2016-2017 Pennsylvania State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It sounds like it may be the wait list: (from their website)

"Applications will be continuously reviewed until the class is filled. Applicants on the hold list will be selected to fill spaces, which may occur any time prior to the first day of classes."

From my understanding, I don't think Penn State does a WL, they just put people on hold until a decision is made.

Does this mean that as people deny their acceptances, those put on hold will receive an acceptance? I'm not familiar with how this works...

Unfortunately, I'm not really sure how it works either. I think they may treat hold like a typical wait list.

For pre-II hold: You may be contacted anytime from now until March for an II. They should be finishing up reviewing all their completed apps and then re-reviewing the hold people. Movement usually begins in February.

For post-interview hold: The hold email is the waitlist and the only email you will receive from them about your status until you are accepted or rejected in July.

So....I'm in state with fairly high stats and still no II. Should I be worried? I logged in and it doesn't say I have a hold, but I also can't figure out where to find that.

How high of stats are we talking about? Cuz I know some people with ~4.0 gpa and 38+ MCAT that didn't get in their first cycle.

IS status doesn't matter for this school. They don't have too much of a bias because they're a state-affiliated private medical school. Whatever that means, but the class is split up 50/50 IS and OOS.

It appears every school tries to figure "How likely the candidate will accept the offer and attend the school".

My LizzyM score is above 74 I think. I'm not expecting to get in or not get in, just wanted to know if they were still sending out interview requests. I have had other interviews at higher tier schools. I gave up understanding this process.

Congrats! Where does this tab appear? And did you just get it now?

I agree with your observation that higher stats alone may not get an II for a particular school.

Looking at last year Penn State stats from MSAR:

In State: Number of Applicants: 1218; Interviewed: 222; Matriculated: 63
OOS : Number of Applicants: 7429; Interviewed: 637; Matriculated: 85

Is the probability high for an IS applicant to get II or Acceptance ??

Does Penn state reject anyone post interview?

And they will never send you an email if you are accepted, correct?

o wow I didn't know they took more OOS now. From those stats, yes there is an advantage of being an IS applicant in terms of getting an II and being accepted. However, I was trying to point out that it's far from the significant advantage you have at a typical IS institution in terms of acceptance. Penn State is like a hybrid of some sorts. For some public med schools they accept 80%+ IS students and some even going 95+% IS.

Agree. I thought the same and surprised to see they accepted so many OOS.

For those on a waitlist ( me included), let's hope this it true for this cycle too...

According to the admissions office, the hold list is the same as the waitlist.

Thank you! It's on the portal at the top. & I only check once a day so I'm not sure what time it appeared exactly

Also on Hold. Does that info from the MSAR mean only 15-25 people will be put on "hold" total?

from my portal:
Should your application remain active beyond the AMCAS reporting date of April 30, 2017, you will remain in the Hold category. If there are withdrawals prior to the start of classes, you may be considered for a position in the Entering Class of 2017. During this period it is important that the Office of Admissions has an updated mailing address and phone number where you can be contacted.

does this mean those of us on hold won't hear anything until April? or at any point from now until April?

Interviewed 9/21 and haven't heard anything yet. Anyone else still waiting to hear back from this timeframe?

congrats!!!!! were you on hold ?
I don't think I was on hold? I just checked my portal after I saw the post on sdn! I think the adcoms are catching up with decisions they delayed bc of the Thanksgiving holiday
