2016-2017 University of Rochester Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got an interview invite just now, complete early July, OOS LizzieM~70, but I have already been accepted to my top choice. Will be withdrawing, hopefully my spot goes to someone who is still waiting!

II about an hour ago! There are no open dates on the calendar, but I will try to get in touch with admissions.

Complete: 8/1; LizzyM 72-73

Interview invite today!! Was complete 8/5! Really starting to believe in the whole no news is good news thing 🙂

Hey all, do you know if Rochester has an accepted students day to revisit the campus, etc.?

Yep! Early April. They sent dates in acceptance info (I am not sure what they are off the top of my head).

I recently mailed in my signed admission form from Rochester. Do they notify you through email or through the portal that they received your response to the offer of admission?

Yes! You get an email and it also shows up under the communications tab on the portal around the same time

Anyone have any tips on the interview? Also what are the essays used for and when are they read?

If I remember correctly, there are two interviews, one closed and one open, so the open app will have read your whole application, and may ask you specifics about it. My advice is to read over your whole app and be able to give good responses to 1) what's your elevator introduction (who you are in 30 seconds) 2) why MD and 3) why Rochester. Read up about the bio-psycho-social model, but also read more into UR than just that. Have a couple of specific questions about UR that you can ask the interviewer. Then go back over you primary and secondary app and remind yourself why you got an interview, why you're a badass, and why you'll get into UR.

Best of luck!

I agree with almost everything he/she said, except I was under the impression that both interviewers only have access to your essays (ie both "closed" file). I could be wrong though.

This was one of my most enjoyable interview days. Both my interviewers were really cool, and we mostly talked about my hobbies and non-academic/non-clinical ECs. Obviously this could vary interviewer to interviewer, but I think the school encourages this conversational interview style, especially by having closed file (other than the pre-interview essays) interviews.

OP- good luck on your interview!

Just rejected pre-II. Complete back in July. Was hoping for some late-cycle love since the first week of January netted both a swath of rejections and IIs in last year's thread. Second rejection of the day 🙁

Rejected today, complete mid July or so. Before the season began I had very high hopes for this one. Oh well - best of luck all.

Also rejected pre-II today. Complete early July. Bummer.

Congrats on those who got accepted. I am a healthcare recruiter in Syracuse for the Army and U of R is my favorite school I visit by far! The pre health department is amazing and the cooperation between the medical school/nursing school/gme/dental/U of R and eastman dental is something you don't see much these days.

Rejected today. Complete in July. IS. Good luck to everyone else!

Rejected. But thankful as I have 1 acceptance and that's all you need 🙂 Good luck to everyone!

Got rejected from here today but didn't really phased me. Not a fan of mandatory classes

For the Rochester pre-interview questionnaire, once I press submit, the textboxes are still open to be typed in and changed. Is this normal? Also, does anyone know if once I press submit, the changes I make afterwards to the textbox (and after pressing submit for a second time), do the interviewers see what I submitted the first time or the second time?

Best,
A Curious Student

After lots of deliberation, I finally sent in an email to withdraw my application.

This is an awesome school, and best of luck to everyone still waiting!
Still lots of interview dates, and likely, invites to come! The offered interview dates were: 1/20, 1/23, 1/26, 1/30, 2/9, 2/17, 2/20, 2/23, 2/24, and 2/27.

I got an II back in December and the earliest date was first week of Feb. Interesting that there are so many earlier slots open now. I'd actually love to have an earlier date.

For the dietary restrictions box, that's how it worked for me. I'm not sure if that's how it works for the EC's/essays... Anyone else have any input?
Btw how long were your essays?
I aimed for half a page per answer, single spaced, so ~250 words.

For people who have interviewed, did you stay with a student (student housing) or at a hotel?

For hotel, is there one that is recommended, that's in close proximity or within walking distance to where the interviews are? Thanks in advance.
