2015-2016 University of Washington Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The moment I was accepted, you get an extra tab on the UWSOM portal (kind of how it occurred when you got an interview), labeled OFFER or something of the sort.
Sorry if I missed this, but when did you get the offer? Before or after the holiday?

Has anyone heard back about acceptance or SUC in January yet? I interviewed mid December for Seattle campus and am patiently waiting. How do they notify you for the SUC?

Email.
I haven't heard anything since the 11/24 SUC, and I don't think anybody has reported SUCs since then. There have been a few acceptances since then though.

I also interviewed in mid December but haven't heard anything. I don't think UW is back from their break yet, so my guess is we will start hearing back when they are back in session?

The undergrads started again on Monday. Not sure about UWSOM but I imagine they did too?

Oh I must be mistaken then - I only thought they haven't started because my boss said something about that. I stand corrected! Hopefully they will be having an EXCOM meeting soon and hear back 🙂

The EXCOMs might not have started again yet though. Who knows.

About how long after submitting the secondary did you guys hear back?

I don't know about the Seattle pool, but I am fairly certain that there were interviews in Spokane today and continuing tomorrow. And I know for sure that there are interviews on the 11th and 12th in Spokane. In comparison with the round of interviews they did in December in Spokane, I am anticipating that the Spokane candidates will find out late this upcoming week... but who knows, it's all just speculation.

I'm in state and it took 7 weeks for me to hear back after the secondary, so don't worry too much if it's taking a while

Heart stopped for a second after seeing that recent email. At least we have an idea of when we will hear back now.

Dear Applicant,

We have received a number of questions about when you will hear from us regarding your application status, so we wanted to update everyone on the application process.

Currently, our office has been working hard to schedule and support the regional interviews. We appreciate your patience during this busy time. A status update on your application will be available after the second week of Spokane interviews (no later than January 22nd).

Once again, thank you for your understanding and continued interest in our program.

EDIT: Non-TRUST Washington interviews for applicants interested in studying at the Spokane campus:
December 3, 4, 7, 8, 2015 and January 7, 8, 11, 12, 2016

Hey! I interviewed 11/12 and got the call the 11/23 the Monday after the EXCOM meeting. I know someone heard back 11/20 from same interview time.

Thanks! Were you able to see that before the call?

Actually, I never checked to be honest. But I got the EMAIL before the call (so I assume yes). The email I got in the AM and the call in the PM same day. I hadn't checked my email though until after the call came in.

Do you guys know roughly how long it'll take for interview confirmation? I'm OOS so I only had the 2/22 or 2/23 to choose from. It's been almost 2 weeks since I chose an interview date and I'm itching to buy my flight!!

I first got my II on 11/10 and I requested an interview date on 11/11. On 12/01 they informed me that the interview date that I had selected was now full and I had to select another. I submitted this on 12/02 and received conformation of this date on 12/21. I am IS though. I hope that helped!! Good luck!

I'm IS and it took me 1 day for confirmation back in Oct. This is probably what they meant when they said that they're busy working on scheduling interviews haha.

This might be a dumb question... I received an email saying that my matriculation was contingent on my meeting all admission requirements. I thought that I already had met all admission requirements since I graduated last year, but now I'm worried. Is there a way to know if there is still something missing?

Did you already receive an interview invitation?

Interviewed yesterday! I think it went well!! But I don't know! I'm so nervous about previous stories I have heard where they thought that the interview went well and then they didn't end up getting in! Ah! Does anyone have some input? For those of you who have gotten in.. how did you feel about your interview afterward?

I am IS and it took 18 days to receive my interview confirmation.

I'm pretty sure they just want you to make sure that you've passed your background checks and completed these: http://www.uwmedicine.org/education/md-program/admissions/applicants/course-requirements

I thought mine didn't go well. It was clear that my interviewers didn't want to give any clues as to how i as doing because they were pretty stone-faced throughout the entire session. My EXCOM member kept looking up at the clock and used body cues to suggest that my answers were either too long or just sucked. I know many people i interviewed with felt the same way. I dont think there are a lot of students who come out feeling really good about it so i'm sure its a good sign if you did.

II today! OOS submitted secondary 12/30. How long did it take to receive an E-mail to schedule an interview?

Accepted last Friday!

I'm trying to accept the offer on the portal, but every time I submit my acceptance of their offer, the page just seems to refresh. Is there a way that I can know that UW received my acceptance? Has this happened to anyone else?

IS? Seattle or Spokane/WWAMI interview? When did you interview? Sorry for all the questions, I have been dying to hear back since the first week of Dec for ANY kind of update haha.

I believe this happened to me as well. You may have already done this, but you need to complete the other sections before being able to accept, including that essay. The way it is ordered on the portal it makes it look like you can do the acceptance first, then complete the other sections, but the other sections need to be completed first. Hopefully that helps.

There is an essay to complete after you are accepted??

I understand the need for any kind of update! I am from one of the WWAMI states. I interviewed last week and heard back two days later, so it's probably a little different for me. I hope you hear something soon!

I did everything. I just checked and above the acceptance options it says that "You have accepted the offer." Is that all it says for you? Did you have to pay anything for the acceptance?

Thanks for responding. I thought you might say not Seattle, as it seems like the few acceptances since early Dec have been in the regional sites. Congrats!

Accepted last Friday!

That's so exciting!! That is awesome how fast of a turn around they are doing this year! How did you feel after your interview? Where did you interview? I interviewed on Monday in Spokane and I am so anxious to hear from them! I am being pretty neurotic about checking SDN and my UWSOM portal... I know I should just relax.. but that is obviously easier said than done! :pompous:

Oh sorry, i misunderstood you. Yeah, that's all it takes to accept! No payment required. Congrats on the acceptance!

There is. It's just a short one explaining why you want the site that you chose.

Thanks! I felt pretty good after my interview. I was worried that I had talked too fast, and I had moments where I didn't feel as articulate as I wanted to be, but I thought my answers were good. I bet you will hear back soon! I don't know if it is the same for Spokane, but I was told on my interview day that the EXCOM meets after every week of regional interviews to decide on applicants. It seems to be true because my turnaround was so fast. Hoping you get news soon! (Also, I completely understand how hard it is to relax. I tried to drown myself in watching Game of Thrones so I wouldn't think about the admissions process while waiting for my decision.)

Thanks for the response! I'm relieved to hear that everything's all right! Congrats on your acceptance, too!!

Thanks for the reply! Yea, I feel really good about my interview! I mean we laughed and I think I did really well on many topics. There are of course some things that I would have added/changed but I don't think they were super substantial.. ugh.. I'm just so anxious! They told us that we should find out between the 22nd and the end of the month, but I have heard from multiple people in person and on SDN that we will find out much earlier than that... I hope so!! I'll definitely keep you all posted! :-D

What one wears is not a big deal as long as it doesn't stand out for the wrong reasons. Like when someone shows up in a completely wrong sized suit, or wears formal attire instead of a standard suit, or just wears a button down shirt, or wears street shoes with their suit, or how about showing up to the applicant tour and lunch wearing a polo and jeans while the other applicants wore suits (they weren't interviewing that day, but interviewed in Spokane and were checking out the Seattle campus). All those have happened in the three years I have been here. But if you just do the standard, a charcoal or blue plain suit and basic patterned tie, you'll be fine. You want to be remembered for your interview, not your outfit.

Sorry to ask you this here but I had to bail on the interview attire thread after a 3 page discussion on button vs. stud earrings. I'll make it short!

1. I've got disproportionately larger thighs/legs compared to my waist so suit pants look tighter (instead of looser like slacks usually do) - would this be considered wrong sized? Otherwise, I'm thinking of buying pants 1-2 sizes larger and tailoring everything else down. 🙁

2. I've rolled my ankles every time I've worn heels (including falling off several curbs), I was thinking of cheating with a professional looking boot since I'm wearing pants but I didn't know if that was blasphemous or not... At barely over 5', I didn't really want to pursue flats.

Thanks in advance!

It'll be fine. As long as your outfit doesn't make you stand out you will be fine. Women's clothing is a lot less regulated and standardized.

Seriously, wear comfortable shoes to the interview. You will be walking a ton for the tour and we appreciate those that don't wear heels. Or bring a second pair of shoes to slip on. People do this all the time.

I understand your reservations with the Women's Clothing thread; it gets obnoxious in there.

I suggest buying the pants 1-2 sizes up and tailoring the waist. I had to do this for my skirt, and it still ended up being too snug in the bum (my fault for trying to convince myself I'm smaller than I am). If I had to change one thing about my interview days, I would make my skirt larger in the hips so I wasn't always pulling at it. Save yourself the trouble!

Have you tried wearing a wider heel? They tend to be less roly-poly. I'd opt for those over boots. Even a wedge would be more appropriate. Here are a few examples:

That being said, I read somewhere that UW thinks people overemphasize the importance of a perfect outfit on interview day. Seattle isn't the most fashion-forward place, after all...

Thanks for the advice. I'm glad non-heels are appreciated at least for the tour!

Thanks for all the advice and examples. I was thinking of those exactly as an alternative. I want to go with something like this (http://www.dsw.com/shoe/franco+sarto+kabrina+chelsea+boot?prodId=312117) but more all around black leather (only because I feel so boss grounded instead of an awkward flamingo) but my much more feminine sister is horrified.

These would be appropriate with jeans and a plaid shirt.
If you really can't do heels, then just get a nice pair of flats.
I was the only girl with heels on my UW interview day, so you definitely wouldn't stand out if you were wearing (appropriate) flats.

For what it's worth, I heard the dean of admissions speak during a pre med presentation about an interviewee who showed up in jeans under a skirt and a hoodie and she got accepted because she was a great applicant. She told us this because she is aware how much people fret over what to wear where in reality, at least for uwsom, all that really matters is what type of applicant you are. Should you want to risk it by wearing jeans? Probably not. Will your interviewers be referencing your shoes while assessing if you're a good applicant? Probably not.

I actually had some one on one time with the admin group during my second interview and they made it seem like they really appreciated folks who wore something other than the typical gray or black pant/skirt suit. They said it was refreshing to see people in other colors and it helps you stand out. Whatever you decide to wear, just be confident. That may sound easy, but when you get there and you're in a sea of black and gray you definitely start to sweat a little bit. At the first school I interviewed I wore a blush pink blazer with navy slacks, among 70 other black and gray suits 🙁 but you know what, I didn't spend 300$ on a suit and I still got in .

I have fat thighs and I'm five feet tall, and I have several suits that make me look well proportioned and tall. One option is pants with tapered legs, which is what I normally wear. But if you don't want to do that (and they are a little trendy so if you're investing in your Main Suit I would maybe recommend against it) then straight a moderately flared pants should fit fine. If they're emphasizing the thighs vs everything else (this happens to me too, I know exactly what you mean) then they are not a good cut for you specifically. You can have them tailored to be the right cut or try another store or cut.

Get it tailored no matter what though. Nothing beats the fit of pants made to suit you. Mine looked good on my legs before I had then adjusted and now they look awesome.

For shoes, wear whatever you want. No one expects heels and you don't need to be mildly taller.

You know, I wanted a unique colored suit for this reason (at least navy!) and it was not in my price range in any brand I wouldn't have to totally reconstruct (for another $300) with a tailor. I was pretty bummed!

I wore navy 🙂 I was usually the only one, or there was one other person. There was a guy at another one of my interviews who wore a color that was absolutely divine; I can only describe it as sort of a brownish pewter. I wanted to ask him where it was from, but I refrained because I'm a chick and that would be odd. Anyway, enough derailing this thread.

So about the email that said, "A status update on your application will be available after the second week of Spokane interviews (no later than January 22nd)" - any guesses on what this means for SUC people? Do we still have to wait til March or will they really say something before the end of this month?

I think a SUC email is considered an update on your status 🙁 I'd be prepared to wait for March.

I just wanted to chime in on this conversation...I too received a SUC in Dec for the Spokane cohort and then the email stating SOM's intention to update the status of applicants. As a SUC applicant I expect to receive an update before 22 Jan whether it is reaffirming I am SUC or updating me with a different status. From what I have read, every time an EXCOM meeting is held statuses will be updated...up until the last meeting in March then final decisions will be made.
Obviously an applicant is SUC for a wide variety of reasons...one reason could be is that they are trying to have a better group with which to compare unique applicants.
So I am excited about the status update in the next two weeks!
Good luck to everyone!
