2015-2016 University of Washington Application Thread

For MSTP applicants: apparently the mail they sent home to me regarding the status change said that they didn't get enough applications for MSTP so they aren't offering it this year...? At least that's what I got from my mom over the phone but waiting for her to send me an actual photo of the letter to confirm

Interesting. But it's so early in the app cycle, far too early to know how many MSTP applicants there will be.

Yeah not to mention UW is an amazing research institution, I just can't imagine them not having any MSTPs this year. It seems illogical.

yeah after revisiting the UW website, it appears that its the standard 12 months. i didn't realize it was that cheap, awesome.

Not the whole story. You have to prove you didn't move here just to go to school. Part of it for undergrad at least is full time work + full course load. They make it verrrrry hard to get residency.

Def. call and talk to the residency people however

Yeah that's exactly what I thought too >___> If there are any other MSTP applicants who got a secondary or have any other news, feel free to correct me.

Ah nevermind lol the message of the mail was completely lost in translation (immigrant parents ftw) - but it was basically a rejection letter ahah 😛 still don't know exactly what it says because my dad seems to have lost the letter but he was able to tell me the gist more clearly than my mom LOL

Got it. Super sorry to hear that--but on the bright side next week should be a good one for IIs!

I didn't not get into UW, but the one bit of advice I have for Idahoans is to be very careful/deliberate with your residency/state of residence. Proving you are an "Idahoan" for WWAMI is rather complex and involves quite a few documents from either you or your parent(s).

I was reviewing the steps and documentation that they require. How early should I turn this in? I have lived in Idaho for the past 18 years so I am not worried about not qualifying, but I did just turn in my primaries yesterday. Is this something I should work on immediately so there are no hiccups?

Sorry to hear that - Did this happen after you submitted what they call the preliminary application?

I'm OOR and completed the mission statement a while back. I received the secondary, and noticed that one of the questions in the secondary is exactly the same as the one in the mission statement. Both ask: How do your experiences match the mission and values of the University of Washington School of Medicine?

Should I copy and paste my mission statement? Or should I say: refer to mission statement? Or should I write a whole new one (which wouldn't make sense, but it's an option).

Any help would be appreciated! 🙂

I believe the email said you can just reuse (i.e copy/paste) the mission statement.

There is no rush. Idaho doesn't have a deadline (at least last year they didn't). But you should try to get it submitted close in time to your secondary. And honestly, UW seemed like it would let you turn in a document "late" if you had a legit reason and emailed them. And I know for a FACT that turning things in late for Idaho WWAMI doesn't put you at a disadvantage, so take your time to do it well.

There isn't anything, per se, that you should work on. If you are financially dependent on your parent's, the ID residency office will need THEIR documents, not yours. I'm just going to say that it was a lot of work for me, but I'm independent of my parents, so I had a lot more to hunt down.

Any IS hear anything yet? or have most been OOS?

Does UW screen for secondaries based on residency? I'm a MI resident who moved to WA two months ago (I know this probably won't count as "strong ties to the state" but hey better chance of getting in if I apply)
Other than that my LizzyM is 77 so I don't think it's stats as someone suggested.

They clearly state on their site the stats they use to screen.

I am an OOS applicant. I was verified early June, but my application wasn't complete until my MCAT scores came out on July 21. I received an initial email stating that they had received my application, but it would not be considered complete until they had my MCAT scores. I haven't heard anything since the initial contact email. Anyone else experience this?

Just wanted to share that i applied early june and received my secondary on 7.6.15. My MCAT was also released on the 21st and i submitted my secondary on the 20th. I received an email on the 24th saying my application was complete. I'm IS

@BABSstudent is it true that the UW is changing their 1st year curriculum for the entering 2015 class from lecture based to problem based learning? More group work and discussions?
Thanks!

This is true. There will still be lectures but they are shifting to shorter lectures, online videos and doing group problems in small groups. The first two years have also been shortened to 18 months to give more time for clinicals, research, board studying and maybe even just general time off.

@BABSstudent
Thank you for the info! I'm applying to schools with this type of curriculum, and I was having trouble finding general information about specific schools that are implementing this.

I'm an OOR like most of the people that are waiting to hear back on their Mission Statement submissions - submitted on 7/14, but the confirmation email said the review could take up to four weeks, so I guess most of us are about at the four week point.

I'm curious what they consider strong ties to the state of WA, given what some of the other OOR applicants have been rejected for. I grew up in Oregon and am completing undergrad in Spokane, WA (actually only a few blocks from their WWAMI campus over here) and my mission statement submission talked about my experiences growing up in a rural area and working with the various populations in Spokane. I'd be interested to see their process given how many others have already moved on from pre-II to IIs.

Did i miss something? I've seen several people talk about mission statements, but i don't recall having a mission statement. Is this only for OOS applicants? Or only MD/PhD aplicants?

not to be pessimistic but i have an eery feeling that all of us who submitted the mission statement as of a month ago without any response are probably clumped into one massive "out of region" rejection pile
Agreed. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a glimmer of hope left, though.

Will our secondary applications not be completed/reviewed until the residency classification office confirms that we are residents (in-state)?

I have some questions for the residency office that I emailed over a week ago and haven't heard anything back yet so I cannot prepare everything until I get those questions answered. 🙁

From what I understand they won't review your application until all residency stuff is taken care of. If they haven't answered your email I would suggest you give them a call. I called several times to clarify things about the residency classification and they were way helpful and nice. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I've had my secondary done for weeks, but they are still reviewing my residency 😵 stupid random residency verifications

From what I've heard, yes. You gotta get through the residency verification before being complete and looked at 😵

On that note, I found going to their office is SO MUCH faster than email! And if you bring most of your documentation, you may turn it in right after they answer your questions.

Same, submitted 2ndary 8/7 and received the completed email the 14th

Edit : should prolly point out I go to UW currently, so they "should" have already known I was instate. I don't know if that effects it or not.

Same here, I'm still waiting on residency verification and it's been about 4 weeks since I sent the papers in.
