Any fellow Alaskans up in here? I hate how late the interview dates are for us! (Feb 1-4th) Exciting to read about others' experiences though! Congrats to everyone and keep the good news coming
It just means that you have chances to practice interviewing at other schools before UW. You are only competing against other Alaskans, so it doesn't matter how late in the year Alaska WWAMI interviews. And, if you're holding acceptances at other schools, it takes the pressure off the UW interview.

Just background- my acceptance was a glitch with the new system. I was supposed to be accepted, but not this early. Moral of the story- they must have had their first Excom meeting and more acceptances should be coming very soon! Good luck to all!

Interesting. So did you not get a call then? Was it on the portal?

How do you know your notice of acceptance was a glitch? Did you get a email through the portal or did a new tab open up? You did not get a call?

A tab opened up on the portal that read as if it was an email, but I had no email or phone call. There was a phone number for questions and I called it and found out that my tab shouldn't have opened yet, but that I indeed was accepted.

Thanks for clarifying! And congrats!!!

So wait. Did anyone else get that "are you sure you don't want to go to Spokane" email? If so, have you been offered an interview already as well?

Sorry to harp on this but I'm still having an internal conflict about whether or not to change my primary to Spokane. I had said no preference before with the secondary (other than a slight preference to interview in Seattle because I live here, but no preference for where I'd like to attend) but I had been leaning towards it and TRUST internally. I decided against TRUST for now but practicing in/being from a MUA is my whole bag but I was thinking there was a good chance I'd end up in Spokane anyway.

Now this email is making it sound like I actually have to designate Spokane as my primary choice if I'm interested in going there? But I'm afraid if I switch now 1) it will look like I'm desperate and going for the smaller competition and 2) I feel like the fact that I'm not applying for TRUST will work against me ("if you're so interested in that then why aren't you going for TRUST?") and 3) I may be less competitive compared to the other Spokane-interested candidates for what they may be looking for out there compared to Seattle and what they're looking for, since I don't have a ton of rural related anything.

Then I'm afraid that if I say I want Seattle now that it sounds like Seattle interviews are ONLY for Seattle (and not both like I thought) then I won't be competitive compared to all the fanciest flashiest Seattle candidates and won't get in that way either. Argh. I wish I could just interview with everyone and have them put me where they think I belong :/

Don't stress about this. Check the WA Foundational Site Preference. The UWSOM policy is clearly explained. "Regardless of your preference, the UWSOM Office of Admissions reserves the right to match applicants to either Spokane or Seattle. Decisions will be made based on space availability and individual personal and professional circumstances. Applicants will submit a statement explaining the reasons behind their preference upon acceptance to the UWSOM." It seems like a straightforward way of saying they will tell you where you are going after you are admitted. 🙂

II yesterday, 10/26. IS WA/Seattle applicant.
Submitted 10/14, complete email 10/22.
Super excited! I was quite late at pretty much all of my schools due to LOR problems, and UW did me a solid by getting back to me quickly so I don't start to panic too much. Waiting on that scheduling email now.

And rejected. Not too surprised - this was my biggest reach given the extreme difficulty for OOSers.

How long after receiving an interview invite should I wait for the scheduling email before contacting admissions?

For me it took 12 days from the initial invite to scheduling email. Then it was an additional week after I selected a date for them to email back to confirm.

Took me a month! They won't forget about you, so there's no need to contact them unless you have a major, long-term trip planned that they would need to be aware of.

i guess i was extremely lucky? i got the scheduling email the day after i got my II

Thanks for the reassurance. I'm nearing a month so I guess I should focus on how exciting it is that I'll be hearing from them soon! ;-)

Does that mean the EXCOM has already met? Shouldn't decision be going out then?

That's after they've decided to accept you, though. That's a different issue. During the interview process they're not comparing every applicant at both sites to every other applicant like it's totally open, so I'm now wondering if I fit better at one or the other for admissions purposes.

How long did it take between the interview invite notification and the follow up email?

I'm at about five weeks out and still waiting :/ I've emailed about needing to request time off work soon but don't have a response yet to that either.

Honestly, I feel like you are over thinking this. If you actually want to go to Spokane, then you should interview in Spokane to show you want to do that. They're not going to think you're desperate. The school would not hold it against someone to switching their preference to Spokane after they announced the change in the interview process and also asked people if anyone wanted to change their preference. That would be pretty shady and unethical of them to hold that against someone, and they're not trying to trick you.

Same thing with the TRUST program..... .....if they really have a concern for why you didn't apply for it, they will ask you directly and you can explain yourself. You don't have to have had rural medical experience to say that you're interested in it....being from a MUA and also understanding the challenges of MUA is good reason enough if you explain why it interests you. Also they're definitely not going to expect (or even want) EVERYONE in Spokane to be interested in MUA. They will still want a diversity of people and interests in that group, and they also know that not everyone ends up practicing in the field/place that they thought they would. Spokane itself is not even MUA.

Let's say that even IF some of these hypothetical things you bring up might be slightly true, admissions in Seattle is still probably going to be tougher because of the sheer numbers of people that want to go there. Finally, I wouldn't look at it if you fit better for "admissions purposes" or for "what will get me in" but rather for where YOU want to go to medical school. That is what ultimately makes the best fit, and if you really want to go to Spokane, that will come through in your interview and only help you.

I know what it's like as an applicant thinking that admissions people will think "x, y, and z" if I say or do "a, b, c" but in reality they're just looking if you're a decent person with good people skills, if you know what you're getting yourself into, and if you know really know why medicine is a good fit for you.

Any Idaho residents here? Unsure when to expect word on interview invites/pre-interview rejections. I've heard as late as mid-December?

In what instances will applicants hear back in the days following their interview? Are some excom members more senior and able to bypass the group meeting to determine whether to admit? Just curious, heard some stories of applicants being called the next day.

Shouts out to all my fellow November interviewees. Bout that time!

I know I am, haha. I've just heard a ton of stories of other WA applicants (with similar backgrounds to me) being rejected for reasons just like this-- fit related reasons that seems extremely mild or were odd and unpredictable. So it is really bothering me, I could easily see "you aren't the right fit for this site" turning into a rejection despite everything else making sense.

Also I'm home sick right now and I have a lot of time to obsess on this so there's also that @_@ And I can't get my interview scheduled for some reason and that's really getting me wound up.

There are Excom members who have been on the committee for quite a few years, but they have NO MORE "juice" to get someone admitted. ALL accepted applicants have to be voted upon by the committee. Ones called the next day were either stellar applicants and their Excom member attended the meeting the following day in Seattle or they happened to interview on Thursday at a WWAMI site and the Excom meeting was the next day.

Hmmm this is interesting because what happened for me was I got an email that explained how they put me in the group to interview in Spokane because I had originally put "No preference" on my Foundations preference section, and all those with II who wrote no preference are all now just being interviewed and considered for Spokane. It sounds like they still gave you a choice even though you also put no preference!

Either way, I'm not complaining. One of the reasons I put no preference was because both Foundations sites have pros and I'd love to be at either. I'm genuinely excited about getting to explore Spokane come the Winter!

Did any day other than December 10th become available today for Seattle? I went to select it but in the six minutes (no joke) it took me to grab and upload a photo, it was gone.

I heard there was also December 9th, but that was yesterday around 2PM. (At that point both the 9th and the 10th were available)
It is important to note that there are only 6 to 12 spots per interview day, so they do fill up quickly. My day had just 9 people.

Yeah. I just got the email to get into the portal today so I didn't realize you had to have a photo BEFORE you could pick a date and did not have one ready to go. I got one right away but I still managed to miss it by a matter of minutes. It was there and then it wasn't.

I'm really frustrated, even if I get a date next week I needed to have it scheduled before November. Not sure how I'm going to work this out with my boss now, it's going to be a Thing. They are very strict about this and aren't super impressed by "there is literally no way for me to schedule this yet."

I'm sorry to hear that 🙁
I can imagine scheduling around work is no fun. Hopefully your boss will get it and be flexible.

Thanks 🙁 Unfortunately no, I actually had to go up the management chain to get the day off for my MCAT earlier this year. I requested it and got approved months in advance, then they told me two days before that they didn't think it was that important and they wanted me to come in. I have no idea how I'm going to finangle getting a new day approved after the deadline knowing how they are with this.

And that's assuming more December days even open up D: I'm feeling really stupid and defeated right now. If I'd just noticed the email earlier in the day I'd be fine right now.

Don't beat yourself up. If anything, be proud you're not on your phone 24/7 waiting for emails.
I'm surprised your job is so inflexible. Can you not swap shifts with someone else if you miss the deadline to take a day off? Or if they're that inflexible, take a sick day and screw them?

Thing is, I talked to admissions about my scheduling needs and they told me I was likely to get the email late this week. So I even knew it might be coming, but I didn't realize I had to mad rush to grab a spot so I only checked my email a couple times a day. I have a lot of regrets right now.

They are steely inflexible with time away from work year round but especially this time of year when everyone is asking for it. I'm gonna see what day I eventually get and deal with it then.

Nothing is stopping you from getting "sick"! 😛

On a serious note, my interview is coming up soon. Anyone have any tips they can offer?!

I'd say just relax and be yourself. It's a very relaxed interview. Be prepared to answer "why medicine" and try to show empathy in the role play. Know your app. Know what your research is about if you've done some. Be enthusiastic. Pretty much just standard interview advice but there you go 🙂

Wanna hear the punchline? ... It's a doctor's office. *badum tss*

But hey, window into our future right? 😛

Can't say from experience but what everyone's told me is to just be a normal person, if that makes any sense. Just be you like a normal conversation.

I mean...technically you wouldn't be lying if you said you had a doctor's appointment. You are going to meet with doctors on interview day.

Anyone here know when the next excom meeting will be?
