2016-2017 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats to those accepted already!
Does anyone who interviewed on 9/26 have the status "Your applications and interview report will be reviewed a final time...."?

Out of curiosity, has anyone with the status "a final decision has been made etc." been rejected?
My status used to say "a final decision has been made" but then got changed late last week to "Your applications and interview report will be reviewed a final time"... does yours still say "a final decision"? I didn't get a call today and interviewed on Sept 23.

Yeah my status still says a final decision has been made. I interviewed Sept. 12th.

Did you apply for MD/MPH?

Let me ask those that were notified of their acceptance today (Congrats, btw), what does it say on your Application Status? --- A final decision has been made or Your application and interview report will be reviewed a final time?
I haven't received a call yet (I'm keeping my hopes up) but wanted to see if there was a change in the status when acceptances are notified.

Hey everyone! I'm a current first year student here, and I was actually curious enough to check my application status message from last cycle lol. It still says "A final decision has been reached by the Admissions Committee..."

This is a rough time, but try not to get anxious over specific status messages. It's better to wait for that call and/or email. I know most of you will still worry anyway lol and that's okay. But I just wanted to put that out there.

If your portal is saying a final decision has been made, it should also say contact the admissions office in a week if you haven't received a call or an email.

To my knowledge, the only decisions are accepted or alternate-listed.

Received the alternate list email this evening. I already expected it since I wasn't called yesterday, but it still stung a little. Trying to keep positive for a future acceptance though!

Would any current students be able to speak on the waitlist movement and the chances of acceptance further down the cycle? I haven't received an II, but if by some miracle I do and I interview in February or March, am I just interviewing for a waitlist spot? Still very early in the cycle, but I want to get some idea on Miami's acceptances. Do you know of any classmates that interviewed later in the cycle or was pulled off alternate list? Thanks!!

Has anyone with the "final decision status" not heard anything yet?

I believe it depends on your position in the waiting list and with next round of interviewees. So if your score is higher than some others in the next round/AdCom meeting, your chances of being accepted increases and you very well could be accepted in the next round/pulled off the waiting list. It may take a few weeks to a few months. I know one person who interviewed in November last cycle and wasn't accepted until May. You can go read some messages on last cycle's SDN thread. You might have a better idea.

And you should definitely read my previous messages on this thread. I interviewed mid-March and got accepted in April. So no, if they send you an II, it's indicative that they are highly considering you for an open spot.

Wish you the best!

Granted it was for the md/mph program, but at least half of my class interviewed in the spring.

I don't know if this was asked before, but do they accept updates?

With final decision status and no notice of alternate list, I'm wondering if a rejection might be on the way...freaking out.

The same as what someone else said, and this is confirmed for MD.

You get a score post-interview that I believe is considered somewhat separately from your pre-interview score (or people who interviewed later in the cycle wouldn't be accepted as often as they are), and this is used to accept applicants. Each round of acceptances, the applicants with the highest 20 scores are accepted and the rest are put on the wait list. I interviewed in February, was wait-listed in March and accepted May 1st. I know of people who interviewed early, were wait-listed and then accepted by the holidays. There's definitely a solid amount of wait-list movement all year.

GUYS!! been on a wait since mid july, not scored yet. Does any current applicant or previous applicant know if this is suicide to my app? Or do they take their sweet time and give out a lot of interviews later in the cycle? My stats are sitting right on their averages (kinda) GPA is a little higher, MCAT only a tiny bit lower. SO SO anxious. but congrats to all accepted folk! Hope to be your classmate!

Where do you go to see your app scored?

According to last year's thread, a high number of individuals with this status (like 16/20 from what I could determine) got an interview. There is a different status ("at this time a final decision has not been made on your app") from last year that was considered a hold. Obviously, this is almost pure speculation as there could have been 100's of others not on SDN that had the "good" status from last year that did not get an interview. Anyway, I hope for the best!🙂

I had that "final decision has not been made one" I've had the "Interviews are sent Sept-April" and the one I currently have is "your application has been reviewed, applicants are invited by email based on their evaluation score between august and march"

there are so many different statuses -_-

hi! will be interviewing here this week!!
Can anyone please tell me about their interview experience?
Is the interview more traditional or behavioral/ ethical Qs?

Thank you!

Miami has a ton of WL movement. Even for late interviewees. I can't remember the exact percentage but It was something like over half our class came off the WL. So for those who got the the list don't worry...many many UM students spend time on the waitlist.

I was an early WL (interviewed October) and sat on the list til late march. Other people I know interviewed in March and got accepted immediately.

(Last year) The interview was a single hour long slot with a faculty member, who can be either a clinician or a researcher. First half was the typical "why Medicine, why UM, why Miami, talk about your extracurriculars, etc". Second half was some pretty tame ethical scenarios. Basically they're just trying to see if you're not a sociopath - you don't need any real background in ethics, just don't be a terrible person and you'll be fine (e.g. Don't say you'd force treatment on a patient who doesn't consent or something equally obvious).

Then there's lunch and a tour lead by us M1s! I'm leading a couple tours this year, possibly some of the ones next week 😉.

*Note whoever interviews you is one of the people who read and scored your app, so they'll know your file well and will be a major advocate for you to the rest of the adcom.

It usually takes quite a while. I got mine like a month after the call lol.

Did you respond and accept through the e-mail? I sent a brief response back, but do they send confirmation or is there more in the mailed letter?

I can't remember. I think email. I'd call the admissions office and ask them, they're good at that kind of stuff

How long after you preference the interview dates did you guys receive a confirmation?

Anyone with GPA 3.75 MCAT 509 good EC's and a ton of research receiving II?

Is anyone who interviewed Sept 26/27 still waiting for a final review of their application?
