

For IS and OOS, there are 845 total interviews and 240 matriculated last year. Maybe the increase in II account for applicants that choose to matriculate to the two new schools instead?

Damn they interview a lot of people. Now I am freaking out :wow:

Houston doesn't prematch a whole lot do they? For some reason, I can't find this type of info anywhere.

We were told at my interview that only about 20-40 people are accepted during the pre-match period. Most of us are going to have to wait until February.

Accepted vs. Offered I think, is the distinction. How many offers do they make? If 20-40, by their own stats, thats really only taking out 20-25 seats. Does this also include OOS?

The admissions director said "we only send out about 20-40 offers during pre-match." So 20-40 is acceptances offered by UTH. I don't think they can ever really guess how many of those early acceptances will end up ranking UTH #1 in February. I wouldn't be surprised if nearly all of those end up at UTH though. The fact that they offer so few for a class of 240 suggests that they only offer to those applicants who are qualified and clearly dead set on UTH. I think that if they like you and they know you'll go there 100% if accepted, that's when the pre match offers come in. This is just speculation though. I've been known to be wrong on occasion.
As for OOS, I didn't quite catch what she said, but I do know she addressed those applicants separately. I am not sure if this is because there is a different process, or if it was just because OOS applicants could start hearing decisions in October and she was just letting them know to expect something soon. I'm inclined to the latter, but I'd check just to be sure.

I feel like the point of the prematch is for those students they feel they may lose to more competitive schools, in the hopes that the very competitive candidates rank them higher come prematch.

The numbers say that 65% of the offers made to students from UT-H are accepted; the rest are turned down (240/364 in 2014, check my link above).

Ostensibly, come match day, there would be a maximum of 240 matches and therefor offers. This suggests that, even at a high rate of 50% attrition of highly competitive candidates to other schools in which they retained their pre-matches post-match... and *then* subsequent filling off the wait list...thats at least ~60 prematch offers, not 20-40. I think what they may have been saying is that they retain 20-40 from the prematch; that would fit way better with the math. I'll ask on Friday and get back to you.

Either way, they offer about 124 more acceptances than they have spots, but most of that is happening during the match.

No need to get back to me! I was there when she told us not to expect a pre-match, because they only send out 20-40. Y'all are really overthinking this. Just be normal and know your application and you'll be fine when it comes to matching with a school. All of them are great.

I'll get back to you anyway, since we both know you love talking to me. 🙂

Its not so much overthinking as it is just wanting to know - its anxiety inducing and information just helps.

I had my interview late september and we were told up to 60 pre match offers would be given...so not really sure what's going to go down on the 15th. But yes, having more information will definitely reduce the anxiety!

At my UTH interview day, we were told by someone on the admissions staff (I don't remember her name) that they only send out ~45 prematches. She reaffirmed that UTH is a "match heavy" school.

However, after speaking to students, it sounds like it was waaay more than 45 who prematched last year. Of course this is just my experience, but I've met and heard about a lot more people prematching and getting in off the waitlist than matching. I don't know if they sent out an abnormally high # of prematches last year or what.

I also know it is not helpful to dwell on this and speculate, but whatever, it's less than 3 days away from prematch! I'm getting antsy.

Does anyone know if UTH gives out OOS scholarships?

I know they give a bunch but I'm not sure every ooser gets one

Has anyone received an actual acceptance letter in the mail? The portal offer says it will come "soon". One month later...

Anyone submit in August and still waiting on an email from Houston confirming that they received your app?
