2015-2016 University of Utah Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The class size is ~105 and Dr. Chan said that they'll give out 2x the acceptances of the class size during Interview Day. Meaning that there will be about 200 total acceptances. The FB group currently has 60 members. 60/200 = 30% of acceptance offers have been given out. This aligns with what they said that 30% of offers will be given out before March 15. Don't freak out!
Is the class size no longer going to be 120?

I apologize if this has already been addressed (although I don't see it in the last 10 or so pages). Any idea how many interview dates are left?

You're right. Sorry, I just made up a random number off the top of my head lol.
Edit: Since its 120, then that means that there will be 240 offers. 60/240 = 25% of acceptance offers have been given out. Good news for you all 🙂

I don't believe that number is accurate. Outside of the admission office there is a chart with all the statistics from last years admissions cycle. According to that chart, they accepted 172 applicants (I think...can't remember exactly) for 120 seats. I don't know if they were planning on accepting more people this year or about the same number. I would guess that it was closer to 170 acceptances than 240. (Sorry if that is a buzzkill for people...it is just what the chart says)

If memory serves me correctly (which it has been known not to do during exams), interview dates are every Monday and Friday, and they will be held through the end of this month. That means possibly:

Feb 12 (Happy Birthday Abe!)
Feb 15 (which may not happen due to President's Day- I can't say one way or the other)
Feb 19
Feb 22
Feb 27
Feb 29

This sounds a lot closer to what I have heard/seen in my past experience.

Good I'm glad the U is coming out of the stone age and moving towards rolling admissions. Maybe when my kids or grandkids apply they'll catch up to the rest of the nation.

I've been told on several occasions (by Admissions Staff) that kids accepted to Utah usually end up going to Utah. However, things are crazy different this year because Utah increased the amount of kids they consider "in state". Unfortunately some of these kids who are now considered for one of their "in state" seats will still have to pay out of state tuition (~67K/year). I'd suspect that there will be more acceptances going out this year in order to account these new changes. Thanks for the updates on the Facebook numbers by the way! Congrats to the acceptances!

I'm sorry guys but I'm just quoting what he said on interview day. Whether it's right or wrong based on last years numbers, I don't know. But he said verbatim "we'll be giving out roughly twice the number of acceptances of our class size." I wouldn't purposely give misinformation so please don't crucify me! Just trying to help.
If it makes you feel any better I'm rooting for you to be right

A question for the accepted students: How long did it take to receive the background check email from the Certiphi company after you submitted the form?

I know U of U is a great school, but I honestly can't fathom why any OOS student would pay 67k per year to go here. Hell I probably wouldn't go to Harvard/Stanford if it was 67k + living expenses. For example, I thought University of Vermont was a great school, but didn't apply there because they also had some pretty high OOS tuition. I guess if it was your only acceptance, you'd rather pay that money than not be a doctor, but based on how competitive OOS is for U of U, I would think those acceptances would have other options.

Any OOS who would be paying OOS tuition want to comment as to why you made that decision?
I'm not OOS but I think I have a good guess on why. Kids in their early to mid twenties have no concept of the difference in 50k and 70k. 99% of them have never dealt with those kind of numbers so it just seems like monopoly numbers. 10-12 years down the line they'll be kicking themselves for not taking the $80k difference and going to the cheaper school. This is just what I've seen talking to applicants at school and on interviews.

Any Idaho acceptances yet?

I got it the next day. Another question for accepted students: even though the background check was completed several days ago for me, should it still say "pending" on the application portal for me? Because what's what it says!

Yes. They state that it won't change to complete until utah has reviewed the background check.

I figure that regardless I will have an amazing amount of student loan debt and I have always had the U as one of my top choices even prior to starting an AMCAS file. A lot had to do with the changes they have brought to the entire field of healthcare and their being one of, if not the most, holistic programs in the nation for selecting their applicants (case and point- their painstaking secondary). I guess I felt I would end up going to school with some really amazing people if I had a shooting star's chance to get an interview and then get accepted (I am now grasping the shooting star and holding on for dear life). However, a lot also had to do with the fact that I spend and have spent most of my vacations fishing, camping, hiking, and snowboarding while growing up, and when I had visited Utah in the past it always blew me away and was one of the few other places I could see myself living outside of San Diego. We are all going to have a lot of loans, some more than others, but at the end of the day I would much rather be happy with where I am living, the people I interact with throughout my medical education, and the program I am attending and what it offers its students than to pay a lot less and not feel the same connection. To some this makes sense, to others it won't. I have found what I believe to be a great match for me and the only negative I can see ($67k tuition) is not enough to trump the mountain of positives I feel make it the great fit for me. Money is not my happiness and it never has been. I have always felt that after being financially stable, which does not take a whole lot, happiness is the absolute most important thing. Again, this is what I felt was best for me which is undoubtedly different for others.

Hey, quick question:

Did the portal issue ever get resolved? Does anyone have a new/working link?

Yes. They state that it won't change to complete until utah has reviewed the background check.
I have had my acceptance and background info done since November and my background check still says PENDING. I wouldn't be too concerned about it...Certiphi will contact you if they need any further information (when they wanted to get ahold of me to get some military paperwork they were calling/leaving emails multiple times a day).

That is completely understandable! Sometimes it's worth it to pay the extra for a place that you'll truly be happy at. To some extent I would happily pay a bit more to go to certain schools over others, so the logic makes perfect sense.

Best of luck! People with the passion like you have for the U are the people that the U should be taking for out of state. I hope you get in and have a great 4 years!!!

Here here!

Were you accepted as an Idaho applicant?
Not yet. Still waiting but I wanted to know if they started accepting any to get a feel for the situation. So far I think only 1 or 8 are taken (at least that posted on SDN)

anyone know if people are getting rejections perhaps..? (after having been interviewed) Or are the non 25-30% all waiting to hear back as a bulk?
BASICALLY, should I still keep my hopes up because I haven't heard back yet - I still have a chance? Or am I still going to get rejected out cold in a month...?

I'm in the same boat and I haven't heard anyone being rejected post interview yet. So I'm guessing we'll all get rejected one month from today

I just checked the Facebook group and it looks like there are 70 total people added. Three are admins so I'd venture to say they've accepted a good portion of their class. However, I still think they are far from done sending out acceptances. Good luck everybody!

Does anyone know if it's the 1st or the 15th that they let everyone know? Or is it both?

25% of the class will hear back before the 1st, the rest will hear back by the 15th

25% of the class will hear back before the 1st, the rest will hear back by the 15th
I know that's what they said, but does anybody have an updated count on the Facebook group? Last time I checked, there were close to 80 people in the group. That means there have probably been more than 80 accepted (accounting for those who don't actively use Facebook) and that's way more than the expected 25%. Maybe their wording was "at least" 25% will know before March 15th. Ha! Tricky tricky. 🙂

During my interview day I swear that I heard Dr. Chan say they were going to try and let the majority of the class known by March 1st. But I very well may be incorrect... I'm just really sick of waiting haha.

I was writing down Dr. Chan's exact words during my interview day and I wrote that 25% of those accepted will know by March 1st. But considering the Facebook group has 80ish members already it sounds like that definitely was not true.

I would assume he meant that a minimum of 25% will know by March 1. If they know they want to accept a student then to wait until after March 1 because they've already accepted 25% seems kind of ridiculous to me.

Non rolling admissions seems kind of ridiculous to me

So, for those of you who didn't get offered an interview, did they just drag you along or let you know in a timely manner?
Not complaining, but I haven't heard one way or another since I submitted my secondary back in September and the whole "there's many applicants, please be patient," email.
I want to move on but haven't yet been released from this agony.
Thoughts?

I'm right there with you. Submitted pretty late, but thought I'd get some love from my home state by now....

I'm there with you, are you in state? I'm in state and I thought that my app was good enough for an II... Complete in September and nothing except that email in December. 🙁

I wonder if this cycle was a lot more competitive because they had a larger pool of apps to draw from. I'm a bit stumped.

If you haven't received an interview invite yet, it is pretty unlikely that you will get one. The U usually sends most of their rejections out in mid March. If you are in-state, meet with your advisor and ask them to request feedback from the UUSOM ASAP.

There are currently 82 member in the facebook group. About five of those are staff from the office of admissions. In addition to that, there are 16 people that have been invited to join the group. Based on this I would guess that there are ~60-70 acceptance offers remaining.

Yesterday was their final interview date, so this is unfortunately true for those who have not interviewed.

Only 40 more seems kind of low. Isn't their class size roughly 120? I imagine more than 15ish accepted students are going to matriculate elsewhere.

Yeah that is a good point actually. The handout from interview day said they accepted 161 last year, so there is probably 60-70 acceptances left. Good luck!

How is everyone able to view the Facebook page? I thought it was a closed group. Maybe not?

Also, I'm sorry to those IS applicants who were hoping for an interview this cycle but didn't get one; I think this is going to give Utah something to look at as they prepare for next year's interview cycle, seeing as the greatly increased number of applications is likely going to be their new MO. I have a buddy who got the "sorry about the lack of an interview, but know that we haven't forgotten about you" email back in December and he was dismayed to have never received an II this cycle. I was really bummed for him as well.

This is a new thing for Utah; in my previous two years of applying, I've never heard of such a large number of IS applicants not receiving an II.

I agree. I give the U a D+ for their interview invites this go around. I know of a couple of people who have much better GPA MCAT and EC than me and did not receive and interview while I did. Maybe they bombed their essays but on the surface I think it was a mistake.
