2016-2017 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sorry if this is a stupid question...but I'm non-trad so I don't have an academic advisor or really know anyone who can explain rolling admissions to me. So on Iowa's website it says that it is advantageous to interview early in the cycle because of rolling admissions, but then they have a "final pool" of applicants in January (I think...can't remember the exact month). So how I understand this is that admissions are rolling, but then if somehow you get put into the final pool (which I don't know how they make that decision) you get put into a group with people who potentially could have interviewed much later than you did? Or does the final pool only consist of people who interviewed after a certain date? I'm just curious, trying to wrap my head about how admissions committees work going through all these applications.

They accept people on a rolling basis, and everyone who isn't accepted before mid-January is lumped together (this includes people who interview after rolling admissions ends). These people are either accepted or final-pooled at this time. Then sometime in March, this group is either accepted, rejected, or waitlisted.

Any favorite spots for dinner in Iowa city or Cedar Rapids?

What are you doing in Cedar Rapids?

If you are going downtown (which is like 3 minutes from the medical school), I like Short's for burgers, Pullman for something a little nicer (but still under $15), and Nodo for casual sandwiches.

Cedar Rapids is just where I'm flying into/out of.

I saw those on yelp, I'll have to give one a try. Thanks!

1. Short's burgers is a popular/unique place pretty close to the undergraduate half of campus.

2. I also particularly love Mosley's BBQ, in downtown IC, a bit further from campus -- strongly recommend the ribs!

3. Formosa is a sushi place in the ped mall near campus that has great prices on Tuesday and Thursday.

Have fun in IC!!

CID is really like 15 minutes south of the actual city of Cedar Rapids, and I don't really think it is worth driving out of the way to visit. Plenty of good choices in Iowa City. Hope your trip is nice!

So did the Admissions Office give out any II's this week?

I was there, it was awesome. It was like watching a different team play.

Also, I didn't even know roughing the center was a thing.
Just when I thought I was done caring about the season they find a way to pull me back in.

And right!? Michigan has gotten that call twice this season, Iowa AND Wisconsin! Honestly, I think it's Harbaugh whining and complaining.

If you haven't interviewed here yet, get excited. This place is the real deal. I fell in love at my interview day, now it seems (after seeing no decisions on the people who interviewed way before me) I am in for a wait. Bundle up y'all! It could be a long winter.

When did you interview?

November 9th. You were who I meant when I said others had "interviewed earlier". I am not getting my hopes up for an immediate response.
Also interviewed on the 9th. I was really hoping for it to be the 11th so I could have possibly stayed for the game. That would have been crazy.

An ISer interview 10/17 and was accepted! And I'm pretty sure plenty of OOSers interviewed earlier and were accepted.

All I saw was your "maybe next week" post and so I didn't know you were accepted. Congratulations!

wtf this school doesn't let you establish IS residency after a year???

No, many schools do not. However, they are generous in aid for their OOS students and the difference in cost from attending my own state institution wasn't even a factor in my decision. Carver is that great.

alright homie thanks they better hook it up

So it seems like they release a few acceptances every Tuesday? I interviewed on 10/28 and I'm still waiting for hear back. Has anyone from that day or later heard back? Also, @GoCubsGo20 I think we've met 🙂

can anyone tell me how many other interviewees there are on the interview day ?

So has anyone gotten a post-interview rejection here so far? From this thread it seems like they have only given either acceptance or silence. Really hoping they don't save all of the rejections for the final pool in march...anyone have any insight on this?

So, post-interview rejections are not until March (at least last year).

They said we should hear back from them in about 6 weeks after our interview. I would imagine this entails acceptance, wait list, or rejection.
