2016-2017 Rush Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As an M1 right now at Rush, just to be clear, the school looks for you to have 150 hours of volunteering in non-clinical and 150 hours in clinical. I only had about 350 hours total. I don't know where this 1000 hours number came, but 960 is plenty enough.

Would they consider military service to be a form of volunteering?

I would imagine that if you did not get paid during that time, they would. However, if you were paid they would likely not. This is based on what the application process has taught me, personally, this cycle. Serving in the military is/will still look wonderful on your application though!

II just now. ~2000 hours of clinic/nonclinical experience. Complete mid-July I believe. LizzyM~68-70

Congratulations! I love the med district, and I love Rush! Seriously, you're going to be so impressed once you get there (I hope!)

"Describe a challenging situation in which you did not agree with a directive/rule and how you handled this."

could someone clarify this question for me please? i wanted to talk about a situation where I had trouble tutoring a student due his special learning condition, would that be suitable?

Can anyone add anything about questions asked at the interview? I'm sort of freaking out about weird, esoteric questions about the healthcare system other than ACA, medicaid, etc.

It's asking about a time when someone told you to do something/not to do something and you didn't agree with them and then what you did about it. It needs to be a directive or rule, not just a challenging experience like your example suggests. Hope this helps!

Just wanted to make sure, the college is on S. Paulina St, right next to the Rush medical center, correct?

Yes to the question that the medical college is on Paulina. There will be a sign when you show up that tells you how to navigate to get to your interview.

The interview questions are very informal. I never got asked about healthcare policy. My questions focused on mostly my application, my desire for service, and personal things like what i did on a friday night and what i did for fun.

You do have two interviews when you come to Rush. A 40 min in depth interview and a 10 min interview. Both are opportunities to show your desire to attend the school, and to show what experiences you have and what makes Rush a good fit.

Your username suggest that you're from purdue area? So does that mean you were OOS when you were accepted to Rush? If so, why did you decide to go to Rush and got any pointers for us on interview day?

Could you elaborate on what you mean by "your desire for service"? Like talking about why I enjoyed the service work I did college, or what you gained from your service?

I am actually in state and I decided to go to Rush because of what you will see on interview day. Rush is a top 50 hospital in the United States. It has phenomenal resources for students. Also, the school is right beside County Hospital, which is where we also do parts of our clinicals and another amazing place to learn. Also being in Chicago is amazing. You'll also see on your interview day how relaxed and friendly the vibe is at Rush, and you'll fall in love. Everyone here works together and has the goal of using community service to better serve our area.

Interview Day is very easy. I would just come prepared with questions to ask about the school, i would do your basic research on Rush, such as clubs and school facts. The interviews are meant to get to know you, not get to test your knowledge. Rush accepts about 60% of the students they interview so getting an interview this early is a good sign. Just be relaxed and be yourself. Know your personal statement and know your resume, they will draw a decent amount of questions on that so be able to expand on that so the person on paper matches the person in the interview.

What I meant is that Rush is a very community service based school. Showing up to the interview with knowledge about community service projects happening at Rush is very impressive if talking to the right interviewer. Also, Rush has selected you for an interview because they feel like you have shown a desire and passion for community service. So make sure you elaborate on your experiences and what you gained from them and how you could best use those experiences to help you in medical school.

Has anyone called or emailed the admissions office to clarify their number of clinical/volunteer hours? I feel like some may be difficult to calculate from my primary app and I want to make sure they know I'm at the 150 cut off...

Describe a challenging situation in which you did not agree with a directive/rule and how you handled this. (1000 characters)

could someone give me an example on how to answer this question? i'm having trouble :/

Have you had a situation at work where someone higher up has made a rule you didn't agree with? Or maybe at school? Perhaps some sort of tradition or guideline that was accepted by others but which you questioned?

For anyone that received a II do you mind sharing if you met the "approximately 1650 healthcare exposure hours as well as 1650 hours of community service experience" average from last year's class?

I received a secondary and I have about 400 hours of clinical volunteering/healthcare exposure, 800 hours of community service (with underprivileged and medically underserved), 900 hours of research (not sure how much they focus on this though), and I also received a distinguished service award

do you think I should complete the secondary or just save my $100 for another school?

I had >1650 hours of healthcare exposure, >1000 hours of community service and >3500 hours of research. That being said, they only say you need to have more than 150 hours each of service and healthcare exposure so I think you sound like a great fit with all of your service and the award will really stand out! I'd say apply!

II today! Schedule is getting full so I wasn't able to schedule until 10/12. Hopefully that doesn't hurt my chances. Really excited to interview here!

I wish I had you problem haha, congrats! Would you mind sharing stats/complete date?

Haha I feel you. I currently have a 3 week straight long trip around America throughout September for mine. It's def a good problem to have.

II! Very very very excited to see Chicago!! LizzyM 67, OOS, and URM. I was (and still am) really worried about the service cut offs. Community service is probably the weakest area of my app, I probably only barely make the 150hrs. But I did work throughout undergrad and have clinical volunteering/work.

You got an interview. You're good on those measures. 🙂 Enjoy!

Congrats!! What was your complete date?

Can anyone elaborate on what the likelihood of getting an acceptance from an early interview date? Rush says they get back to you about your admissions decision 2 weeks after your interview– so is it safe to assume that, if you seem like a good fit for Rush and it's this early, that you have a good shot of getting in?

I'm choosing to look at it that way🙂 It definitely doesn't hurt our chances!

Does anyone know if Rush would care about an in the area email?

Can someone briefly describe their experiences on interview day?

Yes please +1 to that! Anyone who interviewed today please let us know what it was like!

Current M1, feel free to shoot me an inbox message with questions. I'll try to get answers to you guys ASAP.

Bump for descriptions of what interview day is like?

I'm curious if the 10 min interview will be like a MMI but just one of them?

So for the blue line, am I allowed to buy a one-way ticket to ohare and then get off at multiple points on that blue line and get back on or would I need to repay?

Guess I'm not following your question fully, but I'll do my best. You can buy a one day pass (I think $10?) and ride all you want, any distance, on any line.

Im not sure if this has been asked but Im only spending one night in chicago for my interview and I have to check out of the hotel early next morning. Am I allowed to bring my backpack and suitcase with me to the interview? If not, what are some options for me to store the luggage while I'm interviewing?

Also, would coffee be provided during breakfast?
