2016-2017 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sorry. I feel real dumb to be asking this but I havent gotten any details on where we should meet for interview day. I'm on the app but it just gives a schedule. No locations. Is any email going to be sent? Where can I find this information?

You guys meet on the first floor in the admissions office of the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building. 8am I believe, but don't quote me on the time.

1600 NW 10th Ave, Miami, FL 33136

My app has been apparently scored for over a month now. Anyone else in the same boat?

Yea same here. I submitted 8/1 and have been scored for around 3 weeks or so for both MD only and MD/MPH. IS lizzy m ~70

I know it's much, much easier said than done but be patient guys. They got over 8500 apps last year. Imagine having to go through a bulk of those apps all at once, combing through what makes each person unique.

Unfortunately, it's not exactly a linear process and I don't know the algorithm. It's very well possible that someone could have submitted after you but scored higher and are subsequently thrown in the next immediate batch of IIs. That doesn't mean you didn't score well in the grand scheme of things but realistically there's always going to be automatons or even all-around rockstars that will squeak their way in and bump otherwise pretty solid students a bit further down the line.

Give it time. As we move further into the fall, I suspect more of the solid students and applicants with a compelling story, will see their day. Interviews only started this month. Keep your heads up!

Also, reminder for those interested in the MD/MPH, please feel free to tag me in a post so I leave a reply on the board for others as well.

How did you access the app? I never received the e-mail with login or download information. I have been calling and e-mailing the office but they have not returned anything. Interviewing next week so getting nervous about now having this

Do they score all applicants or only the ones they are considering for interviews?

But how would they know whether or not to consider you for an interview if they don't score you? I would think the initial screen/cutoff based on GPA and MCAT was made prior to you receiving the secondary.

I was under the general assumption that everyone receives a secondary, like most medical schools

Their website says most U.S. citizens and residents receive one. I didn't check their site until now, but I got the impression not everyone gets a secondary from their initial email about receiving my AMCAS and then receiving the secondary a couple of days later.

For those who have submitted updates to the adcom or have experience doing so, do you mind sharing the types of updates you provided? E.g. Whether they were statements of interest or more along the lines of authoring a publication, winning an award, etc.

Well, I asked my original question because I've completed everything by 7/11 and still haven't been scored...but there are people who completed in August and have been scored...

Mine involved a new research project on which I am now working, a new position as a TA, and a recent publication. I tied them all into how I would be a good fit for the school.

ehh I know it sucks, but you just have to wait it out. If you were complete 7/11, I think it may take until November for me to be scored since I submitted late August. Like in most schools, it's a nonlinear process. Sometimes certain things can put an applicant ahead in the line. They send your app out to 3 adcoms and they score your application, so if you're unlucky and an adcom is really bad about submitting his paperwork then that can also cause delays. It's terrible because that can happen for interview evaluations too, but that's just how the game is played unfortunately....

Hi everyone I made a post the other day regarding application status and didn't get much incite on the topic. My app status is "....currently under review by the admissions committee....". I was wondering if when an individual submits the secondary if the status is complete then goes to under review and then scored? Or is it always labeled under review once its submitted? I was just curious as to if I should anticipate any kind of update from UM in the near future or if this is just a general status for everyone?

I am not sure if this already got answered in another post, but I can confirm that early mid august, my application did indeed switch to "your application HAS BEEN reviewed....etc...and you will be notified in [a certain amount of time]" so don't worry! It will be reviewed!

Mine has said this for ages:

Your Application to the UM Miller School of Medicine is complete and is currently being reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

mine just says, your application is currently UNDER REVIEW by the Admissions Committee

anyone know the diff between these two??

when did u submit your secondary?

Hey all! When I was in your shoes, I analyzed my application status like crazy too lol, but it didn't change the fact that I received an interview invite about 7 months later. I know that we love Miami and want to get the awesome news as soon as possible, but it's going to take some patience (especially for those who will have that late interview invite). Getting that awesome interview invite email is a better predictor of your status. It's probably best to avoid checking the portal often. Maybe just a few times a week vs. a few times per day lol. The application cycle is nerve-wrecking and I feel for you all. Wish you the best!

I agree with this entirely. It is a nerve wracking process but you will drive yourselves nuts. Focus on things you enjoy and your other applications 😉

Hey, if you don't mind me asking, what were your stats? IS or OOS? Wondering if it will take 7 months before I get an interview lol

I applied both MD and MD/MPH and was complete in July. I haven't been scored yet. Should I be concerned?

The app says that the first acceptances will be sent on October 5th, but I was under the assumption that schools can't send acceptances until October 15th. Does anyone know if that's just an AAMC recommendation, or is this a mistake?

At the interview today they said they won't notify anyone until October 17th.

yaa the app is weird. I am not sure why it says the 5th. Maybe it means the 15th which is the day that AMCAS allows acceptances. That day happens to fall on a saturday so I guess October 17th would be the day. But who knows

I'm in the same boat. So much for reviewing us in order. My scores are also slightly above their average too.

Ya I agree. However, I do not think that they ever stated reviewing us in order. I know for sure they score us from 30 to 300 and they start picking the top for the interviews. And then after the interviews, they score you from 1 to 5 (or from 1 to 4...i forget) and then they also start picking from the list every two weeks after October 15th.

It's so weird because I was sure my score would be high, but I'm still not scored.

Have you seen the powerpoint slide that they use to score you? The one that includes life experiences, pt. care experiences, letters of rec, life adversity, quality of academic institution, etc?

Yeah. The only one I may not have is life adversity. I would argue I had some, but totally up to interpretation. The rest should be there. Oh well!

This school looks awesome. Do you think I have a chance if I have a 511 MCAT and 3.4 gpa in a really hard major at a top ten research university? I am also URM (Latino), heard that helps.

Yes! I think you can definitely get in!
Really?! that would be so amazing. I am just scared my gpa is too low, I took some really hard graduate level courses though. This is what I keep telling my self haha.

What is your science gpa? From what I know, they care mostly about science gpa and not overall gpa. And also, they place MORE emphasis on the type activities you've done and not on just stats. So going to a top 10 university, research, doing graduate level courses, etc. All of that will help more than gpa and mcat.

My science gpa is higher, a 3.5. Unfortunately I have found it hard to really put forth as much effort in humanities classes as I do in harder classes like Ochem. I've always been this way.

For the leadership part of the secondary prompt, do you think it is okay to discuss more than one situation where we had to use our leadership skills?

II!!!!!! So excited!!! Went to Miami for Ultra this past spring and so excited to go back. LizzyM 70, OOS (although I know it's private, but they still favor IS)
Do you feel like the secondary is pretty repetitive? One of the questions asks about our most memorable research experience, another asks for most meaningful clinical experience. I feel like these are the same exact questions asked on the primary. Do you feel the same way? How are you planning on approaching these questions?

What? lol I already did the secondary!

congrats!
When did you submit?

Thank you!! My primary was submitted end of June and secondary August. I think the quality of academic institution helped me out, because I don't have super awesome rockstar stats haha. I'm sure more IIs are coming!

Congratulations!!! I've seen you in multiple of the TMDSAS threads, glad OOS schools are throwing you some love! I've gotten Texas II and an II from another Florida school, but I hope Miami shows me some love T__T

I almost didn't apply OOS, since so few Texans leave. I'm so glad I did!! Thank you!!! I'm sure a II will come your way soon!!!!

Haha I feel you! Not to mention seeing that AMCAS fee vs. TMDSAS fee difference xD

Lol Texas cost of living in general is so nice! I go to college in Manhattan, so the cost difference is insane. You can buy a very nice house in TX for the same price that a cardboard box costs here 😛

Has anyone here that applied to other florida schools received any interview invites for any other florida school? Idk if this is the place to post this but i'm just curious lol UM is the only school in florida that has invited me to an interview.

I mainly applied to Texas (IS resident there) but I did apply to two Florida schools. I'm interviewing at UCF this Friday but have not received an II from Miami yet!

I know UCF is very partial to IS, so do you have ties to Florida? I heard it would be a waste of money to apply to the state schools, so I only applied to UM 😛

Edit: nvmd, just remembered you have a LizzyM of like 5 million 😉 All the schools will want you!

UCF actually accepts a lot of OOS applicants for a public school (25-30% I believe). I made sure to select schools that are more partial for OOS for my AMCAS apps since the cost was so high. I think my chances in Texas are significantly higher than my AMCAS choices though and I have one Texas school in mind as my dream school right now, but I really wanted to interview OOS as well to see what all the different programs have to offer!

I do have ties to UCF though, part of my family lives in Florida so I've spent like a month every year here since I was born lmao. Several family members graduated or attended the UCF main campus and most of my family live just down the street from main campus.
