Wow, that was a fast turnaround. They really have loved your application. Congrats! Complete 9/6 here and nothing. I guess they must have looked at my app and not liked what they saw. Still hoping for some love here tho.

Thank you!

I hope you hear back soon! There ~10 dates for me so they have more love to give!

Hardly anyone does any meaningful research during first year. You spend a few months meeting with potential mentors and nailing down a project, then about 85% do research the first summer. After that, you squeeze in research time whenever you can. It's hard with basic science work, but clinical research can often be done electronically from anywhere. The requirements are lenient and the school understands if your quarterly report is thin because you were on medicine and surgery back to back in third year. As a general rule, research in medical school should be small and targeted in scope, unless you want to take time off.

I like the vast resources for mentorship, research, shadowing we have through UPMC. The curriculum has some rough spots, but overall works really well, imo. The classes in recent years that I've observed have all been very close-knit.

On another note, if anyone has the MSAR and doesn't mind doing a small favor for me, please PM me!

Would you say that this school has any emphasis on community-service? What opportunities do students have to do work in the surrounding community? (programs, initiatives, etc.) Thanks!

I got rejected today .. My watch is over,. Completed mid September

I got rejected this morning too. Completed early September. LizzzyM:78.6, OOS

We have a number of free clinics that students volunteer at, as well as programs with palliative care, high school students, pediatric oncology, rural medicine, community ophthalmology, and probably a few others. There is actually mandatory participation in one of these programs as part of the curriculum.

I'm planning on it, waiting until my interview day to get a better idea of what the program is about.

When are you interviewing? I'm wondering if to wait until then as well but my interview is in December and couldn't figure out if the PSTP is rolling from the website.

End of October. I think I remember hearing the deadline is in December but not entirely sure.

The application deadline is in February, but like I said, I don't know if it's rolling. And in December reg MD interviews are finished so most likely everyone who wanted to apply would have by then.

Does anyone know how competitive PSTP is? I would be down to apply but it seems like throwing away money since I have no publications.

Competitive as in the student profile? It says average is 3.7, 36. Haven't found anything about average research experience, or publications and I doubt it's unusually high because there is also MSTP taking from the clinician-scientist hopefuls pool.

Only ~46 people apply, so it seems rather self selective. And they interview 20, for 8 seats.

I think those aren't bad odds. Do you have quality research experience although no pubs?

I'm in the same boat. Lots of research experience but no pubs. However my most meaningful research experience is clinical so I'm wondering if I might be better suited for CSTP

I would definitely apply. They seem to need more people interested in PSTP then years past, our year only has two. We were highly encouraged to let everyone know with any interest, not necessarily substantial preexisting backgrounds.

I don't think you need publications. I think you just need meaningful research experience and letters from PI's who can speak about your research ability. That was the perception that I got during the PSTP information session during interview day. I am also planning to apply because they recently added a research area that is of interest to me.

I am also interested in the CSTP, but would rather have the ability to do lab rotations in the summer prior to starting med school. Seems like PSTP curriculum is in line with the MSTP curriculum so transferring in is sort of easier if you were to have an interest in pursuing more in depth research.

So PSTP students are required to do lab rotations in the summer prior to matriculation?

Yep

I think this program sounds AMAZING except for this point. I haven't had a free summer since 2013 and I was really looking forward to doing nothing for once before the whole med school-residency-career thing. Ya know, take some time to travel and relax. Do you think there is any flexibility here? Is it the whole summer or just a few weeks? I read somewhere that you can also apply to this internally as an M1, obviously these applicants wouldn't have done the summer before matriculation.

There is dedicated research time in the curriculum afaik. If you want some time off in summers, you'll be fine going the normal track!

Interviewed 10/18 and LOVED IT. I'm from the area and love Pittsburgh. The interview day was relaxing and the conversations in the interviews were pleasant and laid back. I was completed on 8/16 and offered the interview 8/22. Now the only problem is the wait for 1/31 :/ Would be happy to answer questions if anyone has them!!

That's awesome!! What did you love about it? What was the layout of the day like? Also was the interview just one person? Conversational or question after question?

overall such a welcoming feel, amazing research opportunities mixed with a balanced curriculum and unique, early, pt exposure. Layout of the day was just as stated in the interview schedule:welcoming with dean, tours, presentation by admissions committee, lunch with students, student interview, team exercise(evaluated), faculty interview, sample PBL activity (not evaluated), financial aid meeting and closing remarks.

I think it's important that you have good conversation in the interviews while still being able to demonstrate who you are as a person. Student interview very conversational (yet still need to tell the interviewer about yourself). Faculty interview started out as question after question (mostly regarding topics from my experience in healthcare) but by the end was very conversational.

Can you comment on the team exercise portion?

I just got my interview invite today; I submitted my secondary on 9/23. I have scheduled my interview for early December. What was the interview format like? Do you remember any questions?

great that you got the interview!!! spots must be filling up soon because i think the last interviews are mid december. interview format with student was very conversational, you have to tell them all about yourself because they only know your name, home and undergraduate institution.

mostly likely you will not have the same faculty interviewer as I did, but my faculty interview put me in some scenarios and asks how I would solve the problem. Plus basic questions like why medicine, why pitt, the usual. But, this interview also turned into a conversation too. I think that they are really just trying to learn about you. No tricks so to speak.

Dude thank you so much for you answer. I'm a rookie applicant and this will be my first interview. What was the scenario question you were asked?

Anyone interviewing this week and wanna meet up to explore the city?
My interviews on Weds, but I'm staying a bit longer to check out the city

Lol. I was going to walk around and find somewhere but the rain is killing that plan.

So if I applied late (like mid-October) do I basically have no shot? I had no idea their interview season was so short!! For reference, I'm OOS, GPA: 3.98, MCAT: 513.

On one hand that makes sense due to the massive number of people that apply early. But on the other hand, I don't know how they could take your money and say the deadline isn't until mid-November if they aren't even going to give you a fair shot. I'd love to hear some thoughts on this from people with adcom connections...

I applied early and this was my first rejection (like a month and a half after submitting). So they clearly work through the apps pretty quickly. I think you've got a shot due to this (over some schools where I was only complete months after submitting), plus your stats are solid. Good luck!
Sorry to hear about your rejection! But thanks for the glimmer of hope... I'm just keeping my fingers crossed at this point with so few spots left! Thank you!!

I assume that they would give any qualified applicant that they were interested in an interview, regardless of the time you submitted. I think they save some spots for interviews from qualified later applicants. Would be very unfair if otherwise. I think the reason they hold some people that applied early in the season is to offer them an interview if they don't have candidates later in the process that they see fit for an interview.

I'm in the same boat as you (slightly lower GPA, slightly higher MCAT), but considering they have rejected others who applied somewhat close to this time frame I think we still have hope..

anyone have any idea of the accepted vs matriculated stats for UPSOM?
