2016-2017 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, I emailed the admissions email address about the "photo already uploaded" issue last wednesday. Since it has only been 5 days without a reply or fix to my profile, should I wait or should I email them again to ensure this wasn't overlooked?

Thanks!

Admissions here gets bombarded with emails. A lot of times it can take a week or two for them to read and respond to something. So IMO it's better to call if you've waited a few days. Every time I called as an applicant they were super helpful and resolved the issue super fast (even when it was my fault lol)

Ok, thanks! I noticed that although the status page says my supplemental is not complete (due to the photo) it also says that my application has been reviewed by the admissions committee...so this pretty much means that admissions isn't holding back on reviewing these "incomplete" supplementals due to their awareness of the photo upload problem..am I correct in the way I'm thinking of this?

Just starting this secondary. Can't seem to figure out where to upload the photo. I didn't see a link in the secondary and didn't come across one as I was logging in and selecting the program. Any help?

You can't submit the photo until after submitting your app and few I think.

Should be instructions in the secondary instructions pdf they sent.

It involves basically emailing to admissions...UMs application system isn't particularly high tech lol

Edit sorry for the weird quote after comment the app is being screwy

For the secondary prompts, did you guys write up to 500 words?

For instance, "Why have you selected the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine for your medical education? Please be as specific as possible." I only have about 200 words for my response and I'm not sure if I should find things to expand on since I'm way below their word limit :/

I wrote as much as I had to say. Some were a struggle to get below 500 and others were closer to 200.

Hm did anyone else submit quite a while ago but their app is still not "scored" per the website?
Better than mine. I've been "scored" for awhile now and still haven't heard back. It makes me wonder how true they stay to their scoring system as I thought my app would have fared very well with it. Oh well.

Does Miami accept application updates? I am in a new job and couldn't find anything on their secondary or website?

For this question "Please briefly discuss your research experience.",

did you guys just talk about the aims/implications of your research? is it okay to talk about our accomplishments from being involvement in the research study? (i.e. abstracts, presentations, publications)?

Hi all!

Just wondering, is expanding on one of your most important clinical experiences mentioned in your PS/activities considered replicating your AMCAS PS? I'm assuming they just don't want us copying and pasting pieces from out PS when they ask us not to replicate our PS. TIA!

Just don't re-write the same thing. My PS talked about a particular experience in a fairly general way, so for this essay I told a very specific story from the same experience.

Thanks! I'm planning on using the same overall experience but addressing different things that I got out of it/learned.

If the prompt asks for a "description", should I just say what I did or should I also include what I learned from the activity? I'm worried I'm going to write too much and they'll be turned off by 10 essays of 300+ words lol.

Any info on interview style? II received

Open file, one of three adcom members who scored your app and liked what they saw. They're your advocate when they go back to committee so be thorough in your responses but not verbose. It's very conversational; they're not looking to trip you up or anything like that. Pretty straightforward.

I was verified 7/25 but still haven't gotten an email about the secondary...is this normal? Or does it mean I'm not getting a secondary? How long did it take for other people to receive a secondary after being verified?

It took them 4 days to send me a secondary, maybe check your spam folder?

I wouldn't listen to anyone being like "this is when I got completed..and this is when I got verified". It's variable; its not linear. What will happen, will happen. Just relax, and I know its easier said than done.

People can sit in the scored pile for a while. Remember that they've only sent out a small fraction of the IIs for the entire season so far. I was scored for like 2 months before my II, and there are people who waited farrrrr longer and got accepted.

They just take the top X number of apps and send IIs every week, so it could be a little while before they work their way down even if you scored very well.

Yes, they do. You can call admissions to confirm, but I think you just email it to the main admissions email address. I sent several last year both pre interview, post interview, and post waitlist. They seem to appreciate it if your update is significant.

What about not being scored? It's been a long while.

I'm honestly not sure how they move through the pile of applications.

On orientation they said something about having a computer algorithm that sorts them before they're sent to readers but weren't clear on what metrics they used.

Safe to say it's not a linear progression.

Also just because your portal "says" you weren't scored doesn't mean you actually have yet to be scored. They may have just not updated your portal message, since I believe that's done manually. Like I said before UM does not use a particularly high tech app system.

I would check spam folders, especially if you're using a .edu email. That's where mine ended up, but there was about a one week turnaround time.

The only "portal" I've looked at/found is the page right after you submit everything. It has green checks next to both of my apps but it doesn't say anything about being scored (granted I was only complete 8/2). Will the scored message pop up on there?

Or am I lost in the sauce and there's another portal?

No that's the portal. Below the checks, most of our portals say something like "Your app is complete" or "Your application is complete and is under review by our committee."

Has anyone had any luck emailing Miller about help with secondary questions? How long does it usually take for them to get back to you?

Any tips on whether to stay with a student host or at a hotel nearby the night before the interview?

Hotel = comfort, privacy, standard experience

Student host = more exposure to the program and what it's like to be a med student. I used to
Run the student host program and enjoyed those interactions tremendously 🙂

I'd say stay with student host. You get a much better feel for the program and it gives you stuff to talk about on the interview too ("oh I stayed with so-and-so, he's a 2nd year in the MD/MPH program...he was telling me all about the health fair they were just at, it sounds like a great time!...")

Also hotels around UM aren't particularly know for their high quality lol

Thank you guys for the feedback! I will definitely check out the host program to learn more about the school and to save money. Seems like a win win!
