2016-2017 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wait so is the other "you've been scored" status considered the 'not good' scored status? I thought they were the same...

I'm not sure which status you're referring to as "not good." I haven't seen anyone post this year saying they have the "at this time, a final decision has not been made on your app" status though

Oh ok I see. I was just taking neuroticism to a whole new level and thought you were saying there was a difference in outcome between the two "you've been scored" statuses people seemed to have been getting.

Literally there is no difference between the various statuses. I almost went crazy last year obsessing over the wording and what it meant. They're not sending you coded messages lol.

As for the "hold status" I don't believe such a thing exists. My understanding is that UM uses a rank order list and everyone who has had their app read will be scored and placed somewhere on the list.

I believe they use some kind of algorithm that looks at things like metrics, undergrad, and a few other factors to decide what order the apps get reviewed in. Don't worry though, everyone's app will eventually get a pair of eyes.

Alright, now that little diatribe is out of the way, howdy, I'm StraightOuttaBrooklyn, but you can call me SOB for short. I'm a 3rd year here at Miller, happy to answer any and all questions that I am able to. I would like to be as transparent as possible, so with that in mind if you'd like to ask something please ask here so everyone can have access to the same information. I'm studying for Step1 (in two weeks!) but I'm happy to chime in again afterwards and I will answer whatever I am able to!

Get your applications in as early as you can! Thats the best advice I can think of for the time being! Best of luck with it!

How does UM help you study for the Step 1. Thank you

My nerves and I thank you for that. I convinced myself that I received a 'you've been axed' scored status.

II today! 3.75 cGPA, OOS, 514MCAT, F ORM, Complete with secondary on July 7th. Any M1s here with advice?

II today, completed 8/26. Interview scheduled for 10/28 just wondering from anyone who has interviewed how did it go and any tips?

Maybe Miami's calculator broke and they just don't want to do mental math to score me :/

I sometimes like to think that, when my application has been "under review" for 3+ months, it's because it's so amazingly good, that the committee members can only read one word of it per day. Like a rich chocolate cake, or a favorite desert, my application needs to be savored over months to fully appreciate it's depth. Which is why it's taken this long for me to hear.

Lol I only do portal checks for here and Tulane... At least I am "currently under review" here, so I feel better even if my app is still under a gigantic pile of apps :angelic:. That red exclamation mark in the Tulane portal is very irritating :yeahright:

Is there anyone who has interviewed and hasn't gotten the 'final decision has been made' status?

Yay looks like they're finished scoring me. I think it changed sometime this week. Submitted mid July.

If you've been scored for about a month or more, and still waiting for an interview invite, should you send an interest letter?? I think they don't like updates??

idk if they accept updates, but letters of interest should not be sent unless you have already interviewed.

Yeah, my status still says "Your applications and interview report will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee"

Interviewed last week of September.
Got the "A final decision has been reached by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine on your application. Contact the admissions ofice if you do not receive a telephone call, an e-mail or a letter within seven days." sometime late last week! Looking forward to hearing back soon ahh

so stressful! when did you get that message??

Do you guys think it is still worth it to submit a secondary here? I don't know if I've completely missed the boat because of this ranking business.

I've got a 3.6ish GPA and a 520+ MCAT.

yeah i think its worth it.

Yeah. With that monster MCAT you'll most likely get pushed to the front of the line.

well thats sort of the good thing about the "ranking business" that even if you submit now, your rank will be high and you will still pass the lower ranked people that were ranked before!

That's because everyone on here is just guessing and have actually no clue how the process works

Not quite. Childhood best friend went there and was involved with admissions.

Would any current students please comment on if there are opportunities to get involved in global health programs or go abroad at all for international clinical work for students only in the MD program? (I already have an MPH). Thanks in advance!!

Since you posted this a while ago, I hope you found some answers, but if not, here's my understanding (as a lowly M1). Short answer: Yes. Long answer:

Because of our close geographical relationship to the Caribbean and Latin America, we do a lot of medical service trips to the region. Over our spring break, there are 3 trips: one to Nicaragua, one to Haiti, one to the Dominican Republic. There's also a winter break trip (if there's funding) to Haiti, where we've had a permanent outpost since the 2010 earthquake. These trips are all run completely or in part by students, so there's ample opportunity to get involved in international health work.

There are also students that go further abroad (I've heard of a few students going to Africa, not sure where though), but these are rarer, not as organized (as in they're more individual initiatives) and I haven't heard much about them.

Finally, if none of these suit your fancy, UM is very open to student's creating their own organizations. I've thought about trying to get a group to go to Venezuela when the political situation calms down there. If you can find the interested students, faculty advisers and physicians to make it happen, no one is stopping you.
