2016-2017 Cleveland Clinic (Lerner) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
December 6 is the first ranking meeting meaning that the first 16 acceptances for this cycle should get a call about a week after that. The second ranking meeting is Feb 7, 2017. Please see my posts from last year as I explained what this all means.
any idea when more IIs will come out? Or why they've been seemingly backed up since August?

Oh so they only pick 16 the first round and pick another 16 the second round?

Ahh i see
This is true. The first 16 acceptances will be offered in the second week of December. The second 16 acceptances will be offered in the second week of February. Keep in mind that about 40-45 acceptances are generally offered to fill class of 32. Last year, 9 of the first 16 acceptances matriculated to CCLCM. So, you still have a very good chance of being accepted even if you interview in December and January. The last date for interviews for CT is February 1, 2016. Wishing all the best to those applying here and elsewhere.

So does that mean that only 16 PIs will be getting phone calls from the admissions committee?

So I got invited to interview for university track and college track, I tried to schedule online and there were no dates available for CCLCM! I sent them an email, anyone else have the same problem?

Interview invite to the University and College programs!! Application completed in July.

I'm planning to schedule consecutive interview dates. I know this a minor point, but was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or advice on whether it would be more informative to interview at CWRU first, then Cleveland Clinic - or in the reverse order?

Doesn't really matter. It'll likely be dictated by available dates if anything.

How do I ensure my update will be received by the CCLCM adcom? I submitted a file through iapply but should I send them an email as well?

Did anyone have a great interview, but eventually get rejected? I'm wondering how much of the interviewers' feedback correlates to actual acceptance. Any differences with regard to this between other schools and Lerner?

Well considering they interview 250 but only accept ~40 total, there has to be a bunch of great interviews that don't result in acceptance. Most schools accept a higher % of interviewees, but it seems like Lerner is really invested in putting together a certain type of class

Much of the discussion in the committee meetings revolve around how the candidate fits the curriculum of CCLCM (small group PBL, written portfolios through self reflection, etc) and their passion for research.

Just got an II! I'm having trouble viewing the interview schedule though...

Same here. I got an email asking for my interview day preference, but there were no dates provided. Can someone who already scheduled their interview chime in?

This is where I'm at now! Did you get it worked out?

To everyone saying they had problems scheduling I had to wait a few days before dates appeared on my calendar!

II just now! 🙂
Does anyone have any tips on how to prepare for interview day? This is my first interview of this cycle! Excited, but also nervous seeing as their acceptance rate post-interview is not too high.

Marked complete 8/9; placed on interview hold 8/31; scheduled for January 13th (I had to call them because I only had one date available in their scheduling calendar, and I will be out of the country then).

LizzyM: ~73, International Student, Non-trad

Yay another fellow international student! Good luck!! Just be yourself. You have to convince them that you will fit in their unique learning environment, so have some experiences to back that up. Also, make sure you read your secondary answers, especially the research part.

Yeah I interviewed here! and there was another int'l student my interview day too. It seems this program is really intn'l friendly 🙂

Letter of intent post-II, yes or no? I think this school's a great fit for me for a variety of reasons, and am wondering whether articulating my sentiments through a letter would improve my chances. How receptive is CCLCM to such communication after the interview? Also, should I aim for a specific timing (before the December 8th meeting)?

I thought adcom101 said the meeting was the 6th. I was wondering this as well, this is my top choice but I wasn't sure if I should send a LOI before this meeting or to send it if I get placed on hold.

I think they meet every other Thursday, and from what I gather December 8th is the Thursday they'll be ranking us. I could be wrong though!

The first ranking meeting is on Dec 6. Not to repeat myself entirely, you can look at my post last year what this all means. I do not think the letter of intent is needed. The fact that you have applied here and traveled to interview here, and hope that you conveyed that CCLCM is high on your list should be sufficient enough to let us know your intent.

When they call PIs, do they just contact the most recent one?

So if your PI gets called, does that mean you're getting accepted?

The PI that you worked with extensively or the PI that wrote your recommendation letter will be called before offered an acceptance. Most importantly, we want to verify your commitment to research, discuss your role/involvement in the lab, and to verify what you wrote in your research essay is what you actually did.

This PI phone call topic is being beaten to death.

How do our interviewers present us to the committee? Is there a rubric or format they follow, and perhaps a scoring system? Thank you!

I'm sure you will understand, but I'm sorry that I can't get into specifics of the committee. Know that the interviewed applicant is thoroughly discussed. I fully agree that the "PI phone call" topic has been beaten to death. If you can't understand this and you haven't figured it out yet from my prior posts from last year, then.... I will leave it at that.

I understand the PI phone call part! Thanks for replying 🙂

Questions to adcoms, for those of us on hold:

1. When does the committee plan to re-review the applications that were placed on hold? Would our applications be reconsidered once the 1st round of rankings end, or are our applications periodically reconsidered and put back on hold?
2. What's the general likelihood of on-hold people receiving interviews as December approaches? Is it reasonable to assume that the majority of interviews have been sent out at this point, or are we closer to the halfway mark?

After your interview, you will be notified if your application was rejected. If you are not rejected, and you are not one of the first 16 offered acceptance, you are still in the running for the #17-32 slots. In other words, even if you are not ranked #1-16 AND you are not flat out rejected (i.e placed on “Hold”), your application is still open/active and would still be in consideration for being ranked #17-32 which is approximately in the first week of February. Interviews continue until end of January and I have no idea how many interview slots are available. Every active application is re-reviewed and re-ranked regardless when you interviewed (early September to late January). The WL will not be generated until that second ranking meeting. So, don't lose hope if you are not in this first group of accepted CCLCM applicants. In the past, about half of those selected in the first 16 matriculate elsewhere with about 44-45 being accepted to fill a class of 32. Hope this information helps. Best of luck to everyone.

Rank. Meeting. Tomorrow.
