2015-2016 University of Wisconsin Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also, does anyone know if they reply after you send them an interview confirmation email..? I wanna make sure they actually received my email ..

Got rejected this afternoon, was completed 8/15. OOS applicant. Good luck to everyone!

I'm interviewing this Friday, and I booked a plane ticket back a few days after the interview because it was cheaper and I could check out the city.

Any suggestions on where I should stay that is cheap and close to where all the fun is? I was looking up hostels, but it doesn't seem like there are too many around Madison.

Edit: Also, anyone doing the same thing and down to hang???

Look up AirBNB (many will prob be around the airport and lake areas) for ppl offering their spare rooms or place for cheap prices; hostels are generally more for touristy places haha. There's plenty to explore east of the area (union south, MU, state st) and a lot of hiking and running trails throughout madison too, but it depends on what your heart desires 😉

UWSMPH can connect you with current med students who are willing to host interviewees. That info should be in the email you received after II confirmation. Most of the fun is on State st. so you could try to find a place near there. Saturdays there is the Farmer's Market which is amazing, but i'm not sure how it is nowadays that its starting to get cold.

Good Luck!

@Jennyfishy if you have free time, could you answer some questions related to interviews:

(1) Does each interview date have a mix of IS and OOS applicants, or are they only made up of one group?
(2) Are IS applicants given earlier interview dates than OOS applicants?
(3) Does the OOS committee consider Minnesotans honorary Wisconsinites? Just kidding about that one.

Thank you in advance for any info!

I interviewed on the first day of interviews (9/18) and there were a solid mix of IS and OOS. And sadly, Minnesotans are Minnesotans!

Wisconsin-Minnesota reciprocity is a thing you'll see online in some places, and if anyone is actually wondering about:

The answer is no. Wisconsin-Minnesota reciprocity deals only with tuition for undergrads. I thought it might apply to admissions as well and so I talked to the person at Minnesota about it - no dice.

Looks like everyone else took care of the other qs

To answer 2, no, there is a mix of IS and OOS at all interview dates. The committees meet on different days but IIs are sorted pretty evenly by the admissions people 🙂

Has anyone heard if any acceptance calls have been made yet?

Interviewed on Friday-- no acceptance calls had been made at that time 🙂

Their twitter says sometime this week they'll get first round of decisions out!

IS, complete email 9/17 but no ii yet 🙁. Anyone else in the same boat?

Acceptances by phone! Mail to come later in the week

This kid is. *points to self*
😢

I am a re-applicant... My application is stronger now and at this point during the cycle I applied I had already interviewed. Which I realize means nothing because that is how MD admissions work *kanye shrug*

But yeah I wish I knew how many ii slots are even left so I had a feel for my chances at this point.

Accepted! Got the call this afternoon. Congrats to all who received calls today, and best of luck to everyone else as they continue their journey!

Congrats!! If you don't mind, when did you interview?

I interviewed October 9th. Has anyone that interviewed on this date or later been accepted? I REALLY want to get into this school

I think they are rolling out acceptances for Sept interviews first. Oct interviewees have to wait.

Rejected, IS. MCAT: 514. Post-Bacc: 4.00. Quite shocked by this one, especially as an IS. Good luck everyone, and congrats to those who got accepted!

Anyone know how long it takes to get a decision for an IS interviewee once past October 15th? I interview late October and was wondering if anyone was told at their interview day what sort of timeframe there was for hearing back when interviewing after October 15th.

They said they were aiming for 4 to 5 weeks after. I imagine it will be on the short side early and get longer and longer.

Oh wow. That's fairly long compared to other schools I've heard from.

Did you have a weak Personal statement or something?? Im trying to figure out why you were rejected.

It's a Tuesday afternoon. The man had seen that others heard back from Wisconsin the prior afternoon. He was waiting for a phone call...a phone call from a number unknown. As he waited, his phone rang... and the number was unknown. There was no caller ID and he didn't recognize it. It had to be from Wisconsin admissions. His heart is racing. He picks up the phone and waits a second...."Hello."
A woman responds, "Hello, please do not hang up. I'm calling about your credit card."
The man hangs up.

It was a bit out of the ordinary, but the med school admissions advisor with whom I spoke said it was fine. She said the committee didn't feel I had enough clinical experience (100+ hours volunteering at a free clinic and ~20 hours of shadowing).

I mean that's not a ton of clinical experience, but doesn't really seem so unreasonably low that it would be grounds for a rejection...I have less clinical experience than that so reading this makes me more than a touch nervous.

Ah that makes sense. Thanks for the response!

I understand what you mean, but showing the admissions committee that you have medical experience and know what you're getting yourself into is two-fold. First you have to demonstrate it, with the hours in your activities. Then you have to write about it... when the reviewer gets done reading your app they need to know that you 1. know what being a doctor actually entails 2. are not only willing but excited to spend the next 40-50 yrs of your life doing that, and 3. They need to be able to articulate why you want to be a doctor and nothing else in the whole world (not an engineer or a PA or a nurse or a SW). Now some people write really eloquently about these things and can convince the Adcomm of them despite not having a ton of hours. Other people need more hours or breadth of experience to convince them. I got into several medical schools with only 24 hrs of shadowing and 2-3 other types of pt contact (less than 100 hrs each), but I made all of those my "most meaningful" activities and poured my heart out about what I got out of them and what they meant to me lol

TLDR: There are multiple ways to show the Adcomm that you know what you're getting yourself into, and its not always about the hours.

Hope this helps, don't be nervous! 🙂

Anyone know if any OOS applicants have received acceptance calls yet? Was wondering if maybe they call IS people before OOS.

That makes sense. I don't have a ton of hours but have been told I wrote pretty well about some pivotal experiences I had during the (relatively) small number of hours of clinical experience.
