Question, I've had all my app stuff in now for about 2 weeks. My portal says each of my requirements are "complete" but the overall application status is reading "incomplete". Am I mission something here, or is this meaning that they just haven't reviewed it yet?
 
I heard that if you are in state and are above average on 5/7 categories then you automatically get an interview. Can anybody confirm this?

Dude cut the attitude, this is a state school with state funding...they are required to have over 85% of the class with IS students (from what a good friend of mine in Utah told me) and Idaho has no medical school so they also created a contract with the U to give spot to their residents. The school has a clear mission (to create physicians for Utah) and was not created to please OOS students by admitting a lot of them. Don't trash talk school because you don't have a good chance to get in that's kinda pathetic...I'm OOS btw

Not automatically, my friend excelled in 6/7 and took 3 years to get an interview

Some people sound bitter. I understand why. What outdoor loving person doesn't want to go to school in Utah?!? Some of my friends who are attending U of U's med school often post pictures of themselves skiing, rock climbing, hiking, having fun at Lake Powell..... Also, for everyone who loves mountain biking, there are many great places to bike close to the school. You can start with Dry Creek and Bobsled which are within walking distance of the school. Make sure to say hi when you see me on them.
 
I'm from Utah and don't want to go to school here. Its brown and dead and it is hot AF in the summer and cold AS in the winter. Yeah there are a lot of outdoorsy things to do but it's usually too freakin hot or cold to do them. Also lake powell is closer to the Vegas schools than the U. The air quality can be horrible due to fires and the inversion and traffic in and out of SL valley is always a joke. The population is more homogeneous than Nazi Germany and we have no professional sports teams except the lame Jazz who haven't been great since I was 5. And my inlaws live here. Don't worry OOS applicants, you aren't missing much here unless you like skiing (too expensive, cold and painful for me).

Did anyone else get an email reminding them to complete the secondary despite having submitted it?

The Jazz have many young players and by the end of last year were one of the top teams statistically. They will make the playoffs. Real salt lake is awesome if you're into soccer. The U plays in one of the premier conferences in the NCAA in football, basketball, and most other Olympic sports. no nfl, mlb, or nhl teams, but who can afford that in med school anyway?

I got one a few weeks ago, and emailed about it. They said that I got the reminder erroneously, and my application is indeed complete.
 
There is a sheet with statistics from last years admissions cycle posted outside the admissions office. I believe it said that they accepted 160 students last year

After the all-star break and the Enes Kenter trade, the Jazz were #1 defensively in the NBA, they went 19-10 for 6th best in the NBA, and they are the second youngest team in the league. The Jazz beat all those teams at least once except the clippers (4, 5, 6, and 18 point losses). I would hold on to your money. I don't know, though. It should at least be a fun season.
 
As much as I love the testosterone fueled rantings of a "sports addled" mind, we may want to confine this thread to subjects relevant to the UUSOM application process. Haha 😉

Couldn't agree more. It would be nice if med students were taught these things IN med school instead of trying to figure out how to over come it afterwards. Hopefully this article will shine light on this problem and get it emphasized more around the nation. Super interesting stuff.
 
So where Utah isn't rolling admissions, is there an advantage to interviewing later in season?

Whaaaa?! Utah isn't rolling admissions? Does that mean that they interview everyone, then make decisions and notify everyone all at once? If so when is that day?
 
They don't interview everyone or they would be interviewing thousands of people.. it just means they make a decision on who they accept at a single time instead of sending out acceptances throughout the year. (march from what I understand).

Just to second this^^. The U of U doesn't release any acceptances until March. they interview everyone they want and then make their acceptances, waitlist, and rejections known. Super lame in my opinion. But it is what it is. With that said, I can't see interviewing later hurt you at all. But again, just my opinion.

Oh sorry I meant "they interview everyone they are interested in interviewing, and then they send all the decisions at once." If a medical school interviewed everyone it would be great for the local economy lol. Well that is interesting I had no idea that was the case. I bet that just because they accept everyone at the same time doesnt mean they make all the decisions at once. They probably just keep a running list. Probably no advantage to interviewing earlier or later

Good call. The running list makes sense. Just wish we would get some news soon. Interview Invites should be coming soon if they are having interviews end of September
 
That is not exactly true. While they release most of their acceptances in March they have been shifting towards being fully rolling. I knew some people last year who got acceptances earlier in the cycle.
 
^yup it's really like a modified non-rolling haha. They will accept some along the way with the majority going out towards the end. Don't quote me on this but I seem to remember hearing a change for last year's admission that makes it slightly more disadvantageous to interview later but I can't remember what it was... Honestly though probably not much difference between early/late interview I suspect.

Has anyone received an interview for this school yet? When should the first batch of interview invites get sent out, does anyone know??
 
Last year they were at the end of August. Who knows. They probably have a ton more applicants this year with the lower requirement of LOR's?
 
Hello, all!
I just wanted to "chime in" real quick about my experience last cycle, although I know that anecdotal evidence isn't always that helpful when considering medical school applications. I was a true OOS with absolutely no ties to the state of Utah, but was lucky enough to be offered a position in the Class of 2019. Spend as much time as you can with their secondary (HUGE) and if offered an interview, prepare well! I can tell you that the UUSOM is an amazing program-one that I am constantly proud to be a part of. Research opportunities are endless, the curriculum style is amazing and the faculty truly want you to succeed. Good luck, everyone and I hope to see you next year!!
