Lol actually all of that except the war vet (and 6 pubs not 10) 🙂 I have aVERY strong post bacc that got me past the screen.

If you get wait listed don't worry too much. I'm going to withdrawal my acceptance before April. I only accepted due to scholarship leverage at my top choice. Iowa was definitely my second choice.

So I'm wondering if anyone has any insight on the way Carver approaches admission for IS vs OOS in regards to my slightly unique situation. So I grew up in NY but went to undergrad in Iowa and stayed an extra year where I worked in my college town.

I am now living back in NY since the end of the summer and claimed NY residency on my AMCAS however, the past year I did live in Iowa and my car is still registered in Iowa.

On the interview day I noticed something interesting; they split us off into tour groups and I was placed within what seemed to be the "in state" group since everyone else there was instate while the other groups had all OOS.

Do you think it's possible that they are evaluating me within the IS group? That would honestly be fantastic since I'm sure that would exponentially increase my chances of an acceptance!

If I AM in the OOS group, do you think my strong history with Iowa will still help me among other OOS applicants? I'm just trying to understand how this all works!

How did you fill out your section of the final application on Carver's secondary which dealt with state residency? I believe it straight up asks if you consider yourself an Iowa resident.

My understanding is that the tour groups are arbitrarily determined and do not signify anything in particular. You may have felt like you were with a bunch of in-state people primarily because Iowa interviews lots of Iowans.

If you spent 12 months working in Iowa immediately proceeding your application, you may have had a strong case for residency. Your best course of action would have been to claim it on your secondary, and if not granted, filled out an application for residency found here. However, they generally try to sort out in-state vs out-of-state status pre-interview to the best of my knowledge. Should you currently be considered a non-resident and find yourself with an acceptance to Carver, it may be worth discussing potentially filling out this form before matriculation to see if you can get in-state tuition.

As it stands, the best way to know your status would be to call the admissions office for a definitive answer. They are very receptive to applicant questions. The number is listed on your secondary application.

As an aside, if you are OOS and received an interview, Carver accepts something like 100 people for their 40+ OOS spots and has an OOS waitlist of 100 people, giving you about a 2/3 chance of acceptance or wait-list of their 300-odd OOS interviews. Good Luck!

Thank you for the thorough answer! No, I did not try to claim residency on the secondary, I figured that since I claimed NY residency on the primary I couldn't put that on my secondary. Atleast my odds are still decent as an OOSer! If I'm lucky enough to be accepted I will call them to discuss residency status from a tuition standpoint.

It's just unfortunate since it seams that because I've been living in Iowa, the NY state schools seem to be shaky towards me, so it's kind of as if I'm not fully a resident anywhere :/

Sorry to hear that. I was actually surprised that they sent rejections this early. I thought they only sent rejections in January or March. Good luck with your other schools.

I got a little excited because it made me log into the portal and it said "please read the information carefully". Thought it could've been an interview. Oh well.

Does anyone know the general time of day they send Tuesday acceptances? I have to study for/take my last final today, and it's hard to focus when I'm checking my email constantly.

It could be any moment between CCOM business hours. Just stop checking and focus on your final.

Rejected Friday OOS complete early september.
 
OMG ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a third-time reapplicant, this is surreal. Going through cycles with long, discouraging droughts of correspondence can take a toll, but I encourage you all to keep your chins up. And to everyone who's still waiting to hear back, I wish the very best outcome.

How insane would it be to start my first year at another school and reapply to transfer to iowa next summer?

Very, unless there are extenuating circumstances. Iowa is on an 18 month pre-clinical curriculum so it would be virtually impossible to transfer from a traditional program. Plus, who in their right mind wants to reapply to anything? Why is this on your mind?

I would've turned down a full ride with a guaranteed residency slot of my choice to JH or Harvard [feel free to insert your own med school fantasy situation] for an acceptance to Iowa. I'd be willing to restart as an MSI honestly if they would take me (probably wouldn't since I'm guessing they would think I was weird as hell for reapplying during my MS1 year somewhere else). Got my rejection letter though so I guess realistically there's not much I can do.

Congrats! But wow, that is a really long time ago. When you interviewed did they give you a timeframe that you would most likely hear back? When I interviewed they said mid December, although they couldn't guarantee it.

We were told 4-6 weeks, but they couldn't provide specifics given their non-linear review process. Definitely thought I was destined for the final pool.

That's rough. I can totally understand why you'd love it here. Admissions is amazing and very kind here so I think you would benefit from calling and setting up a time to talk to them. Tell them what you told me, just don't make it creepy and don't make it sound like you're trying to get them to change their mind say Iowa is your top choice and, if you were to take a year off to gain some amazing life experience, how could you improve your application for next year. I think taking time off rather than accruing a year of loans matriculating somewhere else is a much better plan. Schools will not look friendly upon you accepting a spot that could have been held by someone willing to go anywhere while it's just a stepping stone for you.

What do you mean by that? I interviewed at the end of November and they said that the earliest we would possibly hear back would be sometime in January. They said that some of us would be accepted/ rejected outright and some final pooled.
