2016-2017 Pennsylvania State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interestingly during my intervieww I learned that penn state no longer has in state and out of state tuition. While the MSAR says there is in/out state tuition, the faculty member interviewing me said they have done away with this. My assumption is that this means the school is now private Curious to see how this impacts the admission cycle here.

Congratulations !! what days are available to interview? Thanks
I only had the option of November 9th and 11th, in part I think because you have to interview within 6 weeks of the invite.
No ties to the state, but I'm a Maryland resident.

Hopefully their tuition is somewhere in the middle

If this is the case then oos status changes.
If no longer a state school they are free to choose whomever

I'm not sure about the tuition, but when I interviewed here before, they said they were never a state school. They are a private institution, but their name often gets people confused since Penn State University is a state school. confusing I know....

On my interview we were told they are one of the largest satellite campuses of Penn State and were a public school

Yes they work together with the Penn State University campus which is a public school. On MSAR they were listed as a private school. For my application year, their entering class was 144 seats with 50% IS and 50% OOS. Still a bias for IS because their mission is to provide for the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, but I don't think a public school will accept 50% OOS. I couldn't really find anything on their website. FWIW, Wiki says it's a state affiliated private school which means Pennsylvania residents get tuition discount, but the institution still remains private.

Getting off topic, but it doesn't matter what they are because they still accept a very large amount of OOS applicants.

Can anybody offer some insight as to the post interview acceptance rate for this school? I know they don't report to USNews, but does anybody have a rough idea?
Do they publish these stats on MSAR? I don't have it but they may be on there

I don't think they do...I only see how many IS and OOS applicants were interviewed, and how many matriculated. I don't see any information on the # of post-interview acceptances 😕

Sorry to ask and it's completely understandable if you don't want to do so, but could you post the OOS interviewed/matriculated data from MSAR?

OOS Applied: 7429
OOS Interviewed: 637
OOS Matriculated: 85

(and for completion's sake)
IS Applied: 1218
IS Interviewed: 222
IS Matriculated: 63

For those interviewing:
I had mine last week and it was a great experience, probably my favorite interview so far. Both my interviewers seemed like they actually knew my application, and I received compliments from both of them regarding my activities and scores. Ended up feeling very welcomed by the entire staff and the whole day was very relaxed.

How strict is the letter requirement?

I am a couple of years out of undergrad and I dont have a non science faculty letter, my third letter was usually my employer letter

I do have 4 letters total tho

Reallllyyyyy late response, but I had the same issue. I emailed the admissions office and they said it should be fine as long as you explain it on the secondary. I used the first personal statement question ("unique aspect of your application" question) to explain my lack of non-science LOR; this seemed to be the only place you could do it. That sucks for me because I really wanted to use the space to talk about my experience as a first-gen college grad 🙁

Does anyone know if this school accepts post-interview updates? I didn't see anywhere to upload updates on the portal so my guess is no.

They do not - the woman at the admissions office said you can send thank you's but not updates

Hey everyone,
I am a Medical Student Design Partner (MSDP) with the Penn State College of Medicine University Park Regional Campus and I wanted to make myself available if anyone has questions about the program. I applied to medical school last cycle, was accepted to Penn State College of Medicine, attended a secondary set of interviews at University Park, and ultimately accepted the job to defer my medical education for a year (so I would be your classmate if you end up here) to work with the preceptors here to develop our innovative curriculum. There are five of us MSDPs and we are now about two and a half months into our work designing, piloting, and critiquing the curriculum. It's been an adventure thus far, spending a great deal of time working in actual medical practices from day 1 and focusing on inquiry groups instead of lectures. If anyone has any questions about the program, feel free to ask them here or PM me. Having just gone through the whole application process last year, I can empathize with where you all are at this point. There is light at the end of the tunnel and you will get there. Best of luck and may you all have a hefty handful of IIs and acceptances soon.

Roughly 1/3-1/4 of interviewed students are accepted, according to last year's second look. Recognize though that that statistic includes post-waitlist acceptances.
According to last year's second look? Where are you getting this information? MSAR only release # of students interviewed and matriculated, not # of students accepted post-interview. Adcoms didn't even give us this information on interview day, so I'm curious to see where you got this information!

Just got put on pre-II hold. Anyone know if this is more of a courtesy or if there has been past movement to II? Complete 8/5 OOS

DW guys! I was placed on hold two cycles ago in February and thought I was done too, but received an interview for March. Granted I didn't get in, but by no way does it mean you don't have a chance to show your stuff. Chin up! 😉

Hold...idk how true it is but the email said it's a very common thing....OOS complete 8/24ish

Should mean II's are coming out soon! Crossing fingers for all those who have survived email-less so far 🙂

I just looked through past SDN threads (past two years) for the pre-II hold and it was quite common. There are very few cases of II after hold, all in the spring semester. There's a little hope but best to just put it out of our minds for now. Cheering on those who are left!

I don't even have any fricken interviews. I hate my life rn

I know this is probably not going to make you feel much better, but a lot of people (who may be just as, if not more qualified) do not have interviews at this point either. Distract yourself with something while waiting - it's what I've been doing to try to distance myself from the fact that I've been just getting hold after hold XD

Wishing you the best! It's a long process (ugh) but we'll make it through one way or another 😛

But...
You have an above average MCAT score and a solid GPA. Honestly, at least one school is going to be interested in you. And I'm not just saying that because it's probably want you wanna hear. But your chance of getting at least an interview is higher than some other people , including me.
