2016-2017 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
what was the interview day like? interviewing next month and i dont know what to expect

There were info sessions all morning about curriculum/financial aid/admissions, then lunch and a tour with current students. In the afternoon you do two things in either order: interview with you and 2 faculty members which is closed file and lasts just about 25 min and the first 3 questions are standardized that everyone is asked qnd they give no feedback or follow-up questions, and then after that the interviewers can ask whatever they want. During this time the second half of the group does a Case Based Learning session where you get to try out this part of their curriculum and you are evaluated by two 4th year medical students -- just like initiative, communication, teamwork, etc -- NOT judging your medical knowledge at all. good luck with your interview.

PS. The SDN interview feedback page had every single question listed on it that I was asked during my actual interview. Don't like rehearse or memorize answers but this was nice because I wasn't blindsided by any questions.

Has anyone who interviewed in the beginning of October been accepted yet?

I interviewed 10/17 and was accepted 11/1 but I've talked to a couple others from my interview day and there has been a wide variety in response times, so they definitely do not seem to review apps in order by date so I wouldn't stress/read into not hearing anything too much!

I interviewed 10/7 and haven't heard anything yet. It makes me so anxious every Tuesday but I haven't noticed anyone else posting from that day either so there's always hope 🙂 I swear my blood pressure goes up every Tuesday all day

I feel the same way! I pretty much glare at any e-mail I get on Tuesdays that isn't from Carver haha. I agree though, it doesn't seem like anyone who interviewed our week has heard back yet so that makes me feel better

I interviewed 10/12 and feel the exact same way lmao

OMG YUSSS I have this sudden urge each time to unsubscribe from everything, but then I'm like 'oh wait I can't subscribe from professors' emails...'

Ya'll figure the ADCOM is gonna send some II's/acceptances next week before thanksgiving or do you think we gotta wait until after Thanksgiving for more news?

I'm assuming Carver sends their offers out at the beginning of each month (like the majority of other schools) or that seems to be the trend.

I wouldn't count on it, but never say never as they are working on Tuesday. Good luck to those interviewing tomorrow!

Well, I received an II to SLU yesterday, but I'm gonna cancel it now. Iowa is my number 1 by far and I'm beyond excited for this! It's my home state, I can't think of a better place to learn and give back!

Awesome, feel free to PM if you want to chat about Iowa or have any questions. We are just wrapping up the first semester in a couple weeks!

Thank you very much my friend! I appreciate the positive vibes!

Does anybody know the average time between submitting a secondary and hearing back about interviews?

The second month after your interview.
(That's what Amy told us anyway. Think she's the assistant director)

Oh sorry. I meant how long does it usually take to hear back from Carver after you submit the secondary application.

It could really be whenever. Are you IS? Could be a quicker turn around compared to OOS. When did you submit?

I am OOS but an URM (not sure if that matters). I received a completed secondary notification on 11/21/2016 because I took the MCAT in late summer (was working about 70 hours a week from about April until recently so maintaining a strict study schedule was difficult).

Being an URM will most definitely help you! Also, holy cow maintaining a 70hr work week is so impressive! Best of luck to you!

Interviewed here on Monday and just want to share with those with future interviews that it was a great experience! Everyone (fellow interviewees, students and faculty) were very friendly and enthusiastic about the school. The CBL was a really fun activity and is probably the most I've enjoyed my time during an interview day. The actual interview went very well, both were very friendly and made it easy for me to really say everything I wanted to say and have a good discussion. Also pro tip: if Dr. Cooper is on your schedule, be sure to save him some Reece's cups.

Vermin my dude!!! Yes I was/still am so pumped! Haha it doesn't feel real! Have you heard anything from Iowa?

I interviewed on 11/18 and really liked it! But I'm not expecting to hear back for awhile, I think they told use that January would be the earliest.

Sent in my secondary the first week of September as an OOS applicant. Did I basically shoot myself in the foot waiting so long to submit?

I also interviewed on Monday..! The school definitely exceeded my expectations and had a really supportive/family type vibe. Hoping it works out ☺️

Hoping that tomorrow they release another round of decisions! They said mid-december so I bet that I am a week early for my interview date (Nov. 9th) but a guy can always hope.
