2015-2016 University of Washington Application Thread

Still in limbo after doing the mission statment back in sept. I'm OOR so not sure what's up timing wise. I got the email back in November saying 8-10 weeks to review them with a secondary offer or rejection at that point. Pushing into week 12. When did you submit your mission statement or are you in state?

OOR.... received complete email Sep 25th. Now that I look back though, OOS tuition is insane. I suppose that's another form of commitment to IS and regional matriculants

On interview day they stressed that they try to give scholarships to all OOR accepted students to make the cost of attendance the same as the IS-ers. They are usually able to cover all OOR students, but each year depends on funds available and how many accepted OOR students actually matriculate.

Wow! That's incredible. Financial aid has been the most mind-bogglingly indecipherable part of this whole shebang as far as I'm concerned

I just contacted the office of admissions. They told me that it's safe to say that they won't be sending out any more decisions until January. Interviewed last Wednesday as an instate student. Now I join the waiting game too.

So funny story.... I received a secondary application today. No joke. Anyone else in my boat or am I all alone?? Great school, but I'm just staring at this thing like where did it come from and is it real? I'll probably call tomorrow and ask if it's even worth filling out, only to be eagerly assured that yes, of course I still have a shot! Because what else would they say.
I got a secondary about 5 days ago and just submitted today! I am so excited for the opportunity! I was worried I wouldn't get one. I grew up in WA and my entire family lives there! I am the lonely one in FL and want to come home! **Crossing my fingers for an interview!!!

Did you interview in Seattle?

I remember they mentioned something about updates during the interview. Unfortunately, I was a bit nervous and can't remember what they actually said. It looks like BabsStudent sent updates when he applied, and that worked out well. Can anybody kindly remind me what was mentioned during the interview, or if you have successfully sent an update to UW?

At my interview day they said the only update they want is fall semester/quarter grades. They won't accept any update for activities, awards, new jobs, and won't accept letters of interest/intent. It seemed like the grade part isn't really optional either, I got the impression if you're enrolled in courses this semester you must send them your grades.

"EDIT: Hmm, looks like i was able to find it after all. According to this link it was August 24th in 2015. Assuming it'll be something similar in 2016. Guess that means i won't be returning to the playa this summer :'(

No playa for me either 🙁 what years did you go?

What is suc? Is it like a wailist?

Not a wait list, it just tells you you're still in the pool of post-interview applicants that can either be accepted, wait listed, or rejected at any moment (or by March).

So nothing groundbreaking, just another level of purgatory. 🙂

No playa for me either 🙁 what years did you go?

I'm glad you got the reference! 2011 and 2013 were my two years. And you? Was hoping that, with UW's late start date, it would work, but doesn't look like it.

I went in '14 and '15. Wasn't planning on going next year even if I didn't get in.

Interviewing here in a few weeks! Anyone know when to expect a decision following the interview? I hope we don't have to wait until March! 🙁

Seattle foundation site? You'll hear back within a month, but that could be a SUC (Still Under Consideration) email. From what I've seen people usually hear back within 2 weeks (I heard back two days later), but a lot of people get SUC'd. If you happen to join the SUC crowd, your application is reconsidered at every adcom meeting (every 2 weeks, or every month - hard to tell). During each meeting you can either get a SUC continuation, acceptance, or rejection. In March you'll find out if you're accepted, waitlisted, or rejected.

In short, anytime between the day after your interview and the end of March.

The frustration lies in the lack of transparency. I gave a second interview and was informed that I would get a decision in a week. I got an SUC email yesterday for the Spokane cohort, the Spokane cohort doesn't have an SUC list. Turns out they actually didn't get to reviewing my app at the last excom meeting- according to whom I spoke with. The puppet master lives on, purgatory is real. Just in case anyone is in the same boat, I FEEL YOU.

@Fedekz, so you're saying this isn't an appropriate update letter?

I actually volunteered in an elementary school to use those cool scissors that cut in wavy lines to hand make the card. I even signed my name in the limited edition metallic silver crayon. Results: SUC email 12 hours later.

Jumping in on this thread late in the game...
In-state, complete 9/1, II mid-September, interviewed in Seattle 12/2, complete silence since... Boo!

Relatives are getting antsy to buy med school related Christmas gifts, including a stethoscope. Does UW pay for the stethoscope they give at the stethoscope ceremony? And what brand/model has it been in the past?

The school buys you a super nice stethoscope.

Quick Question: For those of you who had morning interviews (mine is schedule for 8AM), were you allowed to leave after lunch (noon)? I'm trying to plan logistics of my flight and would very much appreciate your feedback! (I did read thru the interview webpage but didn't see a definitive answer)

You have the opportunity to attend a class in the afternoon. I believe at around 1pm if you had a morning interview you can leave but don't quote me on it.

Thanks Fedekz! If anyone else could possibly confirm that morning interviewers can leave at 1PM, I would be 😀.

Yes you can leave right after lunch. I had a morning interview as well. I stayed for a bit though to go to two lectures that day, and left at 230 I think.

I also received a SUC Friday after interviewing in Spokane. My question is how do you know that they don't have a Spokane SUC list??

We got back from lunch around 12:30, then we were free to do what we pleased (leave, explore, attend classes), they just ask that you complete a short survey on the computer about your interview day.

Also, anyone who interviewed in Seattle this month hear anything? The complete silence is unsettling, but they may just be waiting...?

Chiming in- I interviewed early Dec as well, was hoping to hear back before the holidays but it looks like we will have to wait. Stella had mentioned at the info session that we would hear back with some kind of feedback (+/-/SUC) in 3 weeks, but it makes sense for the delay with the holidays. Hopefully we all get positive news ASAP- this is my #1 school and everyone was so nice at my interview! 🙂

I submitted the mission statement Oct. 12th and was finally sent a secondary today. So excited!!! I waited 11 weeks. OOR as well.

Also, I interviewed on the first days of interviews available for Spokane on December 3rd. Its a little difficult for me to believe they really do not have a SUC list and haven't reviewed my application in the last 2.5 weeks.... Lol I would assume they would have a similar admission process to the Seattle cohort.

Interviewing mid January, seriously cannot wait!

Did the UW bioethics website help anyone else prepare for their role-play?

Thanks!

It helped because the case scenarios provided opportunities for me to practice answering open-ended questions. Although my actual role-play didn't involve the sort of dilemmas presented on the site, I definitely found the prep useful

OOR, was offered a secondary today. Hope this helps out the people still in limbo with their applications. They sent me an email saying no secondaries will he given out past December just FYI.

Hey all! I'll be interviewing in about a week and I was wondering if anyone could shed some insight on what the role play is like? Is it just answering opened ended ethical questions, or will there be an actual role play in which I pretend to be a medical student and the interviewer pretends to be a patient? The website is pretty vague, and I don't wanna walk in blindsided. Thanks!

@BABSstudent maybe you can shed some light...what happens now after getting in? I'm freaking i'll miss the Certiphi email or not get my immunizations/docs in on time. I keep going over the checklist but the dates are june/july. is there anything time consuming I should look into getting it handled now for matriculation?

Technically not in Woodinville but I live less than 5 minutes away from the whiskey company. I moved to the Eastside 5 years ago and met my husband in Woodinville so Woodinville is pretty special 🙂

@timsk @idontknowwhatnametopick so are we all three from the "east side"? I live in Duvall, so Woodinville is so close to me! Are you guys commuting or thinking of moving into town?

The only thing that is time sensitive is responding to the email saying you are accepted. Everything else is pretty chill. Just stay organized and make sure you have all the documents and don't put it off to the last moment. The shots thing actually takes about two-three weeks to finish because of the two step PPD, getting ready a chest X-ray if that is positive, and getting your titers. If you end up needing an extra shot that can also add time.

But my biggest advice is to relax and enjoy the last little bit of freedom you have. Take a vacation. Quit working as soon as you can afford to (unless you absolutely, 100% love your job and are okay with continuing to work). The first two years are tough but not impossible. However, you don't get much free time. Third year is super tough with no breaks, always being judged/graded, moving every six weeks. I hear fourth year is the promised land after interviewing and sending in the rank list. I'll update you all on that part in a year from now.

I haven't gotten in yet (and might not). However my husband and I own our house in Kirkland so I think I'll be commuting. I'm not too excited about it, but financially it makes no sense to move to Seattle when we have a house in the area.
I did it with the bus for undergrad and it was doable. It's just a hassle. But we also could get a nice carpool group going, at least for the first year and a half since we'll be on the same schedule.
Hopefully there will be enough time to figure these things out.
All the east side people could also meet up at the park and ride in the morning and hang out on the bus to the U district 😛 that would be fun.

I live in Seattle now and will be staying here when starting school. While not having to pay rent, and thus being able to save significant money, if i lived with my parents in woodinville does have it's appeal, there's no way i'd survive with my sanity in check if i did that. I may suck it up and do so during summer to save some money, however.

But seattle has gotten sooo expensive recently that it'll be a hard time finding something affordable and at least semi desirable. Moving out of my new, stylish apartment in pioneer square will be one of the hardest changes accompanying me quitting my job. Am hoping to find a place with some other M1s to rent and cut down on expenses. Speaking of, does UW do a second look weekend? If so, do they at all help incoming students identify their classmates that are looking to find apartments together? I know some schools do, but have not heard anything about that for UW.

All that said, i'm all in favor of y'all keeping your houses out on the east side (although duvall is pretty deep!), as long as you invite your fellow classmates over for parties and bbqs so we can remember what hanging out on grass is like!

If I end up going to UW I'll have a BBQ party just for you 😉

UW definitely has second look and apparently they give a lot more info at that point than they did on interview day.

@idontknowwhatnametopick you definitely got my indirect hint about carpooling! I usually commute to redmond from Duvall, and did the commute for about 2 years during undergrad and it wasn't too shabby since I can take one bus out of redmond to UWSOM. Still, if we find other east-siders it will be nice to carpool or at least be able to take late buses home in groups. The new "private" yet bigger bus lanes on 520 are scary!! I recall being a little on edge those very late nights alone on evergreen stop in the highway, but at least I could see the cars passing by. This new bus only lane is scary and secluded!

@timsk ummm bbqs and chill hangouts will have to be done if we all get in and attend! Also, second look is march25th (day after my bday soooo convenient). I will be attending to befriend my potential classmates and learn more about what we will have to get done for matriculation (etc). Also, pioneer square??!! VERY jealous! One thing I've always wanted to do is live downtown for a bit during my 20s!

I've considered moving closer to campus because I know the commute makes late night study sessions on campus impossible. It's not fun getting home at 4 am to be awake at 5:30am to make it to campus early :\ But the prices!! -_- I wouldn't look to spend too much on rent considering my financial status during medical school. 🙁

Carpool is awesome 😉

I interviewed in Seattle and after getting accepted I checked "firmly accept" with my preference for the foundations phase in Seattle. Does anyone know the chances of getting the preferred placement? I am a little worried they would place me in Spokane...does this happen often/at all?

Thanks!!! I am getting super excited!! 🙂

Same here... II after complete 12/21. I admit I was skeptical when I received a secondary in late December
I was holding my breath since I am OOR. One of my dream schools too! Very happy with the quick turnaround. Congrats to you as well jmulz!

Yeah given my experience elsewhere as a very late applicant (took mcat late August) I kinda figured I'd be lucky to hear back by March. So glad I talked myself into it. Congrats to you too and good luck!

Hey there! The role play is a little weird. So the interviewer will inform you that the role play is going to start and you have to pretend that you are a doctor in a certain scenario. So for example, my role play last year had to do with an L&I claim. The patient had injured himself at work but did not want to go back to work and wanted me to write him a note saying that he was unfit for work. Another example I have heard is a patient is non-english speaking and you have bad news to tell the patient. The family members are there to interpret but they say that they do not want to tell the patient because it will cause her more harm than good to know such news. And then you have to talk with the family about why they don't want to and the such. You essentially pretend you are a doctor for 5 minutes.

Anyway, the main things that they are looking for are that you are interrogative. Ask questions! I hope that helped! :-D

This may have been posted before, but I don't feel like digging through 22 pages of thread... Does anyone know if your status changes on the portal if you are accepted or not?

The moment I was accepted, you get an extra tab on the UWSOM portal (kind of how it occurred when you got an interview), labeled OFFER or something of the sort.
